CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM FORMER FEDERAL PRESIDENT AND PATRON OF THE OPERA VILLAGE AFRICA HORST KÖHLER

Dear supporters of the Opera Village Africa,

The outgoing year is characterized by a shocking simultaneity of crises. The war in Ukraine, rising prices and the energy crisis dominate the concerns of people in this country. Meanwhile, the misery, poverty and hunger that prevail in large parts of Africa receive little attention from us.

Burkina Faso is one of many African countries currently experiencing great despair: fear of terrorist attacks is growing, food is becoming scarce in many places, and hunger is looming. Faced with a lack of prospects, many are deciding to leave their homeland.

But there is also reason for hope: especially among the younger generation, a new, unexpected self-confidence can be observed. Young people are facing up to the many challenges and are ready to take responsibility for the future of their country. They want to stay in Burkina Faso and do not resign in the face of the enormous problems in the country.

This is the attitude that Opera Village Africa seeks to promote. Hope is visible in the village’s projects: vital initial examinations and health education take place in the infirmary, the cultural program facilitates an open exchange across national borders, and in the school, the children are given the opportunity to learn more about their own country.

The cultural program facilitates open exchange across national borders, and the number of children enrolled in school has increased significantly. For the first time, more girls than boys are attending first grade this year.
None of this would have been possible without your financial support. I would like to thank you for this. At the same time, I ask you: Let us continue to support the Opera Village Africa, let us work together for a better future for the people of Burkina Faso!

I wish you and your families happy holidays and a peaceful new year!

Yours,

Horst Köhler

Former Federal President and Patron of Opera Village Africa

°ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE 2022°

Malick Welli is a Senegalese artist and photographer who lives and works in Dakar, Senegal. His work tackles themes of duality, spirituality, history and restitution of memory, pedagogy and displaced identity. Welli is interested in the convergence of religion with material influences; economics and power dynamics and how these shape visual culture. There is a questing for ecology and interdependence and how apparently independent events coincide and influence each other. Welli brings these material community concerns into sharp contrast with individual spiritual needs.

°ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE 2022°

Charlotte Brathwaite’s genre-defying work illuminates the realities and dreams of marginalized people; people whose stories have been silenced, disappeared, and ignored. Dealing with subject matter from the historical past to the distant future, her work brings to light issues of social justice, race, power, and the complexities of the human condition. A director of classical texts, multimedia, site-specific works, dance performances, operas, concerts, film, and installations – Brathwaite’s trans-disciplinary inquiry manifests in spectacles of color and music. Her works live in the deep time of aural/oral history and create an immersive experience for audience and performer alike which offers new perspectives in both form and content.

Conviction: The Case of Stephen Lawrence, GB (UK) 2021, D: Alrick Riley with Sharlene Whyte, Hugh Quarshie, Richie Campbell, 131 min, Engl. OV admission free

The drama portrays the events of 2006, thirteen years after Stephen's death on the evening of April 22, 1993 at the hands of a racially motivated man while he was waiting for the bus on Well Hall Road in Eltham. Despite knowing the identity of their son's murderers, Doreen and Neville Lawrence failed to convict those responsible, and their extraordinary campaign for justice led to a public inquiry that branded the Metropolitan Police as racist and made sweeping changes to law and police practice.

The film tells the story of Doreen and Neville Lawrence's ongoing struggle for justice and how Detective DCI Clive Driscoll, who works closely with the Lawrences, conducts an investigation that ultimately, more than 18 years after Stephen's death, led to the conviction of two members of the Leading gang who committed the murder of Stephen.

The anti-Bayreuth: Opera Village by architect ́ré and stage director is the epic story of an opera house turned engine for urban planning. Built in the most remote place imaginable—the arid desert of the west African nation of Burkina Faso—Opera Village, a decade on, now encompasses housing facilities, a medical center, an artist residency, and a school for up to five hundred pupils. The radical simplicity of Operndorf Afrika
is a village based in Burkina Faso that’s governed by art and a global exchange of culture. Enjoying its 10th anniversary, the organisation runs an international artist residency program, where knowledge is transferred between young artists and the village inhabitants. The idea came from the late Christopher Schlingensief, who said: ‘I think it is long overdue that we describe the wealth of Africa!’
