"The work we do in a classroom is perhaps the most important [...] Be brave enough to trust the risky idea, and be bold enough to put your diverse audience first."

Dramaturg Mona vom Dahl (Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe) talks about the Young Europe IV classroom play, 'Raumrauschen' ('Room Rumours').

'Raumrauschen' is a participatory play taking pupils on a journey of discovery in an interactive theatre experience that explores power, responsibility, and the effects of words.

This classroom play will be featured at the Young Europe Festival hosted by SNG Nova Gorica, from 17 - 19 April 2024.

🔥Register for our next webinar on 'Relaxed Performances (ETC Members only)!

Can relaxing the (sometimes unspoken) rules around performances allow theatre to welcome and embrace new audiences by meeting their needs?

➡️When did "relaxed performances" appear, where do they come from, what are the goals of offering them? What changes would you have to make to your "normal" theatre evenings to offer a more relaxed experience to your neurodivergent, noise-sensitive or chronically ill audiences?

Guided by the expertise of French non-profit "Culture Relax" & concrete examples from other ETC Member Theatres, join the ETC Webinar on Relaxed Performances on 31 January 2024 to explore one more way towards more accessibility and inclusion in European theatre!

🔥Every week, ETC takes you on a tour and presents you with a selection of exciting performances from our Member Theatres! Take a look ⬇️

1. In 1958, Radio 3 broadcasts, for the first time, an unprecedented little jewel of political-cultural satire, 'The Warrior, the Amazon, the Spirit of Poetry in the Immortal Verse of Foscolo' by Carlo Emilio Gadda. Sixty-five years later, the text is performed on the Fondazione Teatro Due stage to honour the Italian literature engineer.

2. Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in a village near the forest... With 'Hello, Little Red Riding Hood?' Prešernovo Gledališče Kranj presents a modern play that preserves the original story but puts it into a fun game of different theatre genres and styles.

3. 1871: Babette, a celebrated cook from Paris, has to leave the country due to the uprisings of the Paris Commune. Are the conditions for creating art always present? What does the struggle for artistic perfection mean if it does not resonate with those who witness this struggle? 'Babette's Fest' marks a turning point at Staatstheater Braunschweig.

4. Raphaela Edelbauer's celebrated Vienna novel 'The Incommensurables' reads like a road movie through the capital of the disintegrating Habsburg monarchy on the eve of WWI. Volkstheater Wien takes audiences on an irresistible trip through magnificent palaces and the war-drenched streets of Vienna, in a fascinating and highly entertaining mixture of theatre, film and graphic novel.

5. Four women inhabited by a common strength, strange creatures with glistening hair, perambulate in the reflections of water on stage as well as on screen. Those muddled swells double their bodies, free them from gravity and exert destructive attraction over them. Captivating unseen worlds emerge on the stage of Escher Theater.

🔥Every week, ETC takes you on a tour and presents you with a selection of exciting performances from our Member Theatres! Take a look ⬇️

1. In meticulous 1960s environments the size of dollhouses, a story full of lies, passion and desire for power unfolds. In 'The World Is Ful of Married Men,' MALMÖ STADSTEATER brings to the stage a lustful mix of soap opera, satire, po*******hy and drama where everyone has to work hard to achieve their goals.

2. Why do we deny our lust when it is unrelenting? How and why is the inability to express one's needs born in a person? What happens when we don't speak, ignore and silence the truth? 'Unfaithful' at Vilniaus mažasis teatras looks into love, passion, conflict and infidelity.

3. Judgment is all around us. In sight, in movement, in the family, on the street, in the theatre. 'The Trial' is a representation of the burden - the one imposed from the outside, but more importantly - the one we carry inside. Crnogorsko narodno pozorište pushes the audiences to reflect on man's innate guilt and struggles.

4. Činohra SND explores the intricate terrain of adolescence and mental health with 'What's Up!'. Delving into the pervasive sense of helplessness and the daunting spectre of uncertainty regarding the future, this 'classroom play' highlights the importance of asking for help.

5. “I'm a mother. I have a daughter called Matilde, who was born in 2020, at a time when the world seemed to be in more than enough disarray to deal with a pandemic. And here we are. Me, Matilde and the world… and all the Matildes in the world.” Starting from an autobiographical element that is the experience of motherhood, 'Letter to Matilde' at São Luiz Teatro Municipal comes from a very intimate place, between fear, guilt and unmeasured joy. Available on the Prospero platform.

Happy International Day of Consent!

"Consent is so much more than a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Consent is about how we connect, with ourselves, with each other, and with the world we make together. Consent is transformative."

Founded by theatre professional and researcher Jenn Wilson, the International Day of Consent highlights consent as a practice and a tool for making positive change.

We had the honour of having Jenn Wilson with us on Tuesday, as she presented an insightful webinar on 'Theatre & Consent' to our Member Theatres.

💥Some snapshots from another Young Europe IV premiere!

On 22 November, Činohra SND offered a performance of 'What's Up' ('Čaute!') before a classroom.

💫Written by YEIV playwright Tereza Trusinová, this play explores the intricate terrain of adolescence and mental health.

Adolescence unfolds as a turbulent journey marked by struggles, a pervasive sense of helplessness, and the daunting spectre of uncertainty regarding the future. In the hands of Trusinová, these themes come to life in this thought-provoking 'classroom play.'

🔥On 22 November, Fondazione Teatro Due hosted 'Erwartung,' an opera produced by the Teatro Arriaga Antzokia, thanks to an ETC Performance Exchange Grant!

This opera was produced and premiered by the Teatro Arriaga in June 2021 and staged again in April 2022.

In this production directed by Calixto Bieito, the outstanding Lithuanian soprano Ausrine Stundyte performs Arnold Schönberg's enigmatic opera, accompanied on the piano by maestro Andrej Hovrin.

Phantasmagorical figures intertwine in the shadows; the cloak of night falls over the uncertainty of the protagonist desperately seeking her lover while the shadow of misfortune looms over her.

Staged imaginatively by Bieito, Ausrine Stundyte's brilliant performance brought the full intensity of this work to the audience.

The ETC International Theatre Conference is in full swing, and we are ready to welcome our Member Theatres on the second day with a very special keynote lecture by renowned journalist Colette Braeckman!

➡️Timisoara was at the centre of the Romanian revolution in December 1989 – and the rush by news media to discover and publish sensational information led to the widespread publication of false information about a so-called “mass graves affair”.

Journalist Colette Braeckman travelled to Timisoara on 23 December 1989 and published a few weeks later an article titled ‘Je n’ai rien vu à Timisoara’ (I Have Seen Nothing in Timisoara) in the Belgium newspaper Le Soir.

Based on her experience and years of journalistic work, Colette Braeckman will discuss the “mass graves affair” and the ensuing media disinformation as a vital warning about rushing to the truth – and, in contrast, the benefits of slow and critical reflection that theatre can offer audiences.

📣Dear Member Theatres, our next ETC International Theatre Conference, called 'SHARE', is just around the corner!

We are thrilled to welcome you to the Teatrul National Timisoara in Romania from 09-12 November, for an event that will bring together around 80 participants from 25+ countries.

This edition will stress the importance of collaboration and peer-to-peer learning as we elaborate on ETC’s future work and priorities, and also build on the themes of disinformation and theatre as an open, democratic space, with a keynote lecture by esteemed journalist Colette Braeckman.

Take a look at our rich programme and the performances awaiting you. We all look very much forward to seeing you in Timisoara!
