Thank you, Dante! After so many years, Dante Cosenza from Buenos Aires sent a photo of Monika Fleischmann that he had taken for the newspaper in 1997 during an interview. Monika had given a lecture about their artistic work, also pointing out the dangers that the Internet brings and that there must be rules that are respected in cyberspace. The real danger was not really taken seriously by politicians until about 20 years later - at least in Germany.
Wolfgang Strauss and Monika Fleischmann are currently working on their archive. So if there are any more photos that someone has taken in the last 35 years of them or their work in media art, please send them to: [email protected]

Disappearing Architecture - From Real to Virtual to Quantum
Editor: Georg Flachbart and Peter Weibel (Eds.), Birkhäuser, Basel, Year 2005
In this volume, based on the principle of shared research interests with internationally renowned scientific institutions, research labs and architectural studios, the editors propose a new kind of architecture – heterarchitecture –, conceived as a quantum object in which real space (1, OFF-line) and virtual space (0, ON-line) are literally superimposed, thus obeying the rules of quantum mechanics (1 and 0, OFF and ON at once) rather than classical physics. It is an architecture against architecture – at least of the traditional kind, which recognizes only either-or; either 1 or 0, either inside or outside, either enclosing or excluding. It is an invisible architecture that makes numerous parallel virtual worlds visible. It is an upside-down architecture: architecture as a pure infrastructure. Welcome to the Multiverse!

Architecture has always been a multi-layered discipline playing a catalytic role within society: architecture as representation. Recent developments in next generation computing of the beyond-the-desktop-era (autonomic, grid, ubiquitous and quantum computing) are, however, set to challenge this role...

PERFORMING DATA. MONIKA FLEISCHMANN & WOLFGANG STRAUSS
"Catalogue of an exhibition jointly produced by the National Centre for Culture and the Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art as part of the project "Art&Science Meeting". The exhibition, which was shown at Laznia from 15 April to 26 June 2011, was a retrospective of Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss. The artists are pioneers of interactive media art. Since the beginning of their artistic and scientific careers, they have used the computer as a means and medium. At the centre of their experimental work are the concepts of interactivity in art and science and the web as an interface. In addition to texts by Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss, the catalogue contains contributions by Ryszard W. Kluszczyński, Derrick de Kerckhove and Luca Farulli."
Curated by Ryszard W. Kluszczyński and thanks to Jadwiga Charzynska, Director of the Laznia Centre for Contemprary Art Gdansk, it was a particularly enjoyable exhibition.
Publisher: National Centre for Culture, Warsaw 2011 In cooperation with the Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art.

"Semantic Map" by Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss, 2001
Semantic mapping is a visual method for unlocking information and expanding knowledge. The Self-Organising Map (Kohonen 2001) uses semantic text analysis to uncover content connections between texts, identify similarities and summarise them in clusters. The visual tool is based on a method for visualising and analysing information in the digital archive, which is based on a self-learning artificial neural network. The neural network is trained by humans to generate the self-organizing map, which constantly edits itself as a living archive.
With the "semantic map", the database archive is transformed from a static knowledge storage into an "intelligent" and navigable knowledge network. It seems as if the data know about each other, recalling Marvin Minsky's vision of talking books: "Can you imagine that there used to be libraries where the books didn't talk to each other?"
It was presented in:

So, now we have another teapot! Happy about this award from the SIGGRAPH Academy 2018, which has arrived after some time has passed. I am honored and will place it next to the Golden Nica from Ars Electronica 1992 so that Wolfgang Strauss is also mentioned.
https://www.siggraph.org/about/awards/2018-art-award-monika-fleischmann/
This so-called Utah teapot belongs to the oldest and most famous 3D models of computer graphics. It is a simple surface model of a teapot where the inner cavity is not visible. Martin Newell developed it in 1975 as part of his computer graphics research at the University of Utah. Since then it has achieved a cult status beyond the scene as the "Utah Teapot". It has already been seen in animation classics such as "Toy Story" and the "Simpsons".

Since 2018 the teapot is the prize for being awarded and accepted as a member of the newly founded ACM SIGGRAPH Academy.
The teapot was manufactured in the German Friesland porcelain factory in Varel. In fact, the teapot has been produced in the Friesland Porzellanfabrik since 1954 and has not changed until today. At that time, today's classic teapot was still sold under the "Melitta" brand, to whose group the porcelain factory belonged until the early 1980s. Until recently, nobody in Friesland knew that the jug was such a well-known object.

In 1989 we at ART+COM flew through the teapot inside with VR technology. It wasn't that easy and not all of our members did it well or even tried it at that time 🙃 This new 3D version can actually be used in case someone wants to stop by for a cup of tea!

Our Story

PERFORMING DATA

MONIKA FLEISCHMANN & WOLFGANG STRAUSS “Our artistic research reflects an increasingly digitalized world of real and virtual presence. We invent emotional objects, allow data and the audience to perform in interactive stagings. Performing Data - as we call our media art - means experiencing the world as a metaphor. We visualize the present with mixed reality models. Participants become data performers and performance becomes the driving force for new knowledge. A space of thinking is created - a new kind of Denkraum. It's about reflecting on data and its impact on our existence.”

Research Artists Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss describe their work on Information Visualization and Evocative Interfaces as Aesthetic Spaces of Experience or Knowledge Art [Wissenskunst]: How Knowledge evokes through interactive environments. Their artistic research is based on two areas: to study bodily perception in interactive environments (Liquid Views); and to experiment how knowledge can be unfolded with digital media (Media Flow). Fleischmann & Strauss have a long career in the creation of artistic research institutions. In 1987 they founded ART+COM in Berlin, the first German Research Laboratory for Art and Interactive Technology, in 1996 the MARS Exploratory Media Lab at GMD, the German National Research Institute for Information Technology in Bonn and in 2005 the eCulture Factory at Fraunhofer Research Society in Bremen. Their transdisciplinary research and development team of up to 50 artists and scientists from allover the world realized ahead of its time interfaces and applications. They built up netzspannung.org, one of the first media art archives and knowledge platforms based on semantic structuring of information (netzspannung.org/about). Netzspannung.org connects structure and content of the archive with innovative interfaces : The archive speaks (Media Flow). They are patent holders of novel interaction techniques for gesture based interaction (inspired by the theremin) and published more than 100 scientific or artistic articles. Many of their works has been awarded (Golden Nica of Ars Electronica) and exhibited worldwide over the last 26 years. The creation of knowledge within a networked information space - one of todays most important topics - was visualized with Energie-Passagen and performed in public space. Semantic Map and PointScreen were rated as groundbreaking products of the 21 century. Since 2010, most works of Fleischmann & Strauss are part of the collection of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany: Intersections of architecture and performance art that create participatory environments: YOU become a data performer. Their artistic research is documented on netzspannung.org (video) and was supported by EU, German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and partners such as Burda Akademie (Iconic Turn, pdf), DAAD, Goethe Institute, IFA.
