Berlin Masters 2018 participant 's solo exhibition at , entitled KRAFT LIEBE HOFFNUNG, was a welcome early highlight of 2021.

KRAFT LIEBE HOFFNUNG (Power Love Hope) is a interplay of what Marta Vovk calls "trivial culture," presented in a contemporary art context. Vovk's work combines painting and installation, where the artist utilizes new dimensional shapes in wood in lieu of traditional canvas to create images in which pop cultural elements go hand in hand with existential questions of the modern self. The result is an associative interplay between banality and pathos.

Artist Highlight: Johanna Dumet

The French artist 's latest exhibition at sees the artist stepping away from the large-scale, opulently filled scenes of tables that she built her name from. She is now turning to the opposite: the artist focuses on colors, which she places adjacently in such a manner that surfaces emerge from them, the horse or riding camel as historically significant subjects occurring as negative space. - From the show text by Laura Helena Wurth

Artist Highlight: Isabella Fürnkäs

's practice can be described as open, gender-fluid, sensitive yet powerful, and nationless. Her work deals with questions of bodily intimacy, digital relationality and the fragility of societal communication structures. By manipulating the view, Fürnkäs creates contextual shifts that echo our own vulnerabilities.

"L’Esprit Nouveau" at the Kunstraum Potsdam

"Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg's art embodies a certain what-if thinking that takes the question as an attitude. What if a painting were a sculpture? And vice versa? Or what if vaguely modernist and digital forms met in a mix of styles that knocked both off their pedestals? Tactically, Dunkelberg's material process seems guided by what-if questions, particularly in the idiosyncratic sequence of steps she devised to produce her wall reliefs." - Camila McHugh

Artist Highlight: Jakub Kubica ()

Kubica explores the deconstruction and rearrangement of the present moment's shifting polarities. The artist's synthesis of of objects of natural origin with technical or digital matter is one of the most distinguishing features within his sculptural work. He is also known as a musician and graphic artist, operating with modular synths with the same level of observation, playfulness, sketching, isolation, production, and presentation.

Our 2020 winner 's latest offering is part of a series at featuring work by her as well as works by and .

Writer Emily McDermott describes the show as "Emrich pointing toward micro-pauses experienced in everyday liquid life -- micro-pauses that are forced while the water keeps flowing, making manifest the seconds between here and there, between now and then." Emrich's combination of engraved text into familiar glass structures such as car windows render the objects on the walls "transformed into chameleonic, open-ended forms, ready to adapt to our own projections."

This month's exhibition at , entitled "Wie bereits eingangs erwähnt ..” featured this early, large scale sculptural work by 2017 Berlin Masters participant . This early work sees the artist first explorations away from canvas into sculpture before reaching their now painterly motifs of surrealism and modern absurdities.

Artist Highlight: Julius von Bismarck ()

A graduate of the UdK (University of Arts) Berlin and the Institute for Spatial Experiments funded by Olafur Eliasson, Julius von Bismarck was one of the very first to participate in the inaugural Berlin Masters exhibition in 2013.

Julius von Bismarck is a multi-media artist using everything from photography and video to installation and performance. Associating visual arts to other fields of research and experimentation, such as physical and social sciences, his artistic practice can take on various forms – from installations to happenings, from sculpture to Land Art. It is defined by an in-depth and complex exploration of the phenomena of perception, or the representation and reconstruction of reality. Artist Highlight: Jonas Brinker

Previously shown at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, .brinker's film follows a domesticated wolf who lives in a private household in Lower Saxony.

"Along with other wolves, he is trained to work in films—to react to simple commands, to stand still, and to pose. Jonas Brinker observes the behavior of domesticated creatures in this artificial setting and chronicles how the natural and the staged are mutually dependent.... Jonas Brinker’s video work builds on these connotations and shows the moment in which the animal becomes an image. In front of a green screen, the wolf does its circuits and repeatedly stands on an artificial stone to look into the distance. The animal was trained to behave in conditioned motion sequences according to human commands. But the animal’s gaze and posture allow the controversial tension one can sense within the creature to show through." - Franziska Nori, Dennis Brzek

Curator mentioned during our Awards Ceremony that this rendition did not truly have a curated theme, but that each work was both conceptually profound and visually arresting, and highlights a clarity of vision from newcomers to the contemporary art scene of Berlin. Nevertheless, astutely observed that nature and the natural world was a well represented motif, from the award winning sound sculpture work by to the various animal related imagery present.

About our venue this year: Wilhelm Hallen

The old Winkelhof iron foundry is now known as Wilhelm Hallen (), an ensemble of various halls, loft spaces and offices in a beautiful clinker brick architecture. Spanning more than 20,000 square meters, the aim of the renovation is uncompromising preservation of the original structure.

Designed between 1898 and 1918 by the busy Pankow master bricklayer Christian Friedrich Malingriaux and built from 1902 by the architect Hermann Streubel, the factory halls actually underwent only a few changes - in the 1950s, a number of installations and the addition of a porter's house were made. Since it was closed in 2014, the existing structure has remained untouched, so that daylight still falls through the sooty glass panes of the foundry as Malingriaux saw it a hundred years ago.

Artist Highlight: Isabella Fürnkäs ()

The body of work by Isabella Fürnkäs involves equal shares of video, multi-media installation, performance and drawing. In her work she deals with questions of bodily intimacy, digital relationality and the fragility of societal communication structures. By manipulating the viewer, Fürnkäs creates contextual shifts that echo our own vulnerabilities. In the context of her works, inner images and multi-layered questions are transformed into a repertoire of media-reflexive actions.
