SOFT EIS Magazine

SOFT EIS Magazine SOFT EIS is an independent print magazine published yearly in Berlin. Each issue deconstructs a topi SOFT EIS started as a magazine, and the magazine is now SOFT EIS Presse, a publishing house based in Berlin.

SOFT EIS came from an idea to explore dualities in all shapes and forms; softness and hardness being the two principle dualities that informed our first issue on s*x. The magazine is personal. Through the nature of the topics we address, we intend to highlight that being open about intimate topics is not a vulnerability. Being vulnerable is radical and a strength to be celebrated. Being soft isn't

This short poem by Dalia Maini is followed by a lengthy footnote in which she discusses with passion and fervour the impossibility of our identities. The societal pressures that pull us away from who we really are and the internal drives that beckon us back. As the title suggests, Maini’s writing style in this piece is verbose and erratic. We loved this unusual format and the structure of this submission which provides not only a piece of considered poetry but a free form, sprawling, stream of consciousness essay in the footnote.⁣

Dalia Maini is a writer and curator based in Berlin. Her current project can be found here: @bitethesaurus, an unconventional curatorial project founded in Naples. ⁣

Maya Steinberg’s short personal essay is both familiar and surreal, jumping between different thoughts to indirectly make a complex point. Steinberg discusses the languages she was raised with, talking to her girlfriend about her dreams, her first words; real reflections interposed with greater meditations about the Tower of Babel, the work of academic Edward Said and Jewish mysticism. ⁣

Understanding comes not just with knowing objective meaning but from resonance. Communication is the central tenet in our lives and although it can divide us it speaks to core internal experience that can unify all. This beautifully written piece looks at how language defines us and our experience, the writing style reflecting the more visceral and untranslatable elements of our being and communicating with others.⁣

Maya Steinberg is a writer and filmmaker based in Berlin originally from Israel. She has recently completed the MA in Visual and Media Anthropology at the Freie Universität.⁣

Rachel was drawn in by these elfsluts, as is their intended purpose, only to find herself obsessed with the task of collecting images and finding the origins of these intriguing elves and nymphs. Unsurprisingly, her research led her to endless loops of spam and malware bots leading nowhere, never revealing an original artist, context or story. ⁣This is an ongoing project which you can follow @elfslut

The eyes of millions fall upon these pop-up ads, but to find that they have no traceable or contextual existence seemed amiss and Rachel sought to remedy this. These three short narratives tell the cooky, hilarious, unusual and imaginative tales of these elfsluts and their off-the-wall daily lives. This submission certainly fits in the surreal and gives ‘unique’ a new meaning. ⁣

something that had come about just before. Mirror Four is a science fiction short story about Ester’s time in the colony of Pluto on an academic trip to study Plutonian society when first contact is made with aliens. Ester becomes wrapped up the events that follow as society unravels in the chaos caused in attempts to communicate with the extraterrestrials.⁣

This story is accompanied by an essay from the author reflecting upon the death of science-fiction author Ursula K. Le Guin in 2018. Oscar discusses the science fiction canon and its relationship to society and politics, inspired by the anthropological science fiction texts of Ursula K. Le Guin. He outlines a thesis for the effect artistic fiction can have on the political sphere and its importance in our time.⁣

This journalistic piece looks at the patterns we see in social media stars and celebrities who go from being heavily present in our feeds to disappearing with a need ‘for a social media break’. Kerr looks at why we need a break from something that should act as a social tool but in actuality plays a vital role in our personal identity. ⁣

By constantly performing for others on social media the line between performance and reality can become blurred. Can my identity be validated if there’s no one to like my post? Kerr discussed the panopticon model of social media, arguing that by using the system we are policing ourselves and each other’s identities. This oppressive structure ultimately leads us to break each other.⁣
