Joan Didion’s iconic 1979 packing list, printed in “The White Album”, is more than a checklist. It’s a meditation on what we choose to carry, and why. It’s the things we don’t talk about because it’s a quiet language, something strapped to our backs, heavy, yet weightless. What have you carried across cities, years, and versions of yourself?

Submit your writing to Issue 13, CARRY now: https://www.fureviewberlin.com/submit

Submissions close on March 1st. We look forward to receiving your work.

Say it’s time to go. Say it’s time to carry on, regardless. Say it’s time to pack your keys, your boots, your notebook. Your scarf, your sister, your regret. Carry your heart on your sleeve and belief at your chest. Carry the world on your shoulders and your groceries, too. Say it’s time to carry a word with its weight and its meaning. Say your bags are heavy. Say we are each called what we carry.

Dear Berlin literary friends,

FU review is searching for a social media manager! Are you social media savvy and keen to get involved with a Berlin literary journal?

We are a volunteer run journal so this is also a volunteer role. As well as running our social media, you will have the option to get involved with other aspects of the journal. This could include helping organise events, editing texts or supporting the journal's development—depending on your time and areas of interest.

Please email us at [email protected] with a bit about yourself, your availability, relevant experience, examples (if any), and why you think you’d be a good fit for this role and our journal.
We care more about motivation than experience! So don’t be shy.

The deadline for applying is 15.08.25. Position to ideally start before September 2025.

With love, the FU Review team

Our Cyborg Writing Workshop was so good!! Thank you to those who came down to Dahlem to hear the wise words of our editor Elizabeth Schippers, share their writing and better understand the tools we use to communicate.

Hot literary things are brewing behind our scenes. Stay tuned!

“We can communicate by voice without technology, but if we want to write something, we must pick up a tool in order to make that happen.”

The FU Review invites you to a free (!) workshop on Cyborg Writing on the 26th of June at 16:00 at the JFK Institute.

We invite you to think about and experiment with the medium that you use to write, and bring attention to the tools that shape the way we communicate. By paying attention to our interactions with technology, we can use those interactions to actively reshape our own writing.

Please send us a DM if you want to join — there will be limited capacity. Would love to see you there!
