We Talk To Artist-Musician Nahum About The Premiere Of Stories From Home

A couple of weeks ago I had a conversation with Sassy Hong Kong to unveil more details about Stories From Home. A one year long project in the making that uses satellite, AI and storytelling to listen to the narratives that Earth has to share with us. Slowly we will share more details about this monster project that I’ve been developing at the studio with Giulia Ottavia, Merlin Carter and Viktoria Dergunova.

Space Without Rockets - KOSMICA Institute

Every day I get closer to the realisation that the best thing that can happen to space exploration is to slow it down.

That's a difficult statement, and it comes after a decade of my involvement in the space sector. However, the trend we have seen in the last year with space tourism and commercialisation could put the climate crisis we face in our planetary home even more at risk.

Rockets are a beautiful thing, but we should keep an eye on their emissions. In this article by curator friend Rob La Frenais for , he explores the idea of Space Without Rockets. This title comes from the symposium we hosted in El Paso, Texas with - what if we could explore the cosmos with balloons and the Sun?

The Environmental Impact of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)

Let's speak straight: NFTs based on proof of work blockchains like Ethereum have a negative impact on the planet. It is appalling to see how many players in the art world have jumped into bandwagon without basic research or by putting at the forefront greed and personal interest over the planet.

In such a crucial time to redefine our relationship with Earth, it's heartbreaking to see the lack of ecological compassion in our art community. Sure, it has been announced (and delayed) the transition of Ethereum into proof of stake which will solve the energy consumption problem - but until this happens people interested in crypto and NFTs have the choice of using cleaner blockchains like Tezos.

Let's get our morals and principles right, we have the choice.

Beyond Aesthetics: Artists as Visionaries of Space Exploration | Hacker Noon

The last weekend was full of emotions and visions about our place in the cosmos. I am convinced that we need a thoughtful conversation of what we are actually bringing to other places beyond Earth. While the technologies that are being engineered in the space sector are exciting, the narratives around them are poor, simplistic and reenforce those attitudes that have brought suffering and destruction on Earth. Perhaps the best thing for space exploration is to slow down space exploration (?)

Here are some thoughts I recently shared with

https://hackernoon.com/beyond-aesthetics-artists-as-visionaries-of-space-exploration

Artists make space exploration more accessible to broader audiences and challenge old paradigms.

Liquid Cosmos - KOSMICA Institute

After months of work it’s finally happening: our exhibition at the Venice Biennale of Architecture within the Lithuanian Space Agency Pavilion!

Liquid Cosmos at the Lithuanian Space Agency
Dates: 19, 20 & 21 November 2021

In summer 2021, KOSMICA created a space laboratory with artists from the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG). In this laboratory they explored how artists have envisioned a myriad of models for exploring the universe in both critical and poetical ways. After a series of seminars and discussions with Nahum, they created a series of artworks to dialogue and expand on the projects presented at the pavilion, curated by Jan Boelen, artistic director of Atelier LUMA in France and rector of HfG.

The participating artists will present a selection of installations, interactive artworks and performances to create new imaginaries for the exploration of the cosmos and our relationship with it. This group of artists are stretching the possibilities of humans in space by envisioning cosmic portals, devising new extraterrestrial languages, queering our understanding of the universe and challenging our place in it.

Participating artists: Michael Bielicky, Éva Csonka, Juhee Han, Kimin Han, Anna-Lina Helsen, Iden Sungyoung Kim, Jungeun Lee, Christina Vinke, Alex Wenger

For the last week of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, the Lithuanian Space Agency’s (LSA) exhibition will present a group of artworks specially created to respond to the pavilion’s central project, Planet of People by Julijonas Urbonas, the LSA’s founde...

Sharing with you the result of 3 months of intense creation in our programme ‘I want to believe’ at the University of the Underground. Together we explored: How can we radically reframe our belief systems being political, economic and sociological- within and outside of institutions? Can/should religion and beliefs disappear? And ultimately how to be kind and open to other ways of understanding the world. Thank you for this journey and most of all to this incredible cohort:

For the last three months I have been in an incredible journey leading the programme I Want To Believe at the University of the Underground. Tomorrow this adventure will come to an end with the final show where our researchers will share what they have conjured up. Join the live stream here: https://youtu.be/6KFUfFrbnPY

'I WANT TO BELIEVE' FINAL SHOW
Thurs 22nd July 19.00 - 21.30 CET
It is with our greatest pleasure to invite you to the final show of the University of the Underground's 'I want to Believe' research programme. You can watch the show through this Youtube streaming link!

In this three-month programme, we called for an investigation into belief systems and religion. As a part of the practice-based residency, the students unravelled the relationships between religions and nation-states; and beliefs systems and economics; through a series of experiences, and creative interventions involving political theory and practice.

Together they will explore: How can we radically reframe our belief systems being political, economic and sociological- within and outside of institutions? Can/should religion and beliefs disappear?

In this final show you will see the works of researchers: Amirmohammad Azizi, Celeste Coury, Chloe Kelly, David Jonathan Romero, Francisco Mojica, G Chiarion, Irem Aydemir, Jamal Ageli, Jessica Stoya, Karen Martini, May Kineyetums, Rachel Bungey, Ruth Best & Tereza Červeňova

Over a decade ago, I embarked in a journey I could have never imagined: becoming part of the space exploration community. Since then, I work with astronauts, spacecraft designers, astrobiologists, and other incredible humans. I have floated in zero gravity, trained as a cosmonaut and launched art in rockets. Also, I could have not imagined where this journey would lead me to. Space took me to the most wonderful place we could be in: Earth.

The first instrument I ever learned was the bass. I wanted to understand the structure of something I couldn’t live without: music. Curiosity turned into a passion and later a vital need. I start my days with music. I end my days with music, and I exist in between.

‘I want to believe’ is calling for an investigation into religion and belief systems. As a part of this 3 month practice based residency, we are unravelling belief systems’ relationship with politics, economics, nation states and society; through a series of experiences, and creative interventions - made by yourself - and involving theory and practice.
Together we will explore the place of religion and belief systems in radical and critical ways within and outside institutions. We will question their role in today's greatest challenges and whether or not they have a relevant place in society.

When it comes to space activities are we learning from our mistakes on Earth, or simply transferring our culture of extraction to new territories?

As an academic and the first artist to launch an interactive artwork in outer space, Nahum is one of the few figures bringing controversial questions around colonisation, ownership and capitalism to the field of space science.

In 2018, he founded KOSMICA to explore the cultural impact of space exploration and what our attitude to the 'outside' can tell us about how we approach our most urgent problems here on Earth.
