KARMANOIA presents the artists of the Meta Maze:

Esther Valk 3/3

Nature itself is Esther’s biggest source of inspiration. For her feltwork, she observes plants, their shapes, their flowers and seeds – or even pictures from outer space.

Esther Valk's contribution to the Meta Maze at Doloris are large felt sculptures with organic shapes, reminiscent of gestalts you might find in plants or human bodies. Organic in their touch and appearance, the felt sculptures in the Meta Maze are the central elements of the ‘Cocoon’, a space that feels very nest-like and transformational. The wool was even partly coloured with flowers she picked.

Remembering the collaboration with Heidi Jonsson and Karmanoia, Esther recalls: "Through lots of fantastic ideas and energy, the project was constantly growing and developing!” Naturally.

Felting = Feeling!
Among the many artists participating in Karmanoia's Meta Maze at Doloris, Esther Valk contributed a very special artwork to our installation in Tilburg: Felted sculptures. We immediately fell in love with this special material.

After having graduated from Eindhoven Fashion and Industrial Design Academy, Esther discovered the technique of how woolen fibres can be turned into felt. Thus, her passion for a this particular handcraft was born. In the process of wet felting, wool is compressed with hot water under manual pressure. This creates a very sturdy and flexible material. Felting is physically hard work, but the results are always rewarding. It combines design, painting and sculpturing, as it smoothly merges colours into three dimensional objects that can be used for a wide range of purposes.

KARMANOIA presents the artists of the Meta Maze:

Esther Valk, 1/3

In the creation process of our Meta Maze, at Doloris in Tilburg, we have cooperated with many gifted artists. Grateful for their inspiring impact on the project, we gladly spread the word about their work.

Esther Valk is a designer and visual artist from Eindhoven. Ever since her childhood, she has been in love with working with textile. Wool and natural fibres are her favourite material, which she enjoys turning into felt. Oh, that touch! Created partly in her studio, partly on-site, Esther has contributed large felt sculptures to the Meta Maze.

She remembers: “Working in the Meta Maze was a great experience because it was so powerful to work with the dynamic artists of Karmanoia." Likewise!

“I spilled my beer and wiped it up with my towel – which froze shortly after.”

Tim Henrik Schneider, founder of Karmanoia and co-initiator of Peristal Singum remembers the winter of 2009/2010:

"That was the last real Berlin winter: a long period from December until March with frost, snow and sh*tty weather. Stupidly, that was the winter we chose to build the Peristal Singum. We had spent our summer living in trailers in the countryside – a beautiful thing to do for a free spirit … until the temperatures drop. So I called my old friend Toni from Wilde Renate – they had an apartment for us! We moved in without a clear vision of what we would be doing there, with this void creative space that later would become the Peristal Singum. We spent the fall designing and sketching out ideas. Georg had one room, I had another, and we shared a “kitchen” the size of 1.5 square meters. There was no heating. It was so cold that when we painted the walls of the white room, the paint left in the buckets would be frozen stiff by morning."

These were the conditions of the construction site. They made it through the winter, and the Peristal Singum opened on April 1st, 2010.

Peristal Singum: An unknown territory

Upon entering the Peristal Singum, you were required to relinquish your cell phone along with your certainty about your orientation in time and space. Oblique corridors, perplexing room dimensions, inconceivable aesthetic impressions – all of this caused visitors to lose track of their whereabouts. Many would not be able to say how long their journey was: 20 minutes? 3 hours? In this clip, some visitors share their experience of letting go.

How long did you stay?

The Peristal Singum was a step into the unknown.
In theory humans have the innate capacity to get along just fine without a clock or map – an idea hard to imagine in a world saturated with information and guidelines. Nowadays, we easily feel lost and alone when deprived of the devices that regulate our perception.

Imagine a late afternoon in your hometown. You are looking at a familiar surrounding: the city, its streets, traffic signs directing movement. Words of your mother tongue reach your ears as ordinary, conventional communication. Unconsciously, you have learned how to move and behave within these known frameworks and patterns. You dwell in a sense of security, relying on the certainty that you know exactly where you are in time and space.

Inside the Peristal Singum, however, one had to surrender this feeling of certainty along with their cell phone at the cloakroom. What followed was unknown territory. The spaces inside the surreal installation designed by Karmanoia were hardly comparable to common contexts of the outside world. For most people, a visit to the Peristal Singum meant giving in to total delirium and disorientation.

To relinquish control, and to allow oneself to fully experience a new and nonconforming environment wherein the unexpected waits, demands all one’s senses. This state of being lost triggers a primordial mechanism that initiates mental, physical and biological processes that we rarely experience when in our comfort zone. We are reawakened into consciousness.

Looking for a brain!
With too many ideas in our heads and never enough money in our pockets, we considered the Peristal Singum our experimental playground and a canvas for unconventional expression. One day, a guy appeared on the construction site and told us about his research into brain wave sensors. He had built a device that was able to read the frequencies of a person’s neural activity and translate it into visuals...

Genius, we thought, just what we have been looking for! We wanted his technology inside the maze. So, we integrated his device into a brain-shaped silicone apparatus (For the brain, we had to find a model first. Unfortunately, none of our friends had a spare one lying around nor wanted to give away theirs. We decided to use a sheep brain instead in order to cast the plaster mold).

Regrettably, the brain wave sensors were not able to cope with the visitors’ neuronal activity during their journey through the Peristal Singum – perhaps too much excitement to process? The sensors short-circuited and stopped working. And one day, someone stole the brain...

What did your brain waves look like in the maze? Let us know!

KARMANOIA presents the artists of the Meta Maze:

Robert Buschbacher, 3/3

Theater and puppetry are Robert Buschbacher's passion and mission. But when it turned out Karmanoia would go to Tilburg to build a new art maze, he did not think twice, took his bicycle and moved to the Netherlands to support the construction process of the Meta Maze with his artistic perspectives and skills.

Having followed this calling, Robert created the “Oktoboot”, a bubble-like space that feels both cosy and alienating as the walls consist of untanned hide – a material that he salvaged from abandoned leather factories in the region. With this very room, the artwork of Merlijn Van De Sande has found its perfect nest. Robert and Merlijn also worked together on a mechanical miniature inside the Meta Maze. Have you found it yet?

Robert Buschbacher, 2/3

Robert Buschbacher studied puppetry at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart. As such, he performs on stage regularly, but today explores the more peripheral areas of classic puppetry. He draws inspiration from old and broken objects and loves to work with unconventional material from natural sources, such as skin, wool or dough. For instance, his solo performance “Timestrudel” deals with dementia and the fugacity of life, brilliantly depicted by the help of a single chunk of cake dough. Or, when touring with the performance crew “Marana”, he dances in fluorescent wool-knit costumes.

KARMANOIA presents the artists of the Meta Maze:

Robert Buschbacher, 1/3

Robert Buschbacher is a puppeteer and material researcher. Through building puppets, masks and mechanical objects, he creates out-of-the-ordinary characters for stage and other theatrical contexts. Having worked for many years with handicapped people, Robert has developed a special interest for simple but effective visual communication. In the Meta Maze, too, he set out to explore the possibilities of conveying meaning across high communication barriers.

As a long-time member of Karmanoia, he not only implemented his own artwork into the maze, but also helped to ensure that the concept and dramaturgy of the installation were coherent.

Who did you meet at the Peristal Singum?
As much energy as had been put into the creation of the Peristal Singum just as much was also created in its aura by the presence of the visitors. The bar and waiting area not rarely became a scene of artistic and unconventional get-togethers and the maze itself turned into a sort of inspirational catalyst for people who wanted to experience something out of the ordinary. This was where you would take your art-loving friends visiting Berlin, sparing them the walk through yet another museum. This was where inspiration seekers found their moment of awe and curiosity, a little dream, a flashing travel.

Do you recall an encounter at the Peristal Singum worth remembering?

Peristal Singum: Fear and potential

“Courage is coming as you are going forward...”
Visitors remember their visit at the Peristal Singum.

The Peristal Singum evoked fear in some people. How come?
We rarely dive into completely unknown situations – we as humans have become increasingly habituated to staying well within the confines of our comfort zone. As such, being put into an indescribable, disorienting space like the Peristal Singum meant facing fear for some visitors. Here’s what some of them say about this feeling and its impact!

Did you think the Peristal Singum was scary?

It wasn’t unusual for visitors of Karmanoia's art maze Peristal Singum to encounter the feeling of fear. However, unlike a haunted house, the Peristal Singum was not conceived nor built to elicit fear; rather, it embraced fear as one among many possible emotions it could evoke.

But what was so scary about the Peristal Singum?
The design and layout of the installation were not straightforward, therefore the interpretation and navigation were left up to the visitor. It’s only natural for humans in such an undefined space, without a user’s manual or any wayfinding signage, to anchor themselves in what they bring along. The Peristal Singum, therefore, functioned as a mirror of each individual’s inner disposition.

So, each person would experience the Peristal Singum differently – their own personal narratives reverberating at unique frequencies with the installation. Those that came with fear might find fear. Those that came with joy might experience joy. Those that came with a mindset of creativity and wonder might find inspiration.

The experience was indeed cathartic for those who, despite all discomfort, faced their fear and went further into the weird wonders and labyrinthine spaces. For this, they were rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of courage – in fact, people often thanked us for having provided them this shock treatment. Those who didn’t dare continue and emerged frightened were taken into our arms and comforted. After all, the Peristal Singum was built with love.

What was your experience? Let us know!
