Scotty - artist run project space Berlin scotty-berlin.de Oranienstr. 46 10969 Berlin Öffnungszeiten: Mi-Fr 15-19h Sa 14-18h SCOTTY was founded in 2006. Today, the artist-run project space is located in Kreuzberg, Oranienstrasse and organized by 15 artists.
(3)

In the house with the smallest floor space in Kreuzberg SCOTTY provides an open platform for its member artists and curators as well as for guests, offering the greatest possible freedom while exploiting group potential to a maximum. Intermedia and interdisciplinary solo and group exhibitions are shown at regular intervals, and performances and film evenings are organized. The focus is on contemporary social and cultural-political issues. SCOTTY operates independent of the market – it is selfautonomy determined and non-hierarchical. Above and beyond the work in this space in Berlin-Kreuzberg , the members of SCOTTY initiate and organize supra-regional and international cooperation with other similar project spaces, strengthening the position of artists working autonomously through nationwide visibility and networking. Despite the members‘ pronounced individuality, they share a desire to create new opportunities for artistic actions and ideas. The vitality of SCOTTY arises from the consistent, self-determined implementation of democratic agreement among members during the planning and realization of projects.

Berlin Art Week Project Spaces highlights: Visibility is a Trap will be open during Gallery Weekend Sept 12th +13th, 14 – 18 h Scotty - artist run project space Berlin. Sonja Nilsson will show two pieces from a series of works that revolve around the sociological concept of Passing; a person’s ability to be perceived as a member of an identity group or category other than their origin. Characteristic of Nilsson's work is her illusionist media trickery making actors appear in like holograms in space. As viewers, we are often confronted and actively placed in relation to her works. In this show, the subjects and dialogs are based on exceptional cases, with famous people, all revolving around the topic of Passing. The characters in the pieces used to be included, sharing our space but after being outed, they are now excluded and stuck inside the walls. Peeking through holes punched into the walls, visitors can follow how they confront accusations of not being authentic and turn these sentences back toward us. In the other scene, a jam session happens with a song mixing quotes from Janice Raymond's ideas around the appropriation of female body to the rhythm of Frankie Valli's Can't Take My Eyes Off You.

Sonja Nilsson is a Swedish artist living in Berlin. Her work has mainly been shown in Sweden, this is her first solo exhibition in Berlin.
