Check out our latest release: "Seven Questions", edited by Jan De Vylder, Annamaria Prandi / Studio Jan de Vylder.

The publication is the outcome of a series of online lunch lectures at ETH Zürich, organized by studio Jan de Vylder during the Corona lockdown. The briefing for the speakers was as simple as it was tricky: Talk about seven questions that you consider relevant without answering them. The results were as diverse as the contributors: 70 experts from architecture, design, history, theory, sociology, art, etc. gave an insight in the creative processes that drive their work.

With contributions by Tom Avermaete, Tatiana Bilbao, Petra Blaisse, Philippe Block, Lilitt Bollinger, Roger Boltshauser, Emanuel Christ, Irina Davidovici, Fredi Fischli, Joseph Grima, Nikolaus Hirsch, Bijoy Jain, Momoyo Kaijima, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes, Elli Mosayebi, Freek Persyn, Eva Prats, Alice Rawsthorn, Marianna Rentzou, Philip Ursprung, Christophe Van Gerrewey, Inge Vinck, Lori Waxman, and many more.

"Everyday Matters", edited by Vanessa Grossman and Ciro Miguel. Photos by Ciro Miguel. Design by Something Fantastic.

Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley write in their foreword: "That which literally happens every day is so ever present, ever repeated, that it paradoxically goes unnoticed. The everyday is in this sense environmental, like water to fish––which is precisely what makes it so crucial to architects but also what torments them."

Featuring contributions by architectural designers, historians, and theoreticians, as well as scholars in fields such as cultural geography, environmental anthropology, political philosophy, and sociology, this book chronicles how the everyday has influenced contemporary approaches to architecture and urbanism, triggering the rise of a new ethics and aesthetics.

Contributions by Caitlin DeSilvey, Geisa Garibaldi (Concreto Rosa), Vanessa Grossman, Anna Heringer, Andrés Jaque (Office for Political Innovation), GuillermoLopez and Anna Puigjaner (MAIO), Charlotte Malterre Barthes, Markus Miessen (Studio Miessen), Ciro Miguel, Mouraria 53, DjamiaRibeiro, Renzo Taddei, Ilze Wolff and Heinrich Wolff (Wolff Architects)

You can order the book in our Ruby Press webshop (http://ruby-press.com/shop/everyday-matters-contemporary-approaches-to-architecture/) and soon at your local book store.

Never Demolish -

"Never Demolish", curated by Ilka Ruby and Andreas Ruby at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion. Nov 26th – Dec 16th.

The exhibition on the transformation of 530 apartments in Cité du Gand Parc Bordeaux by Lacaton & Vassal, Frédéric Druot, and Christophe Hutin transforms the Barcelona Pavilion into a domestic space.

In a 1:1 installation the visitor can experience the effect of the extension of the living spaces through the addition of wintergardens in Cité du Grand Parc. Between Mies' famous Onyx wall and the glass facade of the Pavilion an almost 10-meter-long wall takes on the role of the sliding glass façade of the project in Bordeaux. The wall is printed with large photos that simulate from one side the view from the winter garden into the living room and from the other side the view from the living room into the wintergardens. The thermal and sunscreen curtains used in the project are also used in the installation. In addition, the room is equipped with furnitures and plants to give the impression of the domestic atmosphere. A film about the project provide visitors with important background information.

NEW RELEASE: 2nd issue of the "Chapters" series
Design in Dialogue. 51N4E, endeavour, Denkstatt. Edited by Newrope ETH Zurich.

How can design processes be shaped through dialogue to give different actors the opportunity to add, remove or change something in an attempt to exceed the expectations of everyone involved?
The first part of the book investigates the work of Brussels-based architecture firm 51N4E and two design-focused consulting firms, endeavour from Antwerp and Denkstatt from Basel. All three companies explore the boundaries of architecture, advocating openness and dialogue with clients.
A second part of the publication examines the hidden presence of this “design in dialogue” approach in a wide range of European architecture firms and their projects—not as a new methodology to study, but as a liberating attitude to share, cherish, and develop.
With contributions by Harder Haas, Atelier Bow-Wow, Lacol, Studio Paola Viganò, Equip 10+1, Onkruid, Caruso St John Architects, and Communitism.

Nice review of "Berlin Maps" by Sebastian Felix Ernst, Jonas Tratz and FAKT office in baunetzwoche no. 580. Stephan Becker writes: „Berlin Maps can be read as a documentation of historical developments and contemporary layers and networks. But the book is also a forward-looking plea in the tradition of Oswald Mathias Ungers, Rem Koolhaas, or Philipp Oswalt. For Ernst and Tratz, Berlin's peculiarities, as they result from the history of the last 100 years, do not represent anomalies that need to be corrected by reconstruction. Rather, they are qualities that should be preserved in light of the continuing pressure on the city to grow.
In this sense, their maps are tools that can help reconcile the ongoing densification processes with a claim for open space, at least in the so called Umstadt (fringe city). Their book therefore also offers ‚ a look at a Berlin that might still come to existence,‘ as they write in their introduction.“

More here – the issue is on Lyon, really interesting city, that wasn't on my radar before

🏅 Best Book Design from all over the World 2022 🌎🌍🌏 HONORARY APPRECIATION DE Migrant Marseille Marc Angelil, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes u.a. (Ed.) Design: Something Fantastic Art Department with Fernanda Tellez Velasco Publisher: Ruby Press https://www.stiftung-buchkunst.de/en/best-book-design-from-all-over-the-world/the-awardees/detail/migrant-marseille/?view=grid&year=2022&category=10 Large-scale immigration has shaped the city of Marseille. This compact paperback explores the urbanistic causes for the uneasy coexistence between natives and migrants – while also pointing the way towards a more inclusive urban planning. It’s a handbook whose sober and pragmatic approach is matched by a similarly sober and pragmatic design. In a very good way. This compendium feels light even if the content is not. Format, volume, weight, great! The format defines the flow, an invitation to dive into the topic. Thin pages bound by dispersion glue make it easy to handle, with the book falling open almost by itself, while precisely delineated isometric drawings offer overviews of the city’s sprawling housing projects. Here, one is reminded of the rigour of Le Corbusier’s vision of open spaces in dense cities, and of the way social realities have given such idealistic plans a very different face. The aesthetic of those realities is documented via uncommented street photography, the analytical texts being backed up by images from on-the-ground explorations. A similarly unflinching approach can be seen in the typography. Almost unbelievably for a printed book, headings are in upper case Arial, a secretarial font the use of which requires both conviction and a feel for the subject matter. Further evidence of both can be seen in the typeface for the body matter: here the designers chose Life, a suitably lively derivative of the evergreen Times. There is nothing wrong with the decisions of type, not at all. #bestbookdesignfromallovertheworld #awardees #germany #honoraryappreciation #bookdesign #graphicdesign #internationalcompetition #cover #illustration #typography #de #architecture #marseille

‘NEVER DEMOLISH’ – Intervention at Mies van der Rohe Pavilion The intervention “Never Demolish” was presented on November 26 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion by the curators Ilka and Andreas Ruby (Ruby Press), from the transformation project of 530 dwellings in the Grand Parc Bordeaux by the architects Lacaton & Vassal architectes, Frédéric Druot Architecture and Christophe Hutin Architecture. The project won the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award in 2019. Through this intervention, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion is transformed into a domestic space inspired by the winning project of the last edition of the Prize. A transformation that deepens the debate on housing and how the Bordeaux project becomes a model for the social and physical rehabilitation of the housing blocks of the modern movement and its surroundings. An intervention aimed at and equally affecting the inhabitants, architects, urban planners, developers, heritage conservators and politicians.
