Rhizosphere: The Big Network of Small Worlds - Art Science Node

May 17th is the World Information Society Day. Thinking about the world beyond the human societies, we are becoming more and more aware that the structure of our reality is based on dynamic networks in constant interactions, incorporating communication occurying on and between various scales, landscapes and organisms.
Art & Science Node is proud to be part of the "Rhizosphere: The Big Network of Small Worlds" project – an innovative, interdisciplinary program in the field of art-science education, serving as a response to changes taking place in both our environment and the contemporary culture.
Inspired by research on plant network strategies and the “Wood Wide Web”, the project investigates the potential impact of the gained knowledge on the process of cultural paradigms change, increase of the ecological awareness, and development of the social ecosystems.

Virophilia

In the description of the "Virophilia" project, Taiwanese artist and designer based in Eindhoven Pei-Ying Lin reflects on the human-viruses encounters, while proposing a series of events that intend to construct a fresh discourse and more sensible understanding of the interspecies relationships’ nature. The artist writes – "the biological world is vast and evolving. We as one of the biological habitants that share the same basic building blocks with other living and semi-living things, are born to be included in the cycle of evolutions. We share the same genetic codes with viruses, and for their semi-living status, we have not yet developed a medicine to cure them, but only merely to stop them from further replicating. At the same time, not all viruses are pathogens. New discoveries of beneficial viruses are starting to reveal, some are even crucial for our survival."

Can we start to see the connotation of viruses differently, especially those that cause infectious diseases? Can we initiate a further relationship with the viruses…

"19/12" by Andre Bartetzki

Get immersed into “19/12” – an audio-visual composition by Andre Bartetzki, one of the EpiMimesis’ project lead team members.
It was composed in October 2020 on the occasion of the online edition of digitIZMir – festival for electroacoustic music & digital art.
“19/12” was realized during the rise of the second "wave" of the COVID-19 pandemic. The source material are binaural field recordings done in December 2019 in Singapore and Australia as well as short video sequences taken in and near Berlin.
Best to be experienced with headphones and full screen playback.

Modern education should be based on problem solving, developing scientific and critical thinking, as well as improving the ability to co-operate in groups. In the era of the digital world, the possibility to work in international teams and projects is also important for the social abilities and up-to-date skills development. Thus, in 2020 the partners of the Rhizosphere interdisciplinary project took up a new challenge, supporting “Wild Networking – WiFi of Plants and Fungi” – an interdisciplinary education project completed in the frame of eTwinning EU platform for schools by its amazing Polish leader – Tomasz Ordza, director of Kazimierz Nowak Elementary School in Dąbrówce, and the teachers from schools in Turkey (Seda Göçhan) and Portugal (Helena Pires). Learn more about the project by visiting our website.

The Routes to Roots Networks & Beyond1

Our first online meeting of ‘The Routes to Roots Networks and Beyond’, that took place on February 11th, was hosting two artists who’s works are related to a long-term, interdyscyplinary projects in art&science: ‘Rhizosphere: The Big Network of Small Worlds’ - ‘PapiLLa’ by Joanna Hoffmann and Andre Bartzetzki and ‘Rhizome’ by Katarzyna Taborowska-Kaszuba. Artists presented each of their works accordingly, explaining the connections between projects and presenting the inspirations from the biological properties of the rhizosphere into multimedia, immersive artworks. Discussion was followed by a short Q&A in which creators of ‘PapiLLa’ answered the question about current world of growing isolation and how their artwork can be seen as corresponsive to this idea.
