Tomorrow at 7pm is the LAST Chapter #5 HOSTING event - a Salon with Ella Ziegler: Small Talks 🍃
——
During WW2, a Belfast zoo keeper, Denise Austin, kept an elephant calf, named Sheila, at her home on the Whitewell Road when Belfast was being bombed by German Air Force in the Blitz of 1941. The Ministry of Public Security had ordered keepers to euthanise thirty-three of the most dangerous animals if the city was attacked, so Ms Denise Austin, one of the first female zoo keepers, was determined that the elephant Sheila wouldn’t suffer the same fate. Every evening the animal was walked the short distance from her enclosure to Ms. Denise Austin’s house in north Belfast, and every morning she was returned to the zoo.
——
In commemoration of Denise and Sheila, the garden, which hosts the project HOSTING, is fertilized with elephant sh*t.

Chapter #5: HOSTING is curated by Pauline Doutreluingne (@paulinedout)

Address: Bergstrasse 26, 10115 Berlin

Tomorrow at 11am is the LAST Chapter #3 IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS walk titled Excavation & Memory
with Mark Curran. 😱💥✨
——
“Language has unmistakably made plain that memory is not an instrument for exploring the past, but rather a medium. It is the medium of that which is experienced, just as the earth is the medium in which ancient cities lie buried. He who seeks to approach his own buried past must conduct himself like a man digging.” -Walter Benjamin (1932)
——
From a meeting point in the East, this excursion shall wander West through a central section of the City, stopping at significant points/moments to discuss and reflect upon what is being encountered. Places are sites of meaning and the intention is to address such meaning in the context of Berlin’s contested and traumatized fragmentedness and the city’s globalized present. In doing so, to ask what is the relationship of such meaning to notions of cultural memory/memorialization, identity and ideology and how such awareness may hold value in the understanding of our everyday and how it is constructed.

Neighborhood: Mitte, starting point: World Clock, Alexanderplatz

Giving luck until the luck all runs out...! 🍀⭐️💰 Aleks Slota’s performance “Lucky” took place last week for Chapter 2: HIDDEN TREASURES.... And TODAY is the last day to catch this performance series curated by Teena Lange! At Horse & Pony, Altenbraker Str. 18, 12053 Berlin - 5pm!!

⬇️⬇️⬇️
The artists Surya Gied and Kerstin Honeit initiate a neighborhood cinema and a local gathering. In Café Prachtwerk, Karl-Marx-Straße is celebrated as a connecting stream through the neighborhoods and communities: amongst other things with the film “Ein tiefer Blick (The deep view)” (2019), which digs deep into the street, their stories and permanent change, told from the perspective of children of the Konrad Agahd primary school and the Zuckmayer school. Celebrate, eat and discuss with us what it means to learn from Karl-Marx-Straße.

Tomorrow is the closing of Chapter #4: THE MIDDLE STUFF 😧 If you haven’t gotten a chance to see these beautiful paintings by @fernandafigueiredo and the other awesome artists in the show, you better come check it out!! Thursday July 11th, 7pm at Göhrener Str. 8A, 10437 Berlin 🌈👩🏻‍🎨
——
The exhibition investigates the domestication of time and space, a concept described by French anthropologist, archaeologist, and paleontologist André Leroi-Gourhan (1911-86), who called it a “human fact par excellence” (more so even than the invention of tools):
“As a result of this symbolic ‘domestication’ the human was able to pass from the natural rhythmicity of seasons, days, and walking distances to a rhythmicity regulated and packaged within a network of symbols —calendrical, horary, or metric — that turned humanized time and space into a theatrical stage upon which the play of nature was humanly controlled.”

The focus of the exhibition is on the structures underlying and symbolically determining everyday life, and the various ways in which we organize or domesticate time and space.
