Day II: SHARE

Our second day turned from sustaining cinema spaces to asking how they are collectively shaped.

Amanda Egbe’s keynote invited us to think about cinema, technology, memory, and artificiality as shared terrains, before a morning of Interactive Knowledge Sharing Tables transformed the symposium into a space of exchange. Participants moved between conversations on archives, AI, budgeting, community-building, film education, distribution, preservation, and more—sharing experiences, questions, and practical tools with one another.

The afternoon continued with conversations about listening as a curatorial practice, collective learning, and building institutions alongside the communities they serve.

The day unfolded into screenings, discussions, a packed SİNEMA HANE, and a screening of films nominated by the CoC3 partners followed by an amazing DJ set by Edna Martinez !

We’re still processing the richness of this past weekend, and over the next few days we’ll be looking back at everything these days held.

Day I: SHAPE

We began by asking what it takes to imagine and sustain cinema differently.

From Jonathan Ali’s keynote on a Caribbean cinema of the commons, to presentations from our contributors across Addis Ababa, Kigali, Da Nang, Paris, New York, Lima, Mexico City, Ankara, Bali, and beyond, the day opened a shared conversation about what cinema can look like when it’s rooted in local contexts while connected through global solidarity.

Across panels on fragile infrastructures, political dependencies, and collective resistance, we heard stories of persistence. Cinemas and initiatives shared their experiences navigating censorship, gentrification, funding precarity, and institutional pressures while continuing to create spaces for gathering.

The evening’s programme of short films reminded us that cinema is not only a place where stories are told, but where communities remember, organize, and imagine futures together.

For our program tonight after the screening we have Edna Martinez DJ set to look forward to. Edna Martinez is a visionary Colombian Caribbean DJ, producer, and curator who brings champeta and the street-born Picó sound system culture of Cartagena to global audiences. Handcratted, powerful, and colorful speakers, where picoteros energize local bailes with Atro-Caribbean rhythms, channel a living tradition of music grounded in joy, creativity, and collective memory. From her base in Berlin, she brings this energy to international stages, blending deep basslines, electronic textures, diasporic beats, sounds from the SWANA region, UK funky, and other sound system influences into expansive journeys. Opening Night at SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA

Cinema of Commoning 2026 officially opened with an evening of shared reflection, conversation, and celebration.

The festival welcomed filmmakers, artists, curators, researchers, cultural workers, and audiences from across the network, beginning with opening greetings by , Malve Lippmann and Hermann Parzinger followed by a keynote from Nikita Dhawan exploring art, decolonization, and political imagination.

The evening continued with Hydra Sightings, a live performance by .welt and olivia jack , before concluding with an open-air screening of Habibi Hussein and a conversation with producer Thomas Kaske.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for opening night. Here’s to the conversations, collaborations, and moments of commoning still to come over the next few days.

Happening tomorrow is the Interactive Knowledge Sharing Tables

As part of Day II: SHARE – Exploring Strategies for Everyday Collaboration, participants will rotate between four interactive tables, each offering a different way of thinking, making, and learning together. Led by filmmakers, curators, artists, and cultural practitioners, the sessions explore topics ranging from archives and AI to alternative distribution, film education, and community-building.

A space for conversation, exchange, and collective knowledge. We’re just one day away from the kickoff of Cinema of Commoning and we’re excited to share the program for Day 3!

The final day of Cinema of Commoning 3 on July 5 will unfold through a series of guided cinema tours, exploring Berlin’s film histories and cultural infrastructures as starting points for envisioning future cinema cultures. As the symposium draws to a close, these journeys offer a space to reflect on the conversations and connections fostered throughout CoC, considering what insights, questions, and collective ambitions we might carry forward into the cinemas of tomorrow.

Featuring tours of cinema spaces and initiatives in the north of Berlin, a walk through the landscape of Black memory and movement in the city, and a walking look at the legacy of Arab Film in Early 20th Century Berlin, day 3 will ask how do the spaces, communities, and histories that surround film culture shape new possibilities for collective cultural life?

With just a few days to go until Cinema of Commoning, we’re excited to introduce our final partner cinema: Videobet!  

Videobet Et is an arthouse cinema and film centre based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It began in February 2025 as a bi-monthly curated screening programme, focused on presenting a diverse selection of Ethiopian and international independent films. Following the opening of its own 200-seat cinema in February 2026, Videobet now serves as a dedicated venue for repertory and contemporary screenings, as well as discussions and community gatherings centered on film. 
In a recent conversation, Beza Hailu Lemma, Videobet’s co-founder and creative director, spoke about the cinema’s distinctive historical significance, the balance of its programming, and its approach to community-building across film production, exhibition, and criticism. We’re just one week away from Cinema of Commoning 3!

Day Two of the program will take place on Saturday, July 4 and will focus on participatory approaches to cinema-making and cinema-keeping, exploring strategies for collaboration, community accountability, and shared cultural ownership.

Featuring a keynote by Amanda Egbe on the intersections between cinema and emerging digital tools and talks with our partner cinemas and representatives from Cinema Con Nhà Nghèo (CNN) // Cinema of Peasants , Cinemaximiliaan , CINELOGUE, , anorak, Documentary Association Europe , F-SIDES Cineclub, and more, Day Two of Cinema of Commoning will ask how can cinemas become spaces where audiences, workers, artists, and local organizations actively shape the institution itself.

Day One of Cinema of Commoning 3 will revolve around practical, future-oriented approaches to sustaining cinema spaces, building alliances, diversifying resources, and redefining the role of cinemas in contemporary society.

Featuring a keynote by Jonathan Ali and talks with our partner cinemas and representatives from La Clef Revival, UnionDocs, PxrnFilmFestival Berlin, and Ady Hornstein, Day One of Cinema of Commoning will ask how cinemas can continue to hold space for collective cultural life amidst change.
