Node Center for Curatorial Studies was created in order to offer a platform to teach, experiment, and investigate subjects related to curatorial studies, and contemporary art practices. The Center´s core activity stems from the Curatorial Studies Program that offers its participants the possibility of expanding their work experience, with professional feedback and technical support, by developing projects in Berlin. CURATORIAL STUDIES RESIDENCY PROGRAM The Curatorial Studies Residency Program offers students the opportunity to pursue theoretical-practical investigations, with professional feedback and technical support, by developing projects in Berlin. The program lasts eleven weeks -thirty hours per week-. During this time the resident will enjoy a shared office were he can develop his research, as well as an area for experimenting with new exhibition formats. Node offers residents necessary resources for curatorial investigations and its practical applications. At the same time, residents will participate in activities that are programed by Node: workshops, seminars, meetings with guest specialists, artist's work presentations, and visits to exhibition spaces, among others. www.nodecenter.org Educational Online Platform: www.nodecenter.net

We proudly present Node Talks! - an ongoing series of virtual artist studio visits, curator talks and practical seminars that aim to make arts education accessible, while supporting our fellow creatives, and highlight artistic practices from around the world during the lockdown.

Node Talks will share inspiring approaches to art and curating, ‘real world’ skills that aren’t typically taught at university, and it'll give you the opportunity to ask curators, artists, and art professionals the questions you always wanted to ask.

Our first guest is @stine_marie_jacobsen and her talk will approach the question of how we can make socially engaged art in times of social distancing. Stine is a conceptual artist who continuously works on participatory projects with non-art institutions. She creates open structured projects that give participants a collaborative and dialogic space.

Join us live on the 14th of May, 5:30 PM CET! More information here: https://bit.ly/2LaWoZY

What would the Situationists, Surrealists and Fluxus artists do today?

These days where most of us are confined at home, “Keep Walking Intently” takes us on a journey through the meandering and peculiar footsteps of these avant-grade artists as they wandered around cities like Paris and New York. By walking intently, they transformed this essential human action into a creative act that allowed them to encounter the marvellous and enchanting in the most banal, everyday environments.

How to describe the relationship between art and politics?
Since the 1970s, under the influence of neoliberalism, contemporary art has become a global phenomenon. However, activist art has prospered within this situation under the term “Social Practice”. “Delirium and Resistance. Activist Art and the Crisis of Capitalism” by Gregory Sholette offers an account of the complex relationship between politics and art in a neoliberal society.

Dear Node community,

The global outbreak of Covid-19 has greatly impacted people’s lives all over the world. Among the various sectors that have been heavily affected financially, is the art community. In response, we have decided to offer a 20% discount on all our courses as of today, for the foreseeable future.

We want to continue to support and facilitate the possibility for remote learning, while also creating a space where like-minded creatives from around the world can connect, acquire valuable knowledge, and share ideas.

For bachelor and undergraduate students whose studies have been disrupted, some of our courses also offer university credits, look for the courses with the U symbol!

We hope that you stay safe and healthy, and if you are not doing this already… please stay inside!

Take care,
Node team

What were some of your favourite art shows that you visited in the past few months? If you’d like, please share them with us and we’ll repost them so we can revisit them together in these times of quarantine. 🤍 Pictured here is an installation from the exhibition “Behind the screen” at the KINDL Centre for Contemporary Art in Berlin, which we visited last year. Curated by Anne Schwarz, the show delves into technological change and how behaviour and thinking can be changed by it.

Cozying up with good books makes it easier staying at home. Today we’re revisiting this classic by #AllanKaprow “Essays in the Blurring of Art and Life”: “I’m not sure whether what we do now is art or something not quite art. If I call it art, it is because I wish to avoid the endless arguments some other name would bring forth. #nodereads #stayinghome

Objects of Affection (During the Covid-19) Objects are never neutral: symbolic of a period, affect, desire, malaise or memory, they are central to networks of relationship that help us understand reality and ourselves within it. Now let's imagine a historian who would like to talk about life during the Covid-19, in Italy as well as elsewhere in the world, through images of objects that have become symbolic of this period for each of us by arranging them into an exhibition.
What objects, beyond sanitary devices (such as masks, gloves and others), could become part of this exhibition, and why? MIRABILIA (https://www.facebook.com/culturaemirabilia/), a small group of thoughtful, committed people from different fields, launches the project Objects of affection (during the COVID-19) virtual exhibition (free of charge, freely accessible) which will feature images of objects as well as accompanying narratives explaining the choice of the particular object. The content of the exhibition will be created by those who want to contribute to this common effort to convey, as well as to reconstruct, the visual representation of this period collective feeling. Taking part:
➤ Choose an object that for you is symbolic of this period. It might be an object you began to use since the emergency began, or one you have become particularly fond of during the lockdown, or something you consider representative of the situation: it can be any object of your choice, except the medical disposals (masks, gloves and other).
➤ Take a good quality photo of the object (the resolution needed should be no lower than 800x600 pixels), which would be representative of its shape. aim for good light and a sharp focus. We are accepting formats such as JPG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, please refrain from using others, such as .pdf.
➤ Download the participation (including the release of rights) here https://tinyurl.com/ydabs5sy and fill it with brief personal data (such as name and surname, age, city, country, occupation), as well as the name or nickname that you want us to use for your exhibition entry, a very brief description of the object and, moreover, the reasons for your choice: why this particular object and what it means to you.
➤ Send the photos, along with the participation form, before May 18th, 2020 to [email protected] We kindly thank you in advance for your participation to this project aimed at collecting material for this virtual exhibition. Your contribution will help us understand better how we are dealing with the present and we are feeling during this period, and to share these insights and feelings thereof with the audience of the exhibition.
