With INTERGHOSTS, returns, after more than a decade, to his photographic-painterly works on aluminum composite panels, a technique he originally purpose-developed and had patented. The starting point consists of photographic themes that function as the grounding on the panels, which he then processes with further layers of painting — sometimes more and sometimes fewer translucent layers of lacquers, binders, pigments, and glass particles. What is decisive here is not only the expressive painterly-gestural aspect of applying the individual layers of materials, but also their physical properties and the exploration of how they interact.   Holger Schmidhuber

’s INTERGHOSTS emerges from a vast archive of field recordings — photographic, written, video, and audio notes gathered in places charged with memory, atmosphere, and history.  From the monumental interior of Copenhagen’s Frederikskirche to the desolate landscape of Skid Row in Los Angeles, from the barren Wadden Sea in Schleswig-Holstein to a small scene of growth and decay on the forest floor of the Taunus — each place carries its own aura.  Rather than documenting these encounters, Schmidhuber transforms them into resonating spaces, where atmospheres, memories, and emotional states merge. Come by and visit the exhibition THE KILLER by !��With THE KILLER, Holger Schmidhuber transforms the exhibition space into an energy-charged field between the twin poles of a sober-determinist AI system, on the one hand, and gestural-expressive materiality, on the other. To this end, he covers the neutral white-cube walls with his 3 x 24-meter-large piece THE KILLER on the wall, a digitally generated “wallpaper”. THE KILLER —

With THE KILLER, Schmidhuber transforms the exhibition space into an energy-charged field between the twin poles of a sober, determinist AI system and gestural, expressive materiality.

His digitally generated wallpaper — THE KILLER on the wall — defines an overarching pictorial space in which selected works from the Black & White Inversions and INTERGHOSTS cycles are staged.
Painterly materiality takes the front seat, while behind it, cool AI logic unfolds in seemingly infinite mutations across the wall.
