🌴Birds at San Francisco River Vintage Poster ☝kuriosis.com

The incredible book made by Karl von Martius is the first big study about the Brazilian Landscape, anthropology and flora.
Von Martius started his journey in 1817 and walked from Rio de Janeiro through the Northeast Brazilian coast and stopped in 1820 on the north state of Pará, in the Amazon Forest region with his sketches and studies.

Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius "Karl von Martius" was born on April 17th, 1794 in Erlangen, Germany.

In 1817, von Martius was sent to Brazil by the Bavarian King.

In one of the most successful scientific expeditions of all time, Karl von Martius and J. B. von Spix spent the next four years travelling from Rio de Janeiro over São Paulo to Belém at the mouth of the Amazon, from where they went up the river by canoe.

Altogether, they traveled over  10,000 km and sent back over 3,500  collections of birds, insects, and other animals. Minerals and ethnographical artifacts were also collected. They became the foundations of the "Mineralogische Staatssammlung" (Bavarian State Collection of Minerals in Munich.

When he returned to Germany in 1821, von Martius began to publish up his results, publishing in short sequence "Nova genera et species plantarum, quas in itinere per Brasiliam ...collegit" (1824–1832, 3 volumes), "Icones selectae plantarum cryptogamicarum" (1827) and his opus magnus, the "Historia naturalis palmarum" (1823–1850).

Von Martius also went further and made essays on several characteristics of the Brazilian economy, medicine, and culture.

In 1840, he worked on his epic opus  "Flora brasiliensis". This collaborative effort of included over 60 authors. He worked on this bok until his death.

The book collection was completed by A. W. Eichler in Munich and later by I. Urban in Berlin Flora brasiliensis was completed in 1906.

The "Flora Brasiliensis"  remains the major reference work for taxonomists researching and developing Brazilian Flora. This epic work includes over 20,000 species. From these almost 6000 were newly described in the book.

If you look on our COLLECTIONS page, you will find more wonderful images from Von Martius.

🌐Ana holds up an XL Planet Earth while Scott worries if he can print all the orders today.

When printing matt black prints, sometimes it takes 3 or 4 attempts. The ink takes extra time to dry. We must handle it carefully.

The extra attention to detail is what always makes the difference! 💪

🌿The complete collection of Karl Blossfeldt Photogravures ☝kuriosis.com

Best known for his close-up photographs of plants and living things, Karl Blossfeldt published the epic series Urformen der Kunst in 1929.  He was inspired, as was his father, by nature and the ways in which plants grow. He believed that "the plant must be valued as a totally artistic and architectural structure."

In Berlin from the late nineteenth century until his death, Blossfeldt's works were primarily used as teaching tools and were brought to public attention in 1928 by his first publication Urformen der Kunst (Art Forms in Nature). Published in 1928 when Blossfeldt was 63 and a professor of applied art at the Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst, Urformen der Kunst quickly became an international bestseller and in turn, made Blossfeldt famous almost overnight.

His beautiful photographs of plants, flowers and seed heads are just as unique today as when they first appeared in Urformen der Kunst, (Archetypal Forms of Art), 1928 and Wundergarten der Natur, (The Wondergarden of Nature), 1932.

🦠Hilma Af Klint Exhibition Poster The Ten Largest Nr 8👆kuriosis.com

A stunning reproduction inspired by the exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2019 of the Swedish painter Hilma Af Klint.

The story of Hilma Af Klint is truly a unique one. If we had to tell her story, we would need hundreds of pages to tell everything about her, starting from her early life until even after her death. Af Klint was not the kind of artist people talked about her during her life or ten or twenty years after her death, and her notoriety was after she died, like most painters. In this case, the difference was that she indeed knew when was the correct time to appreciate her and be rapt by her work.

Af Klint was born in Sweden in 1862. She studied Arts in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. She studied arts for seven years there, and after finishing her studies, she dedicated herself to paint landscapes and portraits for ten years.

You can visit our blog to find out more about her: https://www.kuriosis.com/blogs/news

https://www.kuriosis.com/collections/george-barbier-fashion-illustrations

George Barbier or Georges Augustin Barbier, (1882–1932) was one of the great French illustrators of the early 20th century. Born in Nantes, France on 16 October 1882, Barbier was 29 years old when he mounted his first exhibition in 1911 and was subsequently swept to the forefront of his profession with commissions to design theatre and ballet costumes, to illustrate books, and to produce haute couture fashion illustrations.

For the next 20 years Barbier led a group from the Ecole des Beaux Arts who were nicknamed by Vogue "The Knights of the Bracelet"—a tribute to their fashionable and flamboyant mannerisms and style of dress. Included in this élite circle were Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Pierre Brissaud (both of whom were Barbier's first cousins), Paul Iribe, Georges Lepape, and Charles Martin.

During his career Barbier also turned his hand to jewellery, glass and wallpaper design, wrote essays and many articles for the prestigious Gazette du bon ton. In the mid-1920s he worked with Erté to design sets and costumes for the Folies Bergère and in 1929 he wrote the introduction for Erté's acclaimed exhibition and achieved mainstream popularity through his regular appearances in L'Illustration magazine. Barbier died in 1932 at the very pinnacle of his success. He is buried in Cemetery Miséricorde, Nantes.

Karl Blossfeldt (June 13, 1865 – December 9, 1932) was a German photographer who worked in our hometown of Berlin, Germany.
