I AM (VR), 2021 Markus Selg & Susanne Kennedy In collaboration with Rodrik Biersteker and Richard Janssen

Galerie Guido W. Baudach is delighted to present its eighth solo exhibition of new works by Markus Selg. Selg is one of the pioneers of digital art in Germany. Since the 1990s, the Berlin-based artist has been using the possibilities of the computer to create paintings, sculptures, videos and sounds; parts of a complete work that he likes to bring together in parcours-like, multimedia spatial installations. In recent years, he has increasingly transferred this approach to the theater stage in collaboration with theater director Susanne Kennedy. In the exhibition 'MIND IN THE CAVE', Selg now shows new painterly and sculptural works in the context of a walk-in installation that serves as a platform for his first virtual reality production 'I AM (VR)'. The purely virtual play, another cooperation with Susanne Kennedy, created in collaboration with Rodrik Biersteker and Richard Janssen, can be experienced exclusively through the individual use of virtual reality goggles and allows the visitor to go through a journey that is as interactive as it is immersive, ultimately leading to a surprising destination.

As Markus Selg notes, "VR is not only a powerful technology of simulation, ... but a profound reflective tool about human perception and ego consciousness. Who am I? Who is this avatar with whom we identify as I? Do we exist in the physical world or do we exist primarily within the stories our brains tell themselves. Who or what is hallucinating these stories? How do we access a reality outside of our limited sensory perceptions? If we live in our own simulation, how can we interact with others? How do we distinguish between reality and simulation? Is there even a difference?"

Due to current infection control regulations, the exhibition can only be visited by pre-booked appointment. Extended hours apply, Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can book your individual appointment by e-mail, by phone or independently via the corresponding registration tool on our website. Pre-registration is obligatory, as is the wearing of a medical mouth-nose covering.

Tamina Amadyar's quite early painting 'malibu', 2015, appears as an almost minimalist interpretation of the Pacific horizon northwest of Los Angeles, a seascape in which the sunny yellow prevailing on site meets the rich leafy green of the neighboring hinterland of the same name instead of the actual blue shades of the sky and the sea.

'malibu' by Tamina Amadyar is part of the first BACKSTAGE presentation 'Landscape as Vision' gathering a compilation of works that, despite partly differing genres, formulate a similarly surreal-abstract conception of the common subject.

The new format BACKSTAGE at the gallery will from now on regularly highlight special individual works and series by one or thematically selected works by various artists, independently of the regular exhibition program and both physically in the gallery's showroom and virtually online on the gallery’s website.

The first edition 'Landscape as Vision' will be on view from February 18 to March 20, 2021.

The new catalog of Thomas Zipp @distanzverlag will be released on December 15, 2020!

For his show at Kunsthalle Gießen (2018), Zipp created one of his distinctively gloomy room scenarios, which reinterpreted the exhibition 'The Family of Man: (1955). While the internationally-famed MoMA presentation coalesced artistic and everyday photography on the premise of global understanding, Zipp parts from this multinational approach by turning the spotlight on his birthplace Heppenheim, a small town in west-central Germany. The visitors were invited to walk through a housing settlement replicated on a scale of 1:1, resembling countrywide, everyday routines and conventions. In addition, the artist showed private photos from estates.

The exhibition catalog documents this extensive installation and performance; it presents a cross-section of Zipp's multifaceted oeuvre and includes works from the past 10 years. With texts by Nadia Ismail and Zdenek Felix among others.

Another year on Planet Earth - Andy Hope 1930 is known for crossing and contrasting his basis in Modernism with stylistic elements from pop culture, namely Comic and Science-Fiction. His practice spans a variety of media with painting and drawing at its centre. Things, forms, properties, techniques, references, genres, attitudes and stories coincide, but without ever giving the impression of being custom-fit, for gaps and inconsistent materials are intentionally allowed to remain. Elisions and proliferations occur, and, most notably, surprising hybrids which move between historic monuments, relics of the contemporary and spectres of futuristic fantasies.

'It is about an unrecognizability from which something new can re-emerge. Discovering something through concealment, making something visible by encryption. 'Faces and Names' is a group show juxtaposing portrait works of different media, including drawings, collages, photographs, paintings and one sculpture.
On display are portraits of friends and family members (Tamina Amadyar, Aïda Ruilova, Lucy McKenzie), portraits of celebrities from showbiz and politics (Erik van Lieshout, Roman März, Yves Scherer), self-portraits of artists (Jürgen Klauke, Bjarne Melgaard), portraits of fictional figures, surreal as well as digital imaginations (Thomas Helbig, Andy Hope 1930, Markus Selg), plus - last but not least – some rather conceptual variations of this traditional and still popular genre of the visual arts (Erwin Kneihsl, Jasmin Werner, Thomas Zipp), which has become even more topical again in times when we meet each other more often in the form of moving profile pictures on computer screens than we actually face each other in person.

The exhibition is on view until Saturday 11 July.

We are looking forward to participate in the first edition of Sunday Open on May 24th, a new initiative of Berlin galleries organized by Index Berlin, featuring Philipp Modersohn’s solo show “attitudes of heat”. Modersohn's artistic practice follows the aesthetical idea of Mimesis. But he imitates less the visual appearance of nature than its geological form processes. By this, Modersohn preferably uses earthbound materials such as metal and stone, as well as recycling products such as plastics and granules, exemplified in “young stone with future”, a free-standing sculpture inspired by so-called “fulgurites”, root-like glass tubes, which occur in nature when lightning strikes the desert sand. This work and others more are on view until May 30th, 2020. Please stop by at the gallery or – if not in Berlin - visit us online at https://www.guidowbaudach.com

Der Tagesspiegel, Kunst & Markt, 14. Dezember 2019
