VIRTUALITIES AND REALITIES New Experiences, Art and Ecologies in Immersive Environments. Vol No: 17. 2019
Immersive technologies, coupled with superior virtual environments, artificial intelligence algorithms, faster processors, and biometrics, are launching a new era in virtual experiences, entertainment, and interactive storytelling. At the same time, these technologies have the potential for invasive monitoring and control.
What are the present and future artistic strategies that deal with this? Combined with the acceleration of VR/AR and technologies of immersion, how will societies react?
The first chapter of this book ‘re-approaches immersion’ by looking at artistic practices in VR environments, non-linear storytelling in 360-degree video, and brain sensor interfaces used in films and performances.
The second chapter, on ‘technologies of the ecological’, discusses the role of arts in tackling climate change and creating augmentable experiences by combiningdigital with biological. The third chapter, ‘beyond interactivity’, shapes new theories for post-digital practices, while the fourth chapter addresses new economies of virtual experiences and questions artistic values.
The volume also features a review of the exhibition – Virtualities and Realities (Riga, 2017), presenting cutting-edge artworks that explore complex relations between the ‘virtual’ and ‘real’ in our post-media society, thereby creating new immersive experiences.

Distinguished Artist Award

Nomination for the SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award until the end of January 2022!
Wolfgang Strauss would be an option because Monika Fleischmann was awarded alone in 2018. A strange rule to give an award to only one of the artists on a team!
Wolfgang and Monika are partners in all their artistic concepts and Wolfgang is the inventor of the interactive table in Berlin, Cyber City, the touch screen in Liquid Views, the Responsive Workbench setting, the Virtual Balance in Skywriter, etc. Of course, many others would have to be awarded as well, but Wolfgang would be a good choice.
The Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Digital Art is presented annually to an artist who has created a substantial and important body of work that significantly advances aesthetic content in the field of digital art.

"The Billion Dollar Code" (Netflix serie)
A view of the ART+COM story about Terravision and Google Earth that is not entirely correct, but important. Some innovative digital German developments of that time 30 years ago had a similarly bitter fate. What was the reason for the failure and is it still there? Naivety of the authors, narrow-mindedness of the environment, wrong partners, stupidity of the financiers, limited market, lack of foresight of the investors, ignorant politicians!? Universities and research institutes finally have to teach the placement and marketing of products or create appropriate structures. https://www.heise.de/select/tr/2022/1/2130913081467289878

The Billion Dollar Code (Netflix Serie)

"How the idea for Google Earth was born in Berlin"
No wonder there is no European Google! And what a miracle that the Berlin Tagesspiegel, a Netflix serie (The Billion Dollar Code) and other media after decades report on a digital invention from Germany - poorly researched unfortunately. Edouard Bannwart is not mentioned and what does Uli Weinberg say about it?
Wolfgang Strauss and Monika Fleischmann had similar touching experiences when they - after their Art+Com story - tried to bring innovative digital inventions into the world (RW, PS). Even the Golden Nica for their - the world's first - VR work "Home of the Brain" from 1992 was not worth a single line to any German newspaper. Instead, American computer graphics were reported. Hardly anyone in DE / EU takes any notice of the SIGGRAPH award for life's work in digital art and admission to the Academy. How about German/European media finally turning their attention to the digital pioneers in their home countries and doing good research!?

Our Story

PERFORMING DATA

MONIKA FLEISCHMANN & WOLFGANG STRAUSS “Our artistic research reflects an increasingly digitalized world of real and virtual presence. We invent emotional objects, allow data and the audience to perform in interactive stagings. Performing Data - as we call our media art - means experiencing the world as a metaphor. We visualize the present with mixed reality models. Participants become data performers and performance becomes the driving force for new knowledge. A space of thinking is created - a new kind of Denkraum. It's about reflecting on data and its impact on our existence.”

Research Artists Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss describe their work on Information Visualization and Evocative Interfaces as Aesthetic Spaces of Experience or Knowledge Art [Wissenskunst]: How Knowledge evokes through interactive environments. Their artistic research is based on two areas: to study bodily perception in interactive environments (Liquid Views); and to experiment how knowledge can be unfolded with digital media (Media Flow). Fleischmann & Strauss have a long career in the creation of artistic research institutions. In 1987 they founded ART+COM in Berlin, the first German Research Laboratory for Art and Interactive Technology, in 1996 the MARS Exploratory Media Lab at GMD, the German National Research Institute for Information Technology in Bonn and in 2005 the eCulture Factory at Fraunhofer Research Society in Bremen. Their transdisciplinary research and development team of up to 50 artists and scientists from allover the world realized ahead of its time interfaces and applications. They built up netzspannung.org, one of the first media art archives and knowledge platforms based on semantic structuring of information (netzspannung.org/about). Netzspannung.org connects structure and content of the archive with innovative interfaces : The archive speaks (Media Flow). They are patent holders of novel interaction techniques for gesture based interaction (inspired by the theremin) and published more than 100 scientific or artistic articles. Many of their works has been awarded (Golden Nica of Ars Electronica) and exhibited worldwide over the last 26 years. The creation of knowledge within a networked information space - one of todays most important topics - was visualized with Energie-Passagen and performed in public space. Semantic Map and PointScreen were rated as groundbreaking products of the 21 century. Since 2010, most works of Fleischmann & Strauss are part of the collection of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany: Intersections of architecture and performance art that create participatory environments: YOU become a data performer. Their artistic research is documented on netzspannung.org (video) and was supported by EU, German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and partners such as Burda Akademie (Iconic Turn, pdf), DAAD, Goethe Institute, IFA.
