FINAL DAY TO BID ON WORKS!
Bidding ends at 20h CET
💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫

We had planned this auction for April 2020 to raise money for Fridays for Future. Sadly we had to cancel that auction due to the Coronavirus lockdown. Under the current circumstances we find ourselves also in need of support, so we have decided to proceed with the auction, now forwarding 25% of proceeds to Fridays for Future immediately on receipt of money. The rest will be kept in a fund to support Das Gift and Das Giftraum through Coronavirus. This will help us to continue providing local artists with Das Giftraum as a free space to use, and to support local musicians and all of our lovely regulars with Das Gift. When we feel that we are safely through, all unused funds will be donated to FfF. Greta Thunberg is an amazing person. We’ve known about the climate emergency for decades and yet have done very little about it. Moving to a sustainable, green and fair society is really essential so let’s support the kids who are taking on that battle with intelligence and bravery.

We would like to extend a special thanks to all of the artists involved for donating their artwork. Thanks also to photographer @len_dro for documenting the works.

Study of a Male, 2010
Alana Richards
Oil on canvas
60cm x 50cm

Current Minimum Bid:
200 EUR

Drawing from an eclectic range of influences and rich experiences, Richards' work is focused on portraiture, and an interest that lies in capturing the soul of her subject as well as revealing subtle insights into herself at that junction of time.

Her initial photo sessions for each new work are a vital part of the process, as a close interaction with the subject sparks initial ideas, which are drawn and then painted with oil. She is inspired by a wide range of styles and artists, from German Expressionism to the classical paintings of the Old masters. Her paintings are classically composed, but the result has a freshness that is decidedly contemporary; layers are often built up and torn apart, only to be rebuilt again, often giving the subject a complex and hidden history within the frame.

Richards has exhibited her work widely throughout Europe, including Lazarides Gallery in the UK, and her work is in private collections worldwide. Public collections include the Museum Lendava in Slovenia.

Myriam Perrot
Painted ceramics

Current Minimum Bid:
100 EUR

Myriam Perrot is a French-Swiss artist based in Berlin since 2015. Her work is informed by a multidisciplinary engagement that finds its roots in an original training in set design and anthropology. Driven by an obsession for aesthetic refinement, her installations (ceramics) and illustrations inquire into the nature of spaces and materialities. Inspired by the places she inhabits and remembers, her work explores a threshold found between rationalised space and imaginary worlds.

These small ceramic heads have been a guiding thread in Myriam Perrot’s work for the last two years, with "Two pointy heads" resulting from the development of a larger series crafted during the ongoing lockdown. As much as conveying a subconscious play around symbolic associations, the miniature heads act as repeated attempts to compensate for experienced feelings of isolation.

Isaac Moss, an artist based in Berlin and a 2018 graduate of Fine Art (Painting) at the Edinburgh College of Art. Isaac’s practice explores the relationship between image and language, predominantly using the mediums of painting and printmaking.

Artists’ Statement:
The foundation of my practice is grounded in exploring the relationship between image and language.
By taking both away from their assigned roles and combining them, my work suggests that text and image are arbitrary. Adopting and mimicking techniques/effects from printmaking and graphics, my work aims to sit between mediums, allowing me to explore the tensions between language and image from both a conceptual and material standpoint.
Because painting is as integral to visual culture as printing is to text, I utilise the tension between the two, to reinstate the ambiguous nature of both. Between familiarity and illegibility, my work is about ambiguity.
Language is considered and explored as a visual material, by decoding words and imagining new signs/symbols. In contrast, imagery is formatted and distorted through processes of misuse and combination until it is no longer decipherable.
The broader context of my work is about what happens when you present the two primary forms of communication in the same platform. In a time of mass information and connection, I believe misinterpretation and division arise out of a failure to see our words and our images as limited. I find it compelling to make apparent those limitations by showing each as examples of the other. What kind of world exists behind our words and visions of it?

Mid-Wave
Alice Morey
Monoprint
36 x 24 cm unframed
(sold unframed)

Current Minimum Bid:
200 EUR

These monoprints are part of a series of one-off prints made by painting on flat sheets of plexiglass which were then put through a traditional printing press. Alice made use of this technique during the last lockdown, inspired by the nature and odd objects she was inhabiting.

Born in 1986, Alice Morey is a Berlin and London-based interdisciplinary artist, with an MA from Chelsea College of Art, London and a BA in painting from the University of Brighton. She is represented by Lehmann + Silva in Porto. She is the founder and curator of an alternative collaborative art residency, Countdown Grabowsee (Globe Gallery), organised every summer in an abandoned sanatorium north of Berlin. Morey often works collaboratively and is part of four active collectives: Portland (UK), TEETH (UK/DE), Puppetmaster with artist/activist Zwek (DE) & Data Blood with artist Emily Mulenga (UK/DE)

“Morey is interested in the passage of time. She finds beauty in decay and contrasts it with pain. She has been juxtaposing natural and artificial materials for years in order to explore the concept of change. Her performative work could be compared to rituals, as she undertakes actions charged with symbolism in a ceremonial tone. She acts either as an alchemist or a contemporary witch who manipulates natural processes. The artist explores the creativity behind rituals and their role in the historical and cultural processes which underlie our society.”
(Extract from a recent interview written for HIT² by curator and Sotheby’s alumni Luz Hitters.
