An opera from overheard telephone conversations
Imprint: http://jeron.org/about/ “I’m sitting in the train. Where are you?” Everyone has a mobile phone these days and what was once a conversation in closed rooms is nowadays happening in the public sphere.
The mindless phone monologues in busses and trains have irritated the German artist Karl Heinz Jeron for years. A few months ago he began to write them down – two notebooks have already been filled. This is the basis for the libretto of an opera performed by tiny singing robots: four soloists and a choir. For the setting to music he will collaborate with a professional composer. The title is derived from Hermes, the god of elocution. The mobile phone conversations will be arranged around general concepts like secret, sex, guilt, betrayal. In these four acts the artists stages the recorded conversations and transform everyday life into artistic action.

It‘s becoming clearer what just happened.
It‘s about the following:
I know I‘ve done it subconsciously
all my life.
And what happened last year,
was already there.
There just wasn‘t enough proof.
I could only think:
What the hell is going on?
How to deal with something like that?
I don‘t know
if it‘s true or not.
It‘s an ongoing thing with us,
you know that, and it doesn‘t stop.
It‘s becoming clearer what just happened.

Zebrastraat: knowledge centre
During the last few years, Zebrastraat Ghent has developed into a stimulating knowledge centre with a strong interest in art. Every two years we organize a Biennial called Update, linked with the New Technological Art Award (NTAA) contest, which tries to fill in a gap in the mainstream art world, by paying attention to the technological developments that drive our global culture.
NTAA selects and presents creations in which the culture-forming role of technology occupies a central place. Low or high tech, intuitive or experimental, the creations always draw our attention to actual innovative trends. The exhibition of achievements of the selected winners is a compass that orients you to the relevant temporal and resilient use of technology in the artistic sector.
In addition to the works of the NTAA, several key works will be displayed coming from the world of the art, of scientific discoveries or breakthrough innovations that have significantly changed our way of living and thinking. These objects or concepts form the basis for a separate presentation and perception, in dialogue with the artworks of the nominees of the NTAA.

A mobile phone opera in four acts. Hermes is a unique opera performed by singing robots. Its libretto is based/was written upon mobile phones conversations heard unintentionally by the artist on the public transport means. These interrupted passages of anonymous fellow travelers constitute a classical story of love and sex, betrayal and guilt, mystery and suffering. Tiny robots — two soloists and a choir — made out of common, everyday, ready—made objects and materials, move around the stage covered with pictures and images appearing on the screen according to keywords included in the libretto of the opera.
