For the fourth time in Berlin, WISE is inviting visionaries, pioneers, artists, and industry thought leaders to join the WISE Community. After exploring ME, MYSELF & AI in 2024, this year WISE - The Future Festival & Think Tank will take it a step further and ask: IS IT REAL?

⚡ On Friday, May 16, 2025 Andrew Rahman from the Spatial Media Lab e.V. will host a panel on “The Challenges of Live Performance in Spatial Audio” at WISE in Berlin.

Don’t miss your chance to shape the future of the industry – so check out the program and the speakers on our panel!

This course is designed for those interested in working with . You will become familiar with the terms and tools common in spatial audio. It is an introductory course to get you started with a simple and free workflow that is easy to adopt. It deals with technical and artistic concepts that differentiate spatial audio from traditional and concepts. To round things off, we will have a look at how to exchange data between the audio world and realtime 3D visual tools like or , leveraging the OSC protocol. This can be useful to e.g. share the location of sound objects.

🔗 More information about the online course can be found on the website of The NODE Institute. You can also buy your ticket there: https://thenodeinstitute.org/courses/ws24-tk-spatial-audio-an-open-source-workflow/

Welcome to the Lab!
The Spatial Media Lab is hosting our next ! This will not be our normal meetup schedule nor structure, because we believe that it is incredibly important to hear spatial audio and not just talk about it. Therefore, for this meetup, we have a very special panel of guests whom will be speaking at the for Music & Sound festival in Berlin on September 5th & 6th. Since these experts will be talking about the future of spatial audio at the festival, we wanted to give the community the opportunity to hear the future of spatial audio from these visionaries — Felix Deufel, Monica Bolles and Stefan Bock.

🔗 For more details click the link: https://spatialmedialab.org/meetup-16/

Since this meetup has a different structure than usual we politely ask that everyone plan to arrive 30 minutes early (6:30pm) so we can get everyone into the space and start the presentations without disruption. It can take quite a while to arrive at SML from certain parts of Berlin, please plan accordingly!

🗓 When? Wednesday, 04.09.2024 | Doors: 6:30pm (18:30) | Begin: 7:00pm (19:00) (GMT+2)

📍 Where? Spatial Media Lab e.V., An der Industriebahn 12, 13088 Berlin

❗️ NOTE: RSVP is not required. Please only RSVP if you are 100% confirmed to arrive on time as this is simply a way for us to get an idea how many will arrive: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/spatial-media-lab-meetup-16-new-visions-off-site-tickets-1001114389087?aff=oddtdtcreator

The Spatial Media Lab is celebrating its one-year anniversary, and you’re invited!

We can’t believe it’s already been one year since the Spatial Media Lab officially became a Verein. So much has happened since then—the installation at Alte Münze, MANIFEST:IO, securing our headquarters, tearing down some walls, our first in-house workshops, the 30th Roundtable (The NODE Institute), the TouchDesigner Summit off-site event, and the many new members which have joined.

To say thank you, we are hosting a summer BBQ/Grillfest together to celebrate. Food—sausages, meats, veggies, vegan options—and drinks—beer, water, sodas—will be provided. Just bring yourself, maybe some friends, and a good mood! We can’t wait to see you there.

🗓 When? Wednesday, 31.07.2024 at 7pm (19:00) Berlin time (GMT+2).

📍 Where? Spatial Media Lab e.V. Headquarters, An der Industriebahn 12, #407 1.OG, 13088 Berlin

The Spatial Media Lab e.V. have created a new Reaper Template which will convert an Ambisonic recording into Dolby Atmos for free!

That's right, you can finally do something with all of those ambisonic compositions you've created. By converting them to Dolby Atmos they can be published on Apple Music. Additionally, Apple Music announced they will now pay out 10% more in streaming royalties for Spatial Audio tracks, incentivizing artists and labels to publish their mixes in Dolby Atmos. Since we at the Spatial Media Lab are open-source to the core, we believe that anyone should be able to compose music using free and open-source technologies and still be able to access these additional revenue streams. So, we created a template to do just this.

The template allows you to compose in ambisonics using any ambisonic plugins or your choice, and once you have rendered your ambisonic mix, you simply drag it into the template and it will be routed into the Fiedler Dolby Atmos Composer Essential, a free plugin suite for authoring Dolby Atmos ADM files for publishing on Apple Music.

🔗 You can find the download option and more info on our website.: https://spatialmedialab.org/ambisonic-to-atmos-template/

Throwback to 2022: From September 2021 through May 2022 the Spatial Media Lab worked with world-renowned thereminist Carolina Eyck mix her ambient crossover classical album Thetis 2086 for Dolby Atmos and to run the live sound for her debut album concerts in the Zeiss-Großplanetarium in Berlin. Through the process of mixing her album, we had already prepared each track in full 3rd order Ambisonics, making preparation for the full 3D planetarium show quite easy.

It was a lot of fun working on this project and we learned so much along the way. This project proved to us that we can create an entire work in ambisonics and then only at the very last step render it to Dolby Atmos for release on Apple Music. Many thanks to for her trust and creative collaboration, which led to this fantastic result.

🔗 Read more about how the cooperation came about, how we proceeded technically and what our learnings were on our website. You can also find a few videos there: https://spatialmedialab.org/2022-carolina-eyck/

Welcome to the Lab!

The Spatial Media Lab is hosting our next ! The goal for this meetup is to bring people in the field of spatial media together to connect and discuss, to improve the quality of the work and expand the tools that are created.

▫️The theme of this online meetup is Experiences & Expectations. After the recent news of the immersive “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” failure, we want to hear from you about immersive experiences you have visited or worked on. What were your expectations? Did the event live up to them? What are some of your favorite immersive experiences and why? What were some failures and what made them a failure in your eyes?

With this discussion we hope to share what makes for a good, and a bad, immersive experience so that all of us working in this field can raise the bar for quality, together.

🗓️When? Thursday, 09.05.2024 at 7pm (19:00) Berlin time (GMT+2)

📍Where? Online at Gather.Town

The Spatial Media Lab is hosting our next ! The goal for this meetup is to bring people in the field of spatial media together to connect and discuss, to improve the quality of the work and expand the tools that are created. As this meetup is non-hierarchical, we will simply host the space and discuss what we are working on and then let the night flow. If you have something you’d like to present, please reach out to us in advance!

The theme of this meetup is Discussing Best Practices. In this meetup, we want to hear about your workflows, pipeline, and learnings. Regardless of whether you are making immersive installation art, spatial media for film and advertising, sound for games and VR, or 3D music, we want to hear from you! Whether you’ve been working in the industry since the 80s or you’re still studying at Uni, we can all learn something from one another’s experiences. Come prepared to bring some ideas and take some away. We can’t wait to hear from you!

⏰ When: Thursday, 11.04.2024 at 7pm (19:00) Berlin time (GMT+2).

📍Where: Online @ Gather.Town
