With the opening of Monom Studios at the historic Funkhaus Berlin, Berlin gains an experimental performance venue and state of the art spatial sound studio. At the heart of Monom Studios is the 4DSOUND system, brought to life by a collective of engineers and over 100 artists during a decade-long period of research, experimentation and public performances. This one-of-a-kind instrument immerses up

to 400 people inside 48 omnidirectional speakers suspended throughout the venue, extending to 9 powerful subs submerged beneath an acoustically transparent floor. Monom Studios commissions artist residencies and public performances that will explore the possibilities of spatial sound as an expressive medium. Beyond unprecedented real-time control over sounds parameters, 4DSOUND pioneers the harmonious integration with any and all interfaces – movement, light, virtual augmented reality, bio-feedback, metric or brainwave - providing an opportunity for artists to collaborate and combine sensory dimensions - in effect to compose, and perform a live ecosystem. Monom Studios will use this powerful integration as a summons to bring together not only sonic artists and musicians across genres and styles but also artists and technologists across disciplines

SPATIAL SOUND AT REETHAUS, BERLIN

We are thrilled to be spatializing in 4DSOUND RITUAL, Jon Hopkins’ new album, which will be presented on July 16th and 17th as a listening session at Reethaus as part of their spatial sound program with light design by Shaly Lopez

With RITUAL, Hopkins makes the Reethaus into an altar, returning us to the ancient thud of feet on the ground, to memories of a possible future, to the flickering light on the cave wall. RITUAL is a soundscape structured as a ceremonial epic, tracing an arc over 41 minutes that takes us from a preverbal state, pregnant with possibility, into life, death, and life thereafter. Making use of powers of repetition and variation honed over his 22-year career, Hopkins induces hypnosis, creating a collective listening experience that offers more than pleasure: the opportunity to find something lost in a place you didn’t know existed. The canvas is open; it is up to the listeners to breathe, bathe in resonance, and make this dream machine their own.

The first date is already sold out, but today Reethaus announced an additional date on July 17th.

Tickets are available through their profile.

MONOM Berlin is home to the original 4DSOUND system, which is a forest of metal columns, each housing 3 vertically integrated omnidirectional speakers arranged on three different levels. Unlike standard unidirectional speakers, these project sound in all directions, producing audio holograms. The system’s subwoofers are integrated into the floor, intensifying the sensory experience.

We are thrilled to announce our second collaboration with artist Robertina Šebjanič .sebjanic, whose work CO_SONIC 38,144 km² has been selected for the immersive program.

Our team will spatialize CO_SONIC 38,144 km² in 4DSOUND, partially at MONOM in Berlin and in the 4DSOUND room at Mercer Labs .labs, where it will be presented.

Visitors will be able to experience the spatial version of this work from June 7th to June 17th.

—— ——
In CO_SONIC 38,144 km², a poetic reflection and AI-powered sound landscape, artist Robertina Šebjanič explores the story of the coexistence of species and life forms through an observation of a river as one entity. The 4DSOUND adaptation by MONOM for Tribeca Festival integrates the sounds of the Hudson River and bustling New York streets, blending them with the sonic presence of the more-than-human voices of natural and AI-generated entities from the Ljubljanica River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Very few tickets available for the premiere of Gear(s) & Glass

Join us on Saturday, May 25, as French multidisciplinary artist Jeanne Briand and Franco-Italian instrumentalist, composer, and producer Romain Azzaro celebrate the launch of their second album, Gear(s).

This spatial sound experience, created in collaboration with MONOM, not only complements the album but deepens the exploration into an intriguing question that has often sparked debate between the two artists: What might machine music sound like if crafted from glass?

Attendees will be enveloped by the glassy sounds, reimagined through instruments and processes that transform their distinctive sonic characteristics. Emphasizing its brittleness and fragility, the artists break the glass’s calm, turning the shards into a composition of poetic, psychedelic electronic music. The glass may shatter, but it is reborn as glistening granules of sound.

To accentuate the night the duo have also invited  , a Paris-based composer and sound artist, and Romila ( ) , who will present her sound installation “Merkayangan: A Study of the Javanese Realms”

For a comfortable and intimate experience, this session will have very limited capacity. Your ticket will grant you access to all three sessions and the celebration party. Additionally, we will offer non-alcoholic elixirs and cocktails designed by the Magnetic Moon collective

Images from the Open Haus at , featuring “Human Nature Machine,” an embodied listening experience by spatial sound artist William Russell

“Human Nature Machine” was originally composed for the large scale 4DSOUND system housed at MONOM, Berlin.

The event kicked off the “Spatial Futures” series, the continuation of a creative partnership between MONOM and Reethaus, a space for radical presence that opened on the Spree riverside last September. In addition to our curatorial partnership, MONOM co-programs the in-built 360-degree spatial sound system in the inner room of the Reethaus, spatializing sonic works with the instrument.

The Reethaus was designed by the Austrian architect Monika Gogl, who drew inspiration from ancient temples, caves and other natural voids to create a space for profound encounters and exploration through sound. It is the first new structure to open at Flussbad, a creative campus that will grow over the next year to encompass hotel rooms, working lofts, a restaurant, an auditorium for learning and exchange and an advanced holistic health program.

Visit Flussbad.com to learn more about the partnership and subscribe to their mailing list for program info, advanced ticket access and other campus-related announcements.

On Saturday, 25th of May, during the premiere of “Gear(s) & Glass” by French multidisciplinary artist Jeanne Briand and Franco-Italian instrumentalist, composer, and producer Romain Azzaro experience the captivating sound installation by Romila , “Merkayangan: A Study of the Javanese Realms.”

This spatial sound work, created in Lobe Vancouver’s 4DSOUND studio, is a simulation of the seven kejawen realms using traditional Javanese instruments, natural sounds, and archival recordings. This project merges modern and spiritual technologies (kejawen mysticism and instruments like gamelan and angklung) to recreate a pre-colonial memory of these thresholds, redefining their portrayal through auditory storytelling. It employs slendro and pelog, Javanese pentatonic scales, for “realm building,” simulating the realms and the experiences within them, including stretching time through tempo experimentation and creating auditory silhouettes of unseen beings, while ensuring the spiritual sanctity of these dimensions remains undisturbed. It is of importance to state that, in developing this project, the artist upholds the spiritual responsibility of keeping all and any dimensional gateways closed in recognition that — on our physical plane of existence — the territories this work occurs on was never surrendered and the territories — unseen and parallel to the ones we know and do not know today — are not to be disturbed

Romila is a writer, facilitator, and cyber-mystic who explores themes of time, liminality, and the non-linearities of queerness. Her work, which draws from her lineage of dream interpreters and birthing doulas, aims to create community through literature, spellmaking, and ritual.

Also, that evening, for the first time in MONOM, Cinna Peyghamy spatialized live in

Cosmo, Venice will be part of our European Spatial Sound Exchange (ESSE) and MusicAIRE—an initiative generously co-funded by the European Union. that will be hosted in the iconic on a 24.2 sound system. The listening session is scheduled for October 22nd.

Cosmo is a cultural and artistic project nestled in the 15th-century deconsecrated Church devoted to Saints Cosma and Damiano on the island of Giudecca. It once displayed works of art by Tintoretto, Tiepolo, along with other illustrious artists: deconsecrated in the early nineteenth century, it then became a textile factory from 1890 until the 1980s, when it was abandoned until it was restored by the City of Venice and turned into an incubator for innovative urban models.

Since its inauguration in September 2020, featuring an installation by Brian Eno and David Tremlett, Cosmo has become a pivotal platform for avant-garde art and culture.

We are pleased to reveal a collaboration with ZiMMT in Leipzig as part of the European Spatial Sound Exchange (ESSE) program and MusicAIRE—an initiative co-funded by the European Union.

ZiMMT is currently housed in a former industrial crane hall, located on the Kreativhof in the east of Leipzig. The initiators of ZiMMT founded the Atelierhaus Kontor 80 there five years ago and since then have been running a studio for 3D audio. Central to ZiMMT is its 3D audio 32.4 which is modularly installed in the hall. This system offers possibilities for production, performance, and experimentation across almost all available multi-channel audio formats—from traditional surround formats like 5.1, 7.1, and 8.1 to individual arrangements, even up to a closed dome with 32 regularly arranged speakers.

The European Spatial Sound Exchange is a pilot project initiated by MONOM and is a part of MusicAIRE, co-funded by the European Union. Its goal is to foster dialogue with European spatial sound venues and event organizers, exploring how spatial sound works by musicians can be shared between European venues with spatial sound capabilities.

The listening session is scheduled for October 27.

The first Portal will connect with in Paris, breaking the sonic boundaries of two iconic cities.

Cosmo is located in the deconsecrated church of Saints Cosma and Damiano, on the island of Giudecca. It was inaugurated in September 2020 with a site-specific installation by Brian Eno and David Tremlett. Since then, it has become a thriving hub for cutting-edge artistic and cultural activities, fostering experimental productions and innovative events. The historical significance of the building adds to its allure. Constructed in the early 1500s, it once housed works by renowned artists such as Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Palma the Younger, Padovanino, and Ricci. Following its deconsecration, the building was transformed into Venice's most prominent textile factory in 1890.

Monom's innovative sound art will be able to replicate the magical acoustics of this place within 3537 for an audio-visual delight, on June 30 at 9pm.

We are thrilled to announce the premiere of Shebang a Sound Installation by Oren Ambarchi on Thursday, September 15

Extended guitar hero Oren Ambarchi returns with a new long-form piece ''Shebang'' to be premiered in 4DSOUND at Monom Studios on Thursday 15, September 2022, mixed in 4DSOUND by Tilo von Ketelhodt, William Russell & Oren Ambarchi. Shebang features an international all-star cast of musical luminaries, their contributions recorded individually in locations from Sweden to Japan yet threaded together so convincingly (by Ambarchi in collaboration with Konrad Sprenger) that it’s hard to believe they weren’t breathing the same studio air.

The album, released by features Ambarchi on guitars and whatnot, with special guests: Chris Abrahams (piano), Johan Berthling (acoustic bass), BJ Cole (pedal steel), Sam Dunscombe (bass clarinet), Jim O'Rourke (synths), Julia Reidy (12-string guitar), Joe Talia (drums).

Though single-mindedly occupying its rhythmic space throughout, Shebang’s dense ensemble sound is carefully composed while drawing on the free flow of improvisation, with individual voices momentarily coming to the fore and subtle changes in harmony and texture. The ensemble surges through a slow series of harmonic changes before the whole shebang dissolves into a delirious synthetic mirage.

Bridging minimalism, contemporary electronics, and classic ECM stylings, and bringing together a cast of preternaturally talented contributors,
Shebang is unmistakably the work of Oren Ambarchi: obsessively detailed, relentlessly rhythmic, unabashedly celebratory.

It’s our pleasure to announce the latest addition to the Summer of Music: Vol IV (Season Finale) line-up Egedy, who returns to the Monom Lounge this time behind the decks to close the night on a high note.

Stefanie Egedy is a low frequency sound researcher whose artistic practice stems from installations to live performances as sonic propositions. Sub-bass, bass, infrasound, subwoofers, and their capacity to make themselves present in a space, are the foundations of her work. Alongside the possibilities of interaction between human/architectural bodies and sound waves, using field recordings, analog & digital synthesis. Besieged by this scenario, Egedy articulates the cross-over between sonorous and musical language to investigate communication between beings.
She co-runs the label COISAS QUE MATAM .que.matam (THINGS THAT KILL), researches the relations between light and sound with Camille Laurent, and is Executive Operations at Monom, Berlin's Center for Spatial Sound. Her academic investigation about the political impacts of social and technological acceleration during her Bachelors in Public Administration and in Philosophy resonates on her creations.
Stefanie Egedy has exhibited her works in places such as CTM Festival (Berlin), Zentrale (Vienna), Patchlab Festival (Krakow), Museu de Arte Moderno (Buenos Aires), MIS - Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo), Mamba Negra party (São Paulo) and Festival Novas Frequências (Rio de Janeiro).

Part of the 2022-2023 artist roster.
