How to develop and maintain a friendship when living in different time zones? How to create a shared space while working in different countries across the world? ONE ROOM, TWO DOORS!!! A collaborative project by artists Dahn Gim @gimda_ and Lisa Myeong-Joo @lisamyeongjookeighery

ONE ROOM, TWO DOORS is a space with exactly that, except it exists online, and with doors opening to timezones over 12 hours apart. For two months, Dahn Gim and Lisa Myeong-Joo are moving in and filling the room with ‘things’ from their daily life. Sometimes messy, sometimes clean but never planned, the work as open as the lives that fill it. Only viewable when the artists are awake, enter when you can. https://1room2doors.x-temporary.org

Online NOW! Article17 is an online audio poem based on Michaela Lakova's ongoing research into the Right to erasure formally known as the Right to be forgotten – a legislation allowing individuals to request search engines to delist their personal data.
Lakova uses the official legislation of Article 17, part of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) accepted in May 2018. GDPR introduces a new set of rules and regulations which aim to control how private companies collect, store, and use personal data.
However this legislation remains difficult to comprehend outside of the world of law enforcement. With Article17, developed during her residency at x-temporary.org, Lakova is interested in ‘translating’ this rather complex text and set of definitions which will ultimately enable the viewer to experience a new form of ‘uneasy’ reading. Evoking, over-sized text where words are passing sometimes too quickly, lure the visitor to constantly pay attention to the screen. http://article17.x-temporary.org/?2

The new x-temporary resident artist Javier Lloret started his project “Prosperity as you’ve never seen“ today.
A propaganda video was produced by the US National Security Council for the Singapore Summit that took place on June 12. This video emulates a Hollywood-style movie trailer, starring Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, and it was produced with the intention of persuading the North Korean leader.
Throughout the development of “Prosperity as you’ve never seen“ Lloret will deconstruct this propaganda video made out of numerous stock footage clips, by isolating and analysing these video clips that construct the narrative. One of the recurrent elements present in the video is a vision of prosperity, from a techno-optimistic western perspective. Each day of this one-month residency, Lloret will select a video, analyse it and share his findings on x-temporary.org

“A people or class which is cut off from its own past is far less free to choose or to act as a people or class than one that has been able to situate itself in history.”
(Berger, 1975)
Working forwards from this statement, we want to approach the question of representing the past and present as being inherently social in its nature. We are interested in the ways in which artistic inquiry can act as a catalyst for rediscovering new ways of reading the past and the present - through creating real or false representations, by transforming and re-interpreting the phenomenon of storytelling.

“W. Benjamin has argued that works of art lose their aura through constant reproduction and humans are left surrounded by a world that merely consists of ever emerging one-dimensional representations. In this context we want to discuss the relationship between memory and visual remembrance, looking at the back-and-forth relationship between representations and the functions of the human perceptual apparatus in today’s world.“ Julija Rukanskaite and Emily Dundas Oke in conversation with: Nechama Sarah Winston, Christian Sawalski, Rachel Gruijters, Juandel Gado, Gabi Nedzinskait

“An archive is a non-random collection of things, or the place where such a collection resides. The concept of non-randomness or purposelessness implies that archivists have a reason for archiving—that an archive is a meaningful project with a set of goals. It is possible to generate an archive by accident, so long as some party in the future can attribute meaning to this accidental collection of things.”
- James t. Hong, The Suspicious Archive

new resident artists: Julija Rukanskaite and Emily Dundas Oke practice examines potentials of improvisation in predetermined narratives through references to established ways of communication. Their interest focusses on virtual networks as ecologies – proposed as alternatives to fictitious one-dimensional stories.

During their residency with x-temporary.org Julija Rukanskaite and Emily Dundas Oke will continue working on their project “Artist as a Digital Archivist“. It explores the notion of narrative construction based on the model of digital archiving with themes ranging from time and memory to the politics of public narratives.

With works and contributions by: Derek Coté, Joy Meyer, Liam O'Connor, and Nechama Sarah Winston, a.o.

Dancing with the Screen: What Choreography Can Teach UX Designers | | Eye on Design

Read more about Joana Chicau’s “choreographic thinking”—composition, space, and timing through the lens of the body’s movement, interpreting software and dance as languages.

On a projected screen in a darkened room, strange glitches rocket across a browser. The interface is reacting to live coding by graphic designer and performer Joana Chicau, who types into her computer just in front of the screen. She begins to dance, her body moving with the distortions taking place...

Every two months, a curator or writer is invited to share his or her in-progress research in the form of a blog: reflections on, assessments of, and reactions to a specific subject. The online residency is an extension of how the editorial team wishes to reflect upon current practices of reading, researching, publishing and curating that have been enabled by the internet and its social technologies, all the while exploring new formats and advocating the open circulation of knowledge. http://www.manifestajournal.org/online-residencies

In the Theatre of Re_Sources you are welcome to enter and explore the main stage and the backstage.

#Backstage

A landscape of scores or a “scorescape” for the performance piece “Edit Distances”, written in web programming languages, such as JavaScript, inter-weaved with choreographic thought and imagination.

#Main Stage

A recording of the performance “Edit Distances”, a live coding piece enacted in a special webstage: @maps/space/moon/ (outsourced).

In computation linguistics “Edit distance” is a string metric operation, the edit distance between two words is “the minimum number of single-character edits (insertions, deletions or substitutions) required to change one word into the other.” [more information at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edit_distance]. This piece explores the distance between words and its meaning, the space and the text, objects and functions, language, technique and imagination ... [see full score: on the backstage].
