On Thursday 2nd December, COMMON COLD |un.thai.tled Film Festival 2021, takes a walk on the wild side!

Taking centre stage, Mattie Do's sci-fi thriller, The Long Walk (2019), is a powerful critique of the violence enacted by so-called progress narratives and the sharp boundaries that exist between modern technology and traditional shamanic beliefs. Set in rural Laos, the intertwined story – about a time-travelling killer, an innocent boy, and the company of ghosts – is a lesson on the cyclical nature of generational trauma.

⚠️Trigger Warning: family abuse, corpses and gore.

+++ After the screening, the director, Mattie Do will join us in conversation.

Mattie Do was born to Laotian refugees and raised in Los Angeles. She returned to Laos to help the government create the infrastructure necessary to bring foreign co-productions to Laos. Her debut film Chanthaly (2012) was the first Laotian film to screen outside of Southeast Asia. Her second film Dearest Sister (2016) was Laos’ first submission for Best International Film at the 90th Academy Awards.

On Friday 26th November we present HOPELESS CONDITIONS, an event as part of COMMON COLD | un.thai.tled Film Festival 2021!

The evening features two films that are an argument on the difficulties to escape from the tight grip of the Thai state and article 112, one which prohibits insulting the monarchy under the threat of up to 15 years of imprisonment.

Mr. Zero, a 2016 film directed by นัชชา ตันติวิทยาพิทักษ์ Nutcha Tantivitayapitak and ชวัลรัตน์ รุ้งแสงเจริญทิพย์ Chawanrat Rungsangcharoenthip, follows Pundit Anemia, one of the many stories in which an extremely fragile state accuses its critics of insanity in order to get rid of them.

Red Aninsri; Or, Tiptoeing on the Still Trembling Berlin Wall, a 2020 film by Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke, is a campy comment on the structural impossibility of critique: What remains when the state co-opts the demands of the movement, usurping the demands of liberation, only to expand its control?

+++ Following the screening filmmaker Sisu Satrawaha (ศิศุ สาตราวาหะ) will join us in conversation.

SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA | COMMON COLD SPECIAL! 👇🏽

Following the un.thai.tled Film Festival screening event “WE CAN BE HEROES JUST FOR ONE DAY”, this Friday from 22.30 we are delighted to host musician and artist Pisitakun who will treat us to a live music set!

Hailing from Bangkok, Pisitakun uses his music to question the current political state in Thailand, representing a decisive break from many of his Thai peers. Taking place in our intimate bar area, this is a rare chance to hear one of Thailand's most important new artists live in Berlin. Pisitakun's works are based on political speculation and the external and internal frustrations artists are subject to.

Click the link to book your tickets in advance, not to miss the screening of School Town King(2020) before Pisitakun's performance⤵

A curious, intimate and empathetic way of storytelling reminiscent of a rap video, the evening will revolve around School Town King(2020). Directed by Wattanapume Laisuwanchai, the film tells the story of two boys from the Klong Toey slums in Bangkok who share their experiences through rap.

In Serpil Turhan's films we can also discover something of our reality.«
In her recent Tagesspiegel article, 'Die Heimat zwischen Kreuzberg und Kurdistan', bi'bak collaborator, teacher and film-programme producer Madeleine Bernstorff writes about filmmaker Serpil Turhan's new documentary film, Köy.

👀https://www.tagesspiegel.de/kultur/serpil-turhan-im-portraet-die-heimat-zwischen-kreuzberg-und-kurdistan/27783190.html?fbclid=IwAR3ZJUUih2g249nQ8CvP1My7SwkvIaXUGSC-4oXL-99JnGsNPmOJdRj6N38

In his Tagesspiegel article, "Das Kino hat keine Grenzen", Fabian Tietke writes about Film Restored – Das Filmerbe-Festival (3rd - 7th of November) and the panel "Transnational Archive Efforts" which considers the preservation status of films with a background in migrant communities, what archives can do to help projects marginalized by film history and whether a “national” cinema history can be reconstructed at all without transnational archive work.

SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA | COMMON COLD SPECIAL! 👇🏽 Following the un.thai.tled Film Festival screening event “WE CAN BE HEROES JUST FOR ONE DAY”, this Friday from 22.30 we are delighted to host musician and artist Pisitakun who will treat us to a live music set! Directed by Wattanapume Laisuwanchai, the film tells the story of two boys from the Klong Toey slums in Bangkok who share their experiences through rap.

In Serpil Turhan's films we can also discover something of our reality.« In her recent Tagesspiegel article, 'Die Heimat zwischen Kreuzberg und Kurdistan', bi'bak collaborator, teacher and film-programme producer Madeleine Bernstorff writes about filmmaker Serpil Turhan's new documentary film, Köy.
