Art Foto Mode-International Photography Workshops

ArtFotoMode organises international photography workshops and a One Year Program Art Foto Mode has been set up by:

Michael Grieve, Creative Director.

Art Foto Mode is an initiative to organise photography projects with some of the most influential contemporary lens based auteurs as inspirational teachers and mentors. Art Foto Mode endeavours to grow experientially and bring together a community of photographic artists from around the world to develop their personal visual expression and to engage in workshops, master classes, exhibitions, book

production and lectures in an informal, open and yet intensive atmosphere. A British photographer, writer and lecturer, with experience in the field of photography. Having graduated with a BA Hons in Film, Video and Photographic Arts and an MA in Photographic Studies both at the University of Westminster in London he went on to be an editorial photographer for publications such as Liberation, Le Monde, Sunday Times Magazine, Weekend Guardian Magazine, Vice, Newsweek and is represented by Agence VU in Paris. He was the deputy editor and writer for the contemporary photography magazine, 1000 Words and organised workshops in Morocco with such notable photographers as Antoine d’Agata, Anders Petersen and Roger Ballen. He was a senior lecturer at Nottingham Trent University and a lecturer at Akademia Fotografii in Warsaw and Berliner Technische Kunstschule in Berlin. He now teaches at Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie and writes on a regular basis for the British Journal of Photography.

Photography as Reconstruction is an intimate workshop designed to help photographers and visual artists reconnect with their creative practice, develop a clearer artistic vision, and build the confidence to pursue work that feels deeply personal and authentic.
Over the course of the weekend, participants will take part in an in-depth portfolio review, constructive group critiques, individual mentorship sessions, and conversations around concept development, sequencing, editing, and building long-term photographic projects. We’ll explore not only how images are made, but why we make them, examining photography as a tool for memory, identity, reconstruction, and personal inquiry.

Developing Your Personal Project:

The goal of this workshop is to help photographers develop and realize full-scale personal projects. Along with sharing his own work, Alec Soth will lead group critiques and meet with participants individually. Topics discussed will be narrative, sequencing, text, and distribution through publishing, exhibitions, and performance. Special emphasis will be given to creative roadblocks. Participants will be given assignments and exercises that help them expand the boundaries of their practice.

Great footage of Harry Gruyaert at work during a recent workshop in Naples.

This footage shows how physical a photographer needs to be and how to control a situation to get the right results. It’s wonderful to see how this scene caught Harry’s eye from the street and how a passion for the picture draws him into the situation and then he takes possession of the scene, moving people to maximise the potential of a well composed picture. It proves also that for a man of 84 years old he is still incredibly active. A true inspiration!
