Young Europe: Non-Dominant Voices in European Youth Theatre

Thursday 6 October, 17:00 - 18:30 (CET)

"The stories we tell each other are not harmless. It’s time for change. Time for new audiences. Time for a new repertoire."

Join ETC for a high-level and event to launch the major international theatre project Young Europe IV.

This zoom webinar brings together renowned playwrights and theatre professionals to discuss writing new plays about inclusive topics in different parts of Europe, and how international collaboration can help emerging creatives find their voice on a larger scale.

It will also introduce Young Europe’s 'Forgotten Plays Committee', which is rediscovering work by writers from historically marginalised backgrounds—artists who were not granted a place in the European theatre canon, but did crucial work to oppose a one-sided history and still have the power to inspire new generations of writers and audiences.

Speakers include:

- Mohammad Al Attar, Young Europe Mentor, Syria/Germany
- Paulien Geerlings, Head Dramaturg at de Toneelmakerij and Artistic lead on Young Europe IV, Netherlands
- Tomer Pawlicki, Playwright, Poland/Netherlands
- Teunkie van der Sluijs, Head of Artistic Development at Young Vic Theatre, UK
- Olga Voronkova, Playwright, Belarus/UK

Moderated by Marina Maleni, Theatre Development Officer, Cyprus Theatre Organisation ΘΟΚ / THOC (THOC).

Robots and Deep Space: Exciting New ‘Testbed’ Project to Shake Up Digital Theatre Across Europe

LAUNCH EVENT TODAY! More info below

ACuTe, which is supported with co-funding from the European Union, brings together a consortium of 14 leading theatre and research organisations – drawn from 10 European countries – to develop experimental theatre productions using pioneering technologies.

These include robots, AI and a ‘deep space cave’, which will be each tested by different organisations to trial new ways of producing shows, telling stories on stage, and getting audiences to interact and engage with art.

The experimentation will be guided by the innovative ‘testbed’ concept, never seen before in the performing arts, and will lead to the sharing of knowledge to upskill the wider theatre and performing art sectors.

14 organisations are involved in ACuTe:

- Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Finland)
- Ars Electronica (Austria)
- European Theatre Convention (Germany)
- Azkuna Zentroa-Alhóndiga Bilbao (Spain)
- Estonian Academy of Arts (Estonia)
- Saxion University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands)
- Théâtre de Liège (Belgium)
- Landestheater Linz (Austria)
- De Toneelmakerij (Netherlands)
- Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica (Slovenia)
- Det Norske Teatret (Norway)
- Academy for Theatre and Digitality (Germany)
- Schauspielhaus Graz (Austria)
- “Marin Sorescu” National Theatre of Craiova (Romania)

ACuTe will launch on 8 September at Ars Electronica 2022 with the panel discussion: Digital Theatre - Democratization of a Medium: https://ars.electronica.art/planetb/en/digital-theatre/

In the hope that we are approaching the end of the pandemic, we invite you to read Paradigm Shift a great essay written by Iris Laufenberg, ETC Vice-President and General Manager & Artistic Director of Schauspielhaus Graz Austria.

In this poetic analysis of the pandemic, she weaves together references to 20th Century German playwright Heiner Müller and a vampiric Tilda Swinton to set out how theatre (and art in general) influence our understanding of the world – and why we now have a chance to re-write this narrative into one that is more in tune with nature, death, and each other.
