Zukunft braucht Erinnerung

Simone Segouin, mostly known by her codename, Nicole Minet, was only 18-years-old when the Germans invaded. Her first act of rebellion was to steal a bicycle from a German military administration, and to slice the tires of all of the other bikes and motorcycles so they couldn't pursue her. She found a pocket of the Resistance and joined the fight, using the stolen bike to deliver messages between Resistance groups.

She was an extremely fast learner and quickly became an expert at tactics and explosives. She led teams of Resistance fighters to capture German troops, set traps, and sabotage German equipment. As the war dragged on, her deeds escalated to derailing German trains, blocking roads, blowing up bridges and helping to create a German-free path to help the Allied forces retake France from the inside. She was never caught.

Segouin was present at the liberation of Chartres on August 23, 1944, and then the liberation of Paris two days later. She was promoted to lieutenant and awarded several medals, including the Croix de Guerre. After the war, she studied medicine and became a pediatric nurse. She is still going strong, and this October (2021) she will turn 96. ❤️

Be warned. The famous contemporary art exhibition in Berlin is exactly what Berlin is about: overhyped mediocracy. Displayed at the infamous techno club #berghain collector #boros displays a #cacophony of contextless B- or C-art of well known or not so well known artist. We’d recommend to visit only if you’re willing to pay the entrance fee to have a look at the spectacular industrial architecture of the Berghain. If you’re paying for art you’ll be pretty disappointed.

Even Dwarfs Started Small

An early film by Werner Herzog. Surreal, unforgettable and deeply disturbing. Find out for yourself if its about anarchy, the rise of fascism or just the pleasure of creating mayhem.

In a police station a dwarf is seated on a chair. He is photographed and then interrogated about acts of violence he committed during a revolt. The story thus turns back in time, to when the dwarfs, detained in a correction facility, took advantage of the director’s absence to rebel.

17/09/2020

In the 1920s, the historian of art and culture Aby Warburg (1866-1929) created his Bilderatlas Mnemosyne tracing recurring visual themes and patterns across time, from antiquity to the Renaissance and beyond to contemporary culture. His approach provides inspiration for today’s visually and digitally dominated world. At HKW all 63 panels of the Atlas will be recovered for the first time from Warburg’s original images.
Aby Warburg studied the interplay of images from different periods and cultural contexts. He designed the Mnemosyne Atlas to provide a pictorial representation of the influences of the ancient world in the Renaissance and beyond. In its last documented version, the Atlas consisted of large black panels on which Warburg placed photographic reproductions of artworks from the Middle East, European antiquity and the Renaissance, alongside contemporary newspaper clippings and advertisements. In the years leading to his death in 1929, Warburg and his closest colleagues Gertrud Bing and Fritz Saxl experimented with the form and function of the Bilderatlas. Their goal was to present a publication designed for discussion among experts as well as the broader public. During the course of its creation, the Atlas developed into an instrument of cognition.
Warburg’s method set new standards: it consisted in rearranging canonized images and looking at them across epochs. His project traversed the boundaries between art history, philosophy and anthropology and was fundamental for the modern disciplines of visual and media studies. Today, his use of visual memory provides inspiration and alternative routes through a reality dominated by visual media.
The exhibition at HKW restores the last documented version of the 1929 Atlas almost completely with the original images. In collaboration with the Warburg Institute in London, the curators Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil have located most of the originals, some partly in color, 971 images from the 400,000 individual objects in the Institute’s Photographic Collection to show all 63 panels of Warburg’s unfinished magnum opus for the first time since his death.

One again - context makes #art. This time it’s #thomasrentmeister who dumped a couple of old fridges in the garden of the #hausamwaldsee art foundation. He did this 2009 and probably gave birth to a Berlin-wide artist movement - as you encounter very often broken household appliance in the streets. One of these art objects happens to be on display just next to our #gallery. Must be a legacy of the #berlinartweek.
