Trinket (2008/2015), a monumental American flag writhing in the whirlwind of industrial fans, has been interpreted as a monument to hollow American patriotism. It was first shown in 2008 at Grand Arts, a project space in Kansas City, Mo., and was presented as the centre piece in William Pope.L: Trinket (2015) at the Museum of Contemporary Art, LA. Over the course of the show the flag dissolved at its constantly fidgeting end, a potent metaphor for the undermining of democracy – and, perhaps an appeal to prevent further estrangement from democratic principles: ‘People need to feel their democracy, not just hear words about it,’ Pope.L was quoted in the exhibition text by curator Bennett Simpson.

Alongside Trinket (2008/2015), Pope.L presented Small Cup (2008) at MOCA – a video that is currently on view at Schinkel Pavillon.

Cow Commercial is a part of Pope.L's Black Domestic project, a set of performances, photographs, and one video, in which he appears as a lively/edgy domestic worker. It has been interpreted as a spoof on the popular campaign “Got Milk?,” (90s) and an explicit critique of racial stereotypes that turn identities into consumable commodities.

"When you take the time to stop and look at history, you never know when it will end – suddenly, just like that, you’re in it, swimming, dreaming, floating, upside down; every sense of direction is just another layer and you ask yourself, how long have I been here gazing into this water? how long have I been here staring at my reflection? how long have I been turning to you, turning the pages of this ponder, dressed in this wonder? And you turn to me . . . laughing, punching my uncertainty, and I tumble out into the frozen floes of aisles, the mirrored lobbies, stumbling out, out, out, onto the streaming sidewalk, completely disoriented, into oncoming traffic." suggests Pope.L's voiceover in Reenactor (2012), a continuous loop of almost six hours in its longest version, in which actors in Confederate uniforms and Robert E. Lee fake beards circulate through ordinary spaces in Nashville.

Pope.L's A Vessel in a Vessel in a Vessel and So On (2007), a piece consisting of a pirate lady mannequin with a bust of Martin Luther King Jr, turned upside-down, dripping chocolate, was brought up in a recent interview with the artist– published in @taz.die_tageszeitung – on his current show Between A Figure and A Letter at Schinkel Pavillon. The sculpture seems to relate to intersectionality as a potentially infinite hole, in which cause and effect have become indistinguishable.

The Schinkel Pavillon presents a second volume of the exhibition dedicated to HR Giger, this time entering a dialogue with the work of an artist who inspired him throughout his lifetime: the subversive German Surrealist Hans Bellmer. Their provocative aesthetics, depicting at times explicit sexual acts and repulsive creatures, was for both a form of political resistance and rebellion. The exhibition space turns into a forbidden cabinet of nightmares and taboos which seduce the curious viewer with their alluring poetics HR Giger & Hans Bellmer January 22 – March 20, 2022 Curated by Laura López Paniagua @ourfriendsfromfrolix8 The artworks of HR Giger have been selected by curator Agnes Gryczkowska @agnesgryczkowska for the exhibition HR Giger & Mire Lee that was on view at the Schinkel Pavillon from Sept 18, 2021 to Jan 14, 2022. Funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds #hauptstadtkulturfonds Special thanks to Collection Witzig - Danciu and Collection and Kunstraum, Collection Mario Müller. Image: HR Giger & Hans Bellmer, exhibition view, Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, 2022; Courtesy of the artists and Schinkel Pavillon. The figure of the doll in Hans Bellmer’s œvre marks, at once, a schism in between the artist and his father and the artist and 'the system of the father'. Out of protest Bellmer abandoned his established career as a commercial artist in 1933. At the same time he engaged in increasingly obsessive relationships with the dolls he had begun to produce. "The source of my images is scandalous" said Bellmer, "because for me the world is a scandal." HR Giger & Hans Bellmer January 22 – March 20, 2022. Curated by Laura López Paniagua @ourfriendsfromfrolix8 The artworks of HR Giger have been selected by curator Agnes Gryczkowska @agnesgryczkowska for the exhibition HR Giger & Mire Lee that was on view at the Schinkel Pavillon from Sept 18, 2021 to Jan 14, 2022. Funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds #hauptstadtkulturfonds Special thanks to Collection Witzig - Danciu and Collection and Kunstraum, Collection Mario Müller. Image: Hans Bellmer, La poupée, 1932 bis 1945; Courtesy of Paris, Musée national d'art moderne, Centre Pompidou. #gigerbellmer #hrgiger #hansbellmer #lauralopezpaniagua #schinkelpavillon #schinkelklause
The exhibition brings together iconic sculptures, early paintings, and drawings of the legendary Swiss artist and creator of the Alien creature (from the namesake film) HR Giger (1940–2014), alongside a collection of graphic works and photographs of the subversive German Surrealist Hans Bellmer (1902–1975). HR Giger & Hans Bellmer January 22 – March 20, 2022. Image: HR Giger & Hans Bellmer, exhibition view, Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, 2022; Courtesy of the artists and Schinkel Pavillon. Vol. 4 of Human Fly takes us back to a vibrant evening in October 2021 at Café Keese – one of Berlin’s last traditional dance halls. Pianist and composer Hania Rani and cellist and composer Dobrawa Czocher, both at home in the context of classical music, presented their new album Inner Symphonies (Deutsche Grammophon). Hania Rani and Dobrawa Czocher have a long-standing personal relationship that first resulted in a musical collaboration in 2015. In their new album they combine their classical musical approaches with an ever-curious interest in other forms of music and art, without restricting themselves to genres. The theme of connectedness, both personal and musical, runs like a red thread through their compositions. Cast: Hania Rani (piano) @haniarani Dobrawa Czocher (cello) @dobrawaczocher, Kornelia Gradzka (strings) @korneliagradzka, Pawel Czarny (strings), Agata Dankowska (sound tech), Deutsche Grammophon (label) @dgclassics DISAPPEARING BERLIN 2021 Artistic Direction: Marie-Therese Bruglacher @m_a_r_e_s_e Project Management: Anja Lindner @anja_li_de Produktion Assistant: Patrick Kohn @ts_taurus With Human Fly, artists Joseph Kadow and Malina Heinemann create an artistic translation of the DISAPPEARING BERLIN 2021 program. Using the immediate aesthetics of phone cameras they capture the emerging synergies between artistic performances, space and architecture as well as the experiences of the audience.
Hans Bellmer (1902-1975) was one of the most uncompromising artists of the twentieth century. An associate of the Dadaists and Surrealists, throughout his work he pursued a profoundly personal, eroticized vision that defies any simplistic categorization. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ HR Giger & Hans Bellmer January 22 – March 20, 2022. Hans Bellmer understood the body as an erotic landscape probing the limits of sexuality, identity, and social order. His monstrously erotic Doll (Die Puppe, 1934), a fragmentary and lustful sculpture, was his response to the N**i ideal, a neoclassical “Aryan” body. The erotically charged sculpture Machine-Gunneress in a State of Grace (1937) is composed of parts of Bellmer's Doll.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ HR Giger & Hans Bellmer⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ January 22 – March 20, 2022.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Curated by Laura López Paniagua @ourfriendsfromfrolix8⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ HR Giger conceived by @agnesgryczkowska⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds #hauptstadtkulturfonds⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Special thanks to Collection Witzig - Danciu and Collection and Kunstraum, Collection Mario Müller.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Image: Hans Bellmer, The Machine-Gunneress in a State of Grace, 1937.
