Around this time 20 years ago, a compilation called The Politics of Dancing was released by the Berlin based electronic artist Paul Van Dyk. I had already been interested in electronic music for some time when I eventually heard it, but the album became a landmark moment for me at the beginning of my career.
The compilation was a collection of upfront records, that PvD had rebuilt into his own style and then mixed together to form a 2 disk journey through Progressive and Trance. I found myself captivated by it, listening to it on repeat over & over again. It posed so many questions to answer about every part of it, from how the sounds were made, to where the records themselves came from and who made them. It proved to be the beginning of a journey of discovery for me; opening my eyes to ways of making music I had never really considered previously and to a whole counter culture of electronic music that existed outside of the commercial realm I had been used to up until that point. It is directly responsible for sparking my interest in being a DJ; within a few months of hearing the album I had already built a modest record collection and learnt to mix the records together, including some from the TPOD album. I would still have those records today, however I lent them to a friend who never gave them back and we lost touch when he moved away. A few years later I began the journey into music production.
Whilst the genre is considered old fashioned these days, the production quality of the music still holds its own today, and the themes PvD wrote about in the liner notes are still very much relevant today in Berlin.
Today, whilst I haven't yet experienced the level of success PvD has, I also find myself in Berlin, where The Politics of Dancing was created, with new producers and DJ's asking me about where my music comes from, what it means and how it's created.
The first release on enable:audio is from Berlin based producer and label owner Distant Sun.
'Shadows in Dust' is a 4 track hypnotic Techno journey aimed straight at the dancefloor.
The title of the track references the concept that 'we are nothing but shadows in dust'. Situations, relationships and issues that seem so important to us currently, will eventually fall away into insignificance and out of human memory.
We are currently in the midst of a global pandemic which has affected everyones lives in some form, however, in 50 years, no-one will care, they will have a different set of problems which will be more important to them.
When the pandemic began, many people didn't know that the same thing happened in 1921, and millions of people died across the world. The Coronavirus Pandemic will be as important to our descendants in 100 years as the Spanish Flu was to us in 2020.
Nothing lasts forever, the Sun and Moon will both continue to rise and set; the tide will still ebb and flow.

Today is a big day...
Enable:Launch @ BERLIN: The launch party will take place tonight at Dream Baby Dream, on GreifswalderStraße from 21:00. I will be DJing between 21:00 - 00:00. We also have Diego Alvarez taking over on the decks to see us through the rest of the night. 2G Covid rules apply.
For those not in Berlin or unable to attend the party, fear not! enable:audio is first and foremost a record label, specialising in ambient, dub and hypnotic techno music. However, rather than just be another label from another Berlin DJ, it will operate a little differently and hopefully add something to the scene.
The concept is to enable creativity in producers and DJ’s by providing music not just for performance, but for stimulating creativity and learning in both DJ’s and producers.
As well as releasing music on digital platforms, there will also be stems of released tracks made available, sample packs and in the future – instruments too.
The core element of the enable:audio concept is the enable:academy, which is home to the ’28 Day Track Hack’, an online hybrid course that combines group based sessions focussed on beating writers block, smarter mixing & listening techniques AND personalised 1-2-1 tuition, that can be tailored to suit the needs of every student, whatever their ability, experience and learning requirement. This isn’t quite ready yet, but I'm hopefull that the first course will run in February 2022.
The first release on the label is one of my own, titled 'Shadows in Dust', and will be available everywhere on the 10th December. It is currently available to stream exclusively on Spotify and is available for sale exclusively on Beatport. The feedback so far has been great.

Distant Sun is a DJ and Electronic Music Producer originally from South Wales UK, now living in Berlin DE.
Initially attracted to electronic music through a fascination with its ethereal / otherworldly sounds, Distant Sun was firstly inspired by the deep and tribal sounds of Progressive. The percussive elements and long mix transitions widely used in the genre served as a gateway to Techno, where hypnotic repetition and polyrhythmic sequences were particularly inspiring.
After around 3 years of DJing, he was inspired to begin learning to produce electronic music in 2006. Some years later, whilst studying a Masters degree in Music Production and Engineering at University, Distant Sun explored the connections between Minimalism and Minimal Techno as a Thesis subject and was particularly drawn to the political principles of atonality put forward by Arnold Schönberg. The concept of atonal music existing as a contrast to popular music held a particular resonance, when considered with the political counter-culture ethos and freedom of expression that exists within the Techno community.
It is this ethos that drives Distant Sun’s production & composition methods and DJ style, giving people enough information to dance, whilst not providing enough information to influence their own perceptions of the music. Mostly devoid of melodies and progressions but laden with atmosphere, stripped back percussion and synth noise, all underpinned by a bass that tears through the club system so that the music occupies your feet, but not your mind.
Now settled in Berlin, Distant Sun has released music on KarateKlub and DJ’d in various venues in the UK and across Berlin, including regular appearances at AVA since 2017 as a resident DJ for the Hainmat party.
