Actress Karin Enzler journeys us through Monika Ertl‘s thoughts and encounters on her way to the political murder that she committed. Quote of the latter from the piece: „Who might be better suited to stop the marching hordes of men than one single, politically fighting and loving woman?“

French Film-Editor and Punk-Musician Stéphanie Morin created three short films out of our filming in Paris, Lyon and Izieu, in which she interviews Beate and Klaus Klarsfeld, further takes us to the site of German N**i Terror at the orphanage of Izieu and reflects in her cinematic essays whether she would have been willing to resist and pull the trigger when confronted with inhumane injustice. In between the films that contain her live-voice-over, she reminds us of Woodie Guthrie‘s motto, that also guitars contain a certain contribution to the struggle.

HOW TO K**L A FASC**T
The Life and Death of Monika Ertl in 3 Solos

25 & 26 May, 2022 - 8pm
Ballhaus Ost
Performing Arts Festival Berlin

Is it just to murder a tyrant? Can one justify an armed, antifascist resistance? Costa Compagnie follows the fearless path of Monika Ertl.
The daughter of Leni Riefenstahl’s cinematographer joined the Bolivian Liberation Army in the late 1960s and personally executed the one officer, who had Che Guevara killed. The team filmed in the Bavarian Alps, in Paris and Lyon, in La Paz and the Andes and spoke with the famous N**i hunters Serge and Beate Klarsfeld, as well as survivors of torture under Bolivia’s military dictatorship.
Political convictions, justice and vengeance: actress Karin Enzler (Switzerland), punk musician Stéphanie Morin (France) and choreographer Maque Pereyra (Bolivia) fight their way through history to the present in three cinematic and performative solos.

Is it just to murder a tyrant? Does a justifiable militant resistance exist? An ethical terrorism? Costa Compagnie follows the path of Monika Ertl with cautious skepticism and questionable admiration. The daughter of Leni Riefenstahl’s cinematographer joined the Bolivian Liberation Army at the end of the 1960s and personally executed that officer, who had Che Guevara and his successor shot. Is anti-fascism allowed to go that far?

The team filmed in the Bavarian Alps, in Paris and Lyon, in La Paz and the Andes and spoke with the famous N**i hunters Serge and Beate Klarsfeld, as well as survivors of torture under Bolivia’s military dictatorships. Political convictions, the struggle for justice or for vengeance and the quest for power – actress Karin Enzler (Switzerland), editor and punk musician Stéphanie Morin (France) and choreographer and performer Maque Pereyra (Bolivia) fight their way through history to the present day in three cinematic-performative solos.

Mazar-e-Sharif 2014
A young female journalist whose name will have to stay anonymous told us: „Mazar is a province that is considered the center of strategic meetings throughout Afghanistan. Therefore, the media believes Mazar is a very peaceful city, but that is not the reality. Mazar is not just the blue mosque after all. Mazar has 14 districts but only in 4 or 5 of them you can safely travel to. I was born and raised here and even I – as a woman – cannot move freely there.“
When we left a bakery that we visited one day, our stringer urged us to hurry, due to Taliban spotters around, casually hanging out by themselves with their bikes and mobile phones.

Kabul 2014
Soraya Afzali – a Student, photographer and human rights activist – gave us an awe inspiring interview about the current situation back then and her plans and dreams for herself and her country. When asked about her perspective on the end of the ISAF-mission, she said: „You know, the group of people who are against the government, they said. >When all the Western armies are out of Afghanistan, then we won't do war anymore. Then there will be peace in Afghanistan!< But number 1: nobody can guarantee that! And number 2: once that security is established, there is still the question of freedom. Because will women still be involved in any part of society? When this kind of regime comes to power, women just don't play a role anymore and I won't be able to do my job. I will then probably have to emigrate and do my work in another country. So all these ISAF soldiers: I think when they leave, the conflict will still be there. Because this is about women's rights and women activists and women being involved in society.“ This was 7 years ago.

Today the Taliban are entering Kabul – almost 20-years after they had to leave it. Some years ago we went to Afghanistan and spoke to the Afghan people, as well as to German and American soldiers about the „drawdown“ of Western troops that today has come to a dramatic conclusion. What does this „back-to-zero“ mean for the Afghan population, the situation for women in general – and specifically for feminist activists, LGBTQI, journalists, artists, researchers, translators, doctors, nurses, teachers and contractors with the international forces and their families? For the youth being promised a more open and politically diverse society (as problematic these terms might be)? For the people that were planning to leave the country before the rule goes back to the Taliban, putting them in even greater danger? What happens to the responsibility our elected governments including the voters took up by sending troops into the country? Does it just end with the last soldier stepping on an airplane? The least to do is to adapt immigration laws. And this is just the beginning of the list. ______________________ Video shot for our work “Conversion / After Afghanistan” 2014-2017 🎥 @stefanhaehnel #afghanistan #kabul Kulturstiftung des Bundes Ballhaus Ost Scharoun Theater Wolfsburg Theater und Orchester Heidelberg

Can we perform Shakespeare’s question of existence simultaneously on stage and in virtual space? Join the performance as avatars from multiple places? Let the audience access physically, as avatars or just watch the work onscreen? And will this be the future of theater, after all? SHAPES OF HAMLET From Costa Compagnie‘s XR-LAB „Performing in Virtual and Reality“ © December 2020 In this Extended-Reality-Lab, the dancers TingAn Ying and David Pallant share the character of Hamlet on a real stage, its virtual replica and from home, using VR- and AR-glasses. In Shakespeare's own words, they reflect on existence in Covid-times itself and its virtual extensions "in the tomorrow". The actor Hauke Heumann as Ophelia joins them via we**am from another, third location. Costa Compagnie’s technical XR-set-up in SHAPES OF HAMLET enables the performers to simultaneously perform the action of a scene together on real stage, in the digital VR-space, as well as through a simple web-browser on a mobile phone or computer. The same possibilities are offered to the audience, who can attend the performance in the auditorium, in the VR-chatroom as avatars or simply via browser. This way, performers and audience members can participate in and witness the same performance at the same time from different continents. Filmed and performed in December 2020 at Ballhaus Ost Berlin, The Internet and the apartments of the performers with Hololens (AR), Oculus Quest 2 (VR) and conventional cameras.
