DICE 2019: The Revolution Will Not Be Funded

The Revolution Will Not Be Funded organized by last year's DICE Conference + Festival is a talk about the positives and pitfalls of public funding with Lena Szirmay-Kalos (Montag Modus), Sky Deep (Reclaim the Beats Festival/ Reveller Records), Jana Braun (Bezirkskulturfonds Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg), and moderation by Lucy Alice Thomas (Give Something Back To Berlin).

Commercialising social projects often runs counter to the central political values of activist groups. The funding landscape purports to offer a third way, a path out of burnout and financial ruin, without needing to cater to brands or chase profit. However, it comes with its own set of difficulties and barriers to success. Named after the must-read book by INCITE!, this panel focuses on how to navigate fundraising for grassroots projects, with insight from Berlin-based project managers and funders.

Listen now on SoundCloud, or it's also available on Spotify, Apple, or wherever you like to get your podcasts:

Earlier this year, Macromedia University approached MMpraxis with an invitation to take on a special role in one of their practice based seminars on communication strategy: In the beginning of April, we were asked to introduce a group of students to Montag Modus and to explain the idea and the working structure behind a series dedicated to the live arts: How exactly do we collaborate with invited artists? What are the ways in which we engage with our audience? Can we expand the possibilities of recording and documenting time-based media and ephemeral arts?

Over the course of the past months, in the form of online university sessions, the master students of macromedia university analyzed our communication methodology and conducted in-depth interviews with our staff and with some artists from past editions of Montag Modus. By taking a peek behind the curtains of our organization, they gathered the necessary information to understand our aims and to develop a communication strategy package specifically tailored to the Montag Modus interdisciplinary series. We would like to extend our gratitude to these students for sharing with us valuable information on how to better facilitate access to and knowledge about the live arts as well as for equipping us with better social media tools to share time-based media with the world - both during and post-show. Also, thanks to macromedia university for reaching out and allowing us the opportunity to go back to school and improve!

On our brand new website, you can find the final presentation of the M.A students.

Anybody from any geography can use this project as a healing site where alternative stories can be draw and told and where old hegemonic histories can be re-customized.
👉 Deadline 20 June 👈

Marcio Carvalho is an artist and a contemporary art curator whose projects are primarily focused on collective technologies and practices of remembering, and how they influence individual and group memory of past events.

OPEN CALL for dance-tech residency for Berlin based artists and collaborators!

OPEN CALL for dance-tech residency for Berlin based artists and collaborators!

OPEN CALL for dance-tech residency for Berlin based artists and collaborators:

Extended deadline until noon July 7th.

We invite dance makers and artists invested in the field of technology and performance to apply for this special residency hosted at Lake Studios Berlin from 05.10.2020 to 21.11.2020

- PERFORMANCE IN VIRTUAL SPACE -

'As a response to the global pandemic and civil unrest this year, we will invite an artist and a remote collaborator to explore and expand the notion of "remote performance" as it relates to dance. We recognize that creating for this virtual space has little in common with the established practices of live presence and performance in the physical realm. Because of this we are seeking collaborators ready to radically reconsider the form, structure, and dramaturgy of an online dance performance. In our view, everything is "up for grabs" – starting with the way in which you will conduct rehearsals/research and going all the way to how the online viewer will experience the final work. The proposal we choose this year will be selected because it demonstrates that the artist is ready to dig deep into the topic and offer an innovative vision of what an online dance performance could be.'

The residency includes:

A 3000€ stipend for the primary artist, a living space for the primary artist at Lake Studios, and a minimum of 25 hours of studio time per week divided between our 2 studios.

The residency is sponsored and taking place at Lake Studios Berlin with support from Troikatronix/Mark Coniglio & the Berlin Senat

The primary artist must be based in Berlin because the funding we received from the Berlin Senat requires this. The remote collaborator may be based anywhere in the world (including Berlin).

Please visit our website for more information and details on how to apply: www.lakestudiosberlin.

DEADLINE: changed to 7.7..2020 NOON!!

Lake Studios would like to thank TroikaTronix / Mark Coniglio and Berlin Senat for their support of this residency.

Here comes the second episode of the new podcast series DIS[ ]TANZ.
This time, dance writer Beatrix Joyce talks with Hungarian poet Márió Z. Nemes about his text “Digital Eschatology” in which he draws parallels between digitalization and religion and reimagines the body as a vaporous data cloud.
Márió wrote “Digital Eschatology” especially for Montag Modus Klimata's "Touch and Go" event. During the event, the audience received his text via e-mail.
We are happy to announce that our publication about Klimata is in the making and will be published soon on our new website. It will feature Márió's text, among others.

Dance writer Beatrix Joyce recently started a new podcast series DIS [ ] TANZ that deals with questions around what it means to move dance, and the body, online. Her first guest is performance scholar Martina Ruhsam who was part of last year's Montag Modus Klimata project. The starting point of their conversation on non-human entities in contemporary dance is a text titled Exercises in Reconfiguring #1 written by Martina, especially for the Montag Modus event. Almost a year ago, this work was installed in the foyer of the CHB - Collegium Hungaricum Berlin floating down the stairs.

The Art of Movement

Do you remember the performance and video installation Figuring Age by Boglarka Borcsok back in December at Montag Modus?

Boglárka has been working on a triptych in collaboration with filmmaker Andreas Bolm exploring the biopolitics of the aged female body. The first project in the series The Art of Movement is a documentary film portraying three elderly female dancers. The second work is the performance Figuring Age that was on view at Montag Modus. The last piece of the triptych Second Skin is intended for the theater.
Boglárka will share the full documentary film on Vimeo on Demand. Follow The Art of Movement page to learn more about the release date and the process behind the work.

The Art of Movement is now on Facebook. We are grateful to have received so many messages and requests in response to our trailer. This page is created to give more information and news about when and where you can see the film. Stay safe and close!

ISOLATION DISPATCHES: BERLIN | Bido Lito!

The pervasive nature of Covid-19 and the necessary measures put in place to protect citizens have had a huge impact on all areas of society across the globe. Bido Lito!'s Isolation Dispatches series asks creatives from various international cities to share how the circumstances have affected their livelihoods, creative outputs and community.
Lena Szirmay-Kalos talked about the status of the creative scene in Berlin.

Bido Lito! is a monthly magazine for and about Merseyside’s thriving creative community. We’re all about the here and now – the musicians, artists, makers and creative minds that make the region’s independent scene stronger than it’s ever been.

Montag Modus Klimata – What role can art play when climate change is altering the world around us?

Around this time last year, we were in the midst of Montag Modus Klimata. This year, however, because of the coronavirus, we are postponing our events until the current risk has subsided.
Even though we don’t know yet when we can continue, we wanted to share with you a short film we made about last year's project. The curatorial team, Jasna Layes Vinovrski, Dani Kovács and Lena Szirmay-Kalos talk about Montag Modus Klimata, while you can see glimpses of the various works presented during the year.

We would like to thank all the participating artists, contributors and helpers for the great performances and memorable moments we spent together last year!
Stay healthy and safe and hope to see you soon!💜
