ZK/U INTERVENTION // THE FLAGS OF SOLIDARITY // ZIP GROUP

After February 24, when Russia unleashed the full-scale war of aggression in sovereign Ukraine, it became impossible for us to stay and continue working in Krasnodar. Typography CCA, for which ZIP Group and the center’s team dedicated a lot of effort in the course of ten years, was labeled a ‘foreign agent’ by the state authorities. From that moment on, we became a shattered nomadic self-organization relying on collectivity and intangible connections.

For the first months in exile, we settled in Yerevan, Armenia. Though, gradually everyone went in different directions: part of the Typography CCA is currently in Berlin, some colleagues moved to Cologne, and some remained in Armenia. We have been displaced from our native context, but we keep on coming up with new ways of maintaining ties with it.

ZK/U FELLOW INTRODUCTION // AMY BOULTON // SEP 02 - NOV 30 2022

In her practice, Amy explores current issues around public space, labour and technology through a feminist lens. She seeks to create accessible entry points into these topics through choreographing a bodily encounter with the work. Visually she plays with expectations, using appropriated forms and humour to accommodate multiple levels of engagement.

During her residency at ZK/U Amy developed the project 'Training Set', which uses sculpture and interactive audio to explore the use of emerging voice assistant technologies to meet our complex human needs for structure, care and companionship.
Fictive AI personas such as Siri and Alexa are becoming integrated into daily life. As surrogate secretaries, therapists, housewives and health coaches, they attempt to imitate and commodify feminised forms of labour in order to gently prompt users into behaviours of self-quantification and optimisation. The project aims to find ways to exaggerate these tropes in order to denaturalise them.

ZK/U FELLOW INTRODUCTION // MARI MATTSSON // OCT 04 - NOV 30 2022

Mari Mattsson is an artist based in Stockholm, whose work centers around imagination and perception through bodily senses and social agreements on reality. In an exploration of movements (i.e. spatiality, time and repetition) and the hierarchy of the senses, the work usually presents as installations with sound, metal, storytelling, found materials and most recently glass and light.

Mari’s stay at ZK/U was centered around researching a graphic score for an ensemble that later will be the foundation of a sound installation. The research was made with a sound recorder and in the company of writings by Octavia E. Butler, Ursula K. Le Guin and composer Pauline Oliveros, on how sound can potentially evoke other imaginations of past, present and future beyond the singularity of sight. The process of thinking around listening and time has been informed by the soundscape created by the railway and harbor next to ZK/U that the residency building’s acoustics resonate.

This residency is funded by the Royal Institute of Art Stockholm (KKH), Sweden.

ZK/U EXTENSION // TOPPING-OUT CEREMONY

On 17.11.2022, the topping-out ceremony for the new part of the ZK/U building was finally celebrated with greetings from the State Secretary for Tenant Protection and Neighbourhood Development, Ülker Radziwill, the Deputy District Mayor and District Councillor for Urban Development and Facility Management, Ephraim Gothe and the Neighbourhood Councillor Jutta Schauer-Oldenburg.

In order to meet the increased interest locally and internationally, ZK/U has been undergoing an energetic and spatial expansion since 2019. The previous event hall will be enclosed by a transparent shell while retaining its original character. Work and event spaces will be created on top of the hall to meet the urgent space needs of cultural and social initiatives. On the roof of the extension, a terrace will be created that is visible from afar and can be accessed by the public; it will become an exhibition space and meeting place as an "urban stage". Here, urban art, urban innovation and neighbourly cohesion will be made accessible and celebrated without barriers.

The partial opening of the extended part of the building is planned for the end of 2023, with full commissioning in 2024. The design, planning and implementation for this are the work of Peter Grundmann Architekten, which won the "House of the Year" award this year.

The expansion is funded by the European Union, the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Berlin within the framework of the Future Initiative for Urban Districts, Social Cohesion Programme.

ZK/U AUSBAU // RICHTFEST

Urban Mining Moabit – Soil Samples Rubble Mountain //

In Moabit, near Berlin's main train station, two mountains rise more than 50 meters high. Called simply "Rodelberg" on the city map today, traces of gone life, ideas and spaces are hidden here. In a two weeks long reserach process we will dig into the ground, searching for narrations of memory and future.

24.11.2022 // OPENHAUS NOVEMBER 2022 // STACEY EJIROGHENE OKPARAVERO

Ókakò r’Évu —bringing in the leaves //

Ókakò r’Évu" in Urhobo (means plant womb) and it is an installation made from translucent fabric in the shape of a pyramid, with an entry hole for people to come in and sit). It is a plant womb that will transform gradually, as seeds have been planted in the earth within and around it and even within its pockets so they germinate in the spring time and the womb becomes an evolving eco-liminal space where people can enter and feel the life of the earth mother pulse.

It is a safe space for the earth to birth but also for us to mindfully transform our minds as we engage thoughtfully with the earth knowing we are nestled in her sacredness, feeding on her energetic pulses but also giving offerings of water and love within the space as an exchange. Bringing in the leaves is a performance centered around collectively gathering leaves from the neighborhood in Moabit. These leaves will then be tenderly placed within the plant womb installation to cover the earth (mulching)

Through this work, Stacey's creative practice intersects with her plant nurturing and meditative practices which raises consciousness on living mindfully, embodying softness, healing, forming communities centered around collective awareness of these intersections. Ókakò r’Évu, holds within itself an eco-liminal space that draws from intuitive and ancestral wisdom for collective sharing.

Stacey Ejiroghene Okparavero is the artist selected for the LAGOS-BERLIN residency programme by the Goethe-Institut Nigeria together with the partners 16/16, SAVVY Contemporary and ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics.

We walk together under the rainbow //

After decades of grass root activism, India’s supreme court ruled section 377 is unconstitutional, which criminalized the physical intimacy between two consenting same-sex adults on 6th September 2018. How much has the life of Q***r people in India changed after decriminalizing homosexuality? Do they still receive the respect they deserve from society? Are they treated equally? Are q***r children growing up without facing any bullies?
As much as I and my fellow q***r friend's experience, coming out of the closet in India is a privilege only enjoyed by the few. Su***de news of LGBT+ people is frequent in India; often, they don’t get the media attention, and there are unsolved trans murder cases that didn’t find any justice.
This is why it is essential to talk about Q***r people and Q***r lives, so it keeps reminding our existence.

Intersectional AI (experiments in progress) //

What profound shifts in infrastructure, language, communities, and perspectives need to occur to make machine learning more ethical, more equitable? The Intersectional AI Toolkit argues that anyone should be able to understand what AI is and what AI ought to be. In-studio experiments build on Intersectional AI principles gathered during zine-making workshops, in order to experiment with approaches to machine learning made tangible and approachable, caring and wild.

This residency is funded in collaboration with Junge Akademie der Künste Berlin under the program “AI Anarchies”.

The Agency of Nowhen is a series of episodes that explore everyday math and perception towards concepts of success, failure, coincidence, randomness, and bias. Several agents, new in each episode, tell their own stories that involve cognitive distortion of information and data. The Agency of Nowhen is a roundtable of negotiations that never took place, it's a symbol of different systems of measurements that are waiting to be synchronized.

Visitors to the Openhaus will be invited to listen to a series of sound sketches and experiments which expand Pedros inquiry into the long history of “technical listening” in Germany as an instrument of power, from forced phonograph recordings of prisoners of war, synthesizer development as a show of ideological prowess, to the use of artificial intelligence in asylum processes.

This time, Pedro is exploring the connections between the “Labor für akustisch-musikalische Grenzprobleme” founded in 1956 in East Berlin, and the deployment of the so-called “dialect recognition software” by the German migration authorities in cases of undocumented asylum seekers since 2017.

[STUDIJSKO PUTOVANJE - BERLIN]

🇬🇷 The final stop on our month-long journey in Ioannina had us thinking about our relationship with the environment, how to step out of human-centered narratives and how collective practices of care and protection play out in this region. We met with activists, artists and scholars who are engaged in the constant struggle of preserving nature as a common. We spent time with Dimitris Papageorgiou, Photometria Festival, local enviromental activists and the Epirus Mushroom Society. This trip concludes the travelling portion of , but the experience continues as our artists go off to process and create. We’ll be sharing deeper insights and new stories in the coming weeks! 🇦🇱 During our visit to Tirana we reflected on memory - how it can oppose the official narrative, how it can reveal the layers of a place’s history, culture, political landscape and of environment. We shared encounters with individual and collectives of researchers, scientists and artists who pave the way to a more positive reality through revealing hidden histories, spaces and even informalities and injustices and by working together bring these dimensions of life to light.
We spent time with Bora Baboci, Arba Baxhaku, Taulant Bino, Bazament Art Space, Valentina Koca and the ZETA Contemporary Art Center, Ana Shkreli and Berk, the AOS-Albanian Ornithological Society, Radical Sense, the dancers of the Was bleibt kollektiv - Gentian Doda.

⭐️ Going to Kosovo had us reflecting on being on this journey together and on all the different ways that collectiveness and limitations interact in the region and in the arts. Through the lens of Manifesta Biennial, Dokufest and Shtatëmbëdhjetë we saw the different ways in which the artists, curators and activists we encountered deal with limitations that should be isolating, but through their work and collective imagination create new, vibrant spaces and realities.
We spent time with Nita Deda, the team of Dokufest and LUMBARDHI, Nita Zequiri and encountered the Manifesta Biennal. The artists also staged a collective creative action that celebrated the ways we interact and understand our collective as it moves through this journey.

hi all a sloghtly urgent request. my friend and former zku resident from russia is applying for asylum to germany. he and his family need a place to stay and likely art related income as he is a street artist and academic. any leada esp from the founders would be hugely appreciated.
🏛 Our visit to made us rethink and rediscover architecture, archiving and imagination in ways only this city could. The artists, activists, researchers and curators we met with all shared their unique practices and understanding of the way meaningfulness can be preserved in physical spaces, in creative practices, in the way we relate to each other. We also started the beginnings of some collaborative creative works that we’re going to be exploring more as we move to Kosovo this week 👀
We spent time with Ivana Dragsic, Hristina Ivanoska, Bojana Janeva, Jana Kocevska, Meri Batakoja and sat in on a lecture by Ian Chambers & Boaventura de Sousa Santos curated by Viki Mladenova.
