"The experience at Forecast solidified my deep belief in the importance of nonhierarchical, peer-to-peer support. As much as Forecast is structured as a mentorship platform, a lot of the conversations that you have with your peers—people working in other disciplines—are things that you really take away from that experience as well."

For the latest in our series Revisit, in which we check in with Forecast alumni, we caught up with Bangkok-based curator Abhijan Toto, who participated in Forecast 3, in 2018. He then went on to co-found The Forest Curriculum, a collaborative curatorial practice, co-learning platform, and an art practice. They will be showing work in the forthcoming exhibition Nation, Narration, Narcosis at the Hamburger Bahnhof museum, Berlin.

As an initiator of Driving the Human, we are excited for '21 visions for Eco-social renewal' happening this week. More info below:

Driving the Human: 21 visions for Eco-social renewal
October 15 – 17, 2021
radialsystem, Berlin, and online

From October 15 – 17, 2021, Driving the Human presents 21 concepts proposing new visions for sustainable cohabitation on our planet. Ranging from a variety of geographic and cultural backgrounds, these visions suggest innovative and prescient ways to deal with some of the most pressing questions of our present moment. Among others, they engage with entanglements between technology and nature, artificial intelligence, circular economy, new modes of production, indigenous knowledge and approaches, and more-than-human perspectives from the bacterial to the interplanetary. Overall, they reinforce perspectives where collaboration and interdependency become essential, determining factors for life and survival on our planet.

The full programme will be announced soon.

Don’t forget to subscribe to our Newsletter to be informed about the latest updates and join our Telegram group now to engage with us!

Isman Jesmi is the mentee of #Forecast6 chosen by artist Emeka Ogboh.

Ogboh says, “Each of the three projects I mentored delve into transformative experiences of conflicts, and explore their traces in the body’s deep-tissue level, through the senses. I have selected Iman Jesmi, whose work Sensory Souvenir explores the impact of immigration on cities and how migrants must adapt to their new surroundings, to continue as my Forecast mentee.

"His project provides the possibility of engaging with the multiplicities of sensorial faculties, and has the potential to continue evolving organically in its exploration of migration and immigrant experiences across the world. Migration continues to be part and parcel of humanity, with political, economic, and social conditions constantly changing and creating new migratory scenarios. The core aspect of Jesmi’s Sensory Souvenir involves engaging with the urban space as a place of cross-cultural interactions and encounters, and this approach provides rich and diverse anthropological findings on human behavior.”

Simona Deaconescu is the mentee of #Forecast6 chosen by dancer and choreographer Compagnie Mathilde Monnier.

Monnier will accompany Romanian artist and choreographer Deaconescu in her research into the links between dance and epidemics in the work Ramanenjana.

“Dance is a medium for understanding how we can live together,” Monnier says. “We are at a moment in history when the body has become a central focus in our lives. Simona has undertaken a journey in time and space to draw on a history that, albeit not her own, has invaded our lives over the past two years. It is based on events that took place in nineteenth-century Madagascar, where European observers reported massive group dances that spread like an epidemic. Through her research into archival material, but also through the links she has forged with Malagasy choreographer Gaby Saranouffi, Simona questions the reception of those rituals of passage and of healing, and seeks to recontextualize them.”

Özge Samancı is the mentee of #Forecast6 chosen by cartoonist Ulli Lust.

Lust is mentoring Samancı, whose graphic novel Evil Eye is slated for publication in 2023 by Uncivilized Books.

Lust says, “It has been a great pleasure to be able to work with the three artists over the past months. Each is a passionate and gifted storyteller and I will continue to follow their projects. I will accompany Özge in the final refinement of her work Evil Eye. Set in contemporary Istanbul against the backdrop of upcoming elections, the story captivates the reader with vivid descriptions and the author’s precise power of observation. It is less about political and more about socio-political challenges, especially those faced by young women in a classically patriarchal culture, which Özge describes with deadpan humor. A mysterious murder case, which two math students become key witnesses in, drives the plot forward.“

Flora Détraz - PLI is the mentee of #Forecast6 chosen by Sofia Jernberg - singer, composer.

Jernberg will accompany dancer and choreographer Détraz with the performative work C-R-I, in which Détraz incorporates vocal improvisation, centered around the act of screaming, into a live solo performance.

Jernberg says, “Because of her ability to invent and master a vocal language she set out to explore, weaving it together with a distinct choreographic practice to create a work that is truly unique to her, I have chosen to further the mentorship process with Flora Détraz.”

Jaya Klara Brekke is the mentee of #Forecast6 chosen by digital policy expert Francesca Bria.

“In the post-pandemic phase, we have a historic opportunity to lay the foundations for a renewal of our societies, projecting us into a digital, sustainable, and carbon-neutral future. Today this means, above all, addressing our twin challenges of the climate crisis and the need to reconquer our digital sovereignty and democratize the digital transition,” says Bria.

“All the nominees I selected are rethinking our common digital space by raising awareness, developing new narratives, and experimenting with alternative solidarity-based infrastructures for collective action. In particular, the work of Jaya Klara Brekke presents an incredible potential, since it opens up new interfaces for the perception of our post-human condition. Her Dashboards for Posthuman Life stimulates a new type of imagination, sensitivity, and intelligence, making us understand how one‘s actions and data affect other humans and nonhumans facing the crisis of the Anthropocene.“

Luísa Sol is the mentee of #Forecast6 chosen by architect Tatiana Bilbao.

Bilbao will accompany Sol on her project Architectures of Inclusion and Exclusion, which catalogues images of homes in the media to understand the relationship between the built environment, aspirational projections, and who gets to participate in creating the onscreen notions of home we are exposed to.

Bilbao says, “The project problematizes the mediatized notions of ‘home,’ and highlights the role of media in the construction of our built environment. Luísa’s project aims to understand how these notions have not only created grave discriminations but have also been the tool with which to perpetuate them. By creating a physical representation of the archetypical (Western) idea of a home and projecting on it a barrage of images culled from screens, Luísa invites viewers to consider this collective construct and its omissions.”

Mentorships for Audacious Minds

Forecast’s Fifth Edition Kicks Off with New Format

The six international mentors have selected 18 projects to accompany in Forecast’s fifth edition. Out of nearly 500 applications from 98 countries, the six distinguished mentors for the fifth edition of Forecast—chef Manu Buffara (Brazil), curator Koyo Kouoh (Cameroon), writer and researcher Evgeny Morozov (Belarus), visual artist and theater director Markus Öhrn (Sweden), musician Du Yun (China), and photographer and filmmaker Tobias Zielony (Germany)—have each selected three proposals.

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Forecast has updated its format to decentralize its resources and enable an extended mentoring period for all 18 nominees. All nominated projects will benefit from mentoring through the end of October. This updated format is regarded not merely as a substitute to the originally planned Forecast Forum in Berlin—which had to be called off due to the coronavirus—but as an alternative form of exchange and support.

The selection process is two-tiered. The mentors will remotely accompany the projects and choose one mentee each on November 1. Those six mentees’ projects will be further accompanied to completion, and presented at the Forecast Festival in April 2021 in Berlin.

🌍➡️ How do we go forward from here? The complex challenges of humanity's future often seem overwhelming. This is why the project Driving the Human integrates ideas from technology to biology, economy and the arts to find solutions for sustainable cohabitation on our planet. This weekend (Oct 15–17), the 21 concepts selected as candidates for the final 7 protoypes of the project will first be revealed in a three-day festival at radialsystem Berlin, which will also be streamed online! We are so excited to show them to you, along with an inspiring surrounding program of performances, workshops, video screenings and conversations! 💫 Join us on site in Berlin 👉 https://drivingthehuman.com/berlin-2021/ or through our livestream 👉 https://zkm.de/livestream or here 👉 https://drivingthehuman.com/ See the full program here 👉 https://drivingthehuman.com/program-berlin-2021/ with #acatech HfG Karlsruhe Forecast . . . #drivingthehuman #ecosocialrenewal #sustainablefutures #transdisciplinary #art #design #science #collaboration #sustainability #technology 📷 © Do AIs Dream of Climate Chaos – by Iris Qu 曲晓宇 © Down to the Economy – by Vienne Chan and Katja Meier © The Rooted Sea / Halophytic Futures – by Sonia Mehra Chawla, Miriam Walsh (ASCUS Art & Science), Brendan Mc Carthy and Sam Healy (Ray Interactive)
ARTIST NOMINATION Artist Awuor Onyango (@art.awuor ) is nominated in the category Sensing the World on Forecast , mentored by Emeka Ogboh, with a project that explores how much of Kenya’s history can be uncovered through a mother’s personal history of scents. Odors often offer a communal remembering that’s richer and more complex than the histories established by Western archiving formats. Since olfactory memory cannot be erased through the violence and theft of colonialism, Woman (of) Substance proposes an exploration of the olfactory memories of motherhood, womanhood, nationhood, and the ruptures in traditional knowledge formed in the postcolony. What can the scents and textures of one woman’s life tell us about an entire nation? And how do we re-engage the senses in the process of recording and archiving memory? Tune in to watch the work on the livestreamed #ForecastForum from September 9–11, 6pm daily on forecast-platform.com ------- The digital Forecast Forum will feature eighteen nominees, handpicked by the mentors, who will share their projects with the public for the first time during three days of live performances, music, and films livestreamed online from their locations around the world.
