In honor of Sprüth Magers’ global representation of the Estate of John Baldessari, the gallery is pleased to present a selection of works for The Art Show (November 3–7) that illustrate the artist’s consistent exploration of film and cinematic imagery.

Examples from different periods in the artist’s decades-long career underscore Baldessari’s innovative approach to moving images, photography and painting, which he interwove with frequent references to the language of screenplays and his ubiquitous use of film stills. Highlights include early storyboard and text works from the 1970s, as well as important examples from his later series Scene / Take (2014).

Organized by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA), The Art Show benefits Henry Street Settlement, one of New York’s leading social service, arts, and health care organizations.

David Lamelas’ iconic work Situación de tiempo, first exhibited in 1967 at the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires, has recently been acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art–the first permanent acquisition of this work by a US institution. This early installation marks one of Lamelas’ earliest attempts to make “non-descriptive, non-physical art pieces”, calling attention not to the content of the 17 television sets that comprise this artwork, but to the temporal nature of the electronic medium as a whole.

Pamela Rosenkranz's first solo exhibition in London is on view through November.

In her oeuvre, Rosenkranz questions the certainties of authentic human experience, perceiving people as permeable membranes at the interface between nature and artificiality. Drawing on themes that we encounter in our everyday, visually overcharged lives, Rosenkranz creates links that allow us to make unexpected connections between objects and ideas, while at the same time unsettling us. On the main floor, visible from outside through the large window front, as if in a terrarium, lives a robotic snake covered with kirigami scales.

In her current exhibition at Sprüth Magers, Los Angeles, Cao Fei’s two most recent feature-length films, Nova (2019) and Asia One (2018), are represented both on screen and through suites of photographs. Also on view are two earlier projects that exhibit the same sense of beauty and melancholy, always punctuated by moments of humor, which have come to characterize Cao Fei’s luminous films: La Town (2014) and Haze and Fog (2013). The exhibition is presented as an immersive installation, with the visual vocabulary and setting of Cao Fei’s films extending into the exhibition space.

Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are pleased to present a solo exhibition of recent films, photographs and sculptures by Cao Fei at the Los Angeles gallery, the artist’s largest presentation to date on the West Coast.

Cao Fei, based in Beijing and recognized for her groundbreaking work since the mid-1990s, is one of today’s foremost contemporary artists and filmmakers. Across her multimedia projects we witness individuals coming to terms with both the beauty and the perils of a global, industrialized and hyperconnected world.

Thomas Scheibitz solo exhibition "Black Swan" features new works including paintings, sculptures, and a continuation of his numbered group of works gp, large works on rag paper. Make sure to stop by our London gallery until November 20 or if you are in town for Frieze this week.

The definition of the term and the exhibition title Black Swan describes a singular event that occurs unexpectedly, typically an occurrence that is considered to have a low probability but high impact, and only in hindsight is determined to have in fact been predictable. Thus, the title of the exhibition is a metaphor for the present time as well as for painting or the painting itself.

It's the final week of Art in Mayfair–now in its fourth year, the project celebrates art and culture in the heart of Mayfair. It's a collaboration between Bond Street and the Royal Academy of Arts that sees art spill out onto the streets, such as Gary Hume's set of flags that flies above many of the outdoor sculptures. On view through October 17.
