Approaching the center of Australia, in the middle of nowhere, lies Coober Pedy, an infamous mining town. Coober Pedy owes its existence to the discovery of opal seams in 1915, an iridescent gemstone formed from the water that once covered this desert scape. This precious opal has been mined in a series of boom and busts, almost into oblivion. Beyond the mullock heaps and away from the sun’s searing heat lies the underground dugouts inhabited by the last of the miners, still dreaming of one last opal-rich strike. The men who keep the idiosyncrasies of the town alive and well, offer an insight into the characters who call this place their forever home. Beauty is found in the remnants of this surreal magnetic landscape shaped by extremities of harshness, isolation and finite resources.

START OF PRESALE! NEW BOOK: The Unknown - Russia 2003.
by Rob Hornstra
* link in bio!
'The Unknown' presents previously unseen portraits taken in 2003 as a graduation project. Hornstra travelled through the Russian province of Chelyabinsk to do something about the first generation of Russians growing up after the collapse of communism. One month later he came home with 1,148 medium- and large-format negatives. The majority of these are portraits of people he met during his wanderings through the provincial capital and surrounding villages.
For his book 'Communism & Cowgirls' (2004), Hornstra mainly selected personal images that He took in people's homes. The chance encounters on the street remained untouched in the negative folders for years.
👉️ 'The Unknown' will be launched during Paris Photo 2022. If you pick up your copy at Kominek Books during Paris Photo, you can avoid shipping costs by using the discount code PICKUPPARIS at checkout.

YAGA is a photo book about the idea of the emancipation of socially excluded women that the system finds inconvenient. It offers a subjective view of women and the inequality that exists even in the q***r world, where men still have more space to tell their stories than non-heteronormative women, who seem to lose sight of it.
Baba Yaga is a common archetype in Slavic countries: it is about an old woman who lives alone in the forest, surrounded by an animated natural world, in which the ghosts of her ancestors manifest as black cats and old evil crows. (...) Baba Yaga, as the embodiment of patriarchal fears, brings to the fore issues of status, resources and norms that must be obeyed. The cabin in the Baba Yaga forest is perched on chicken feet, which symbolizes exclusion, being an image of isolation, loneliness, misery and poverty, being also a symbol of opposition and the emanation of revenge. potential. (excerpt from an essay by Agata Kalinowska)
Yaga constitutes an archetype of contemporary witch, but YAGA is, above all, an emancipatory idea. Agata Kalinowska’s first publication is a book on freedom, on non-heteronormative standards of attractiveness, the shame of age, and the deconstruction of the male-female myths that make up the system. It is also a work on the relationship between beauty and female identity imposed by society. It is about the liberating power of a conscious choice to be excluded, to function outside the limits of the norms and the established cultural context, about the isolation that allows one to exist on their own terms.
Agata Kalinowska - photographer, writer and waitress affiliated with BWA Wrocław, Ośrodek Postaw Twórczych (Center for Creative Arts), and the Wrocław bar scene. His interests include the experiences of the precariat, which he documents on his blog relativelyhuman.blogspot.com. Agata’s work has been presented in Poland and abroad….YAGA, was released by BWA Wrocław in August 2021
Remembering Enrique Metinides, who passed away a few days ago at the age of 88. For me one of the greatest press photographers, who with his images managed to convert brutality and tragedy of the daily life of Mexico City in to art. Not making it just more digestible but also making life more understandable... He sometimes was also called the "Mexican Weege" which I think does not pay enough tribute to this great artist and photographer. He was called also "el niño" given the fact that he started publishing his pictures in Mexican press at the age of 11.
I had the pleasure to visit Enrique in 2011 at his home in Mexico City.
We have stayed only 10 days but it was a very intense and exiting time ( where I managed to pinch my finger in to a driving car and catch the most intense food poisoning I ever experienced :-) But most of all we were able to film and interview Metinides on the streets of DF.
We also scanned a lot of material at his living room. Later in Berlin we printed SERIES, a book which I think is still one of the best I ever published under the imprint of Kominek Books. We produced the book with the help of the great Dutch book designer Sybren Kuiper. Thank you also once more to Veronique Ricardoni for putting us in touch with Enrique in the first place and to Carlos Alvarez Montero for the scanning at Enriques home! Also to my friend and brother Jacob Thein for the filming and support.
We also later exhibited the work in Berlin at Kominek Gallery. Despite the difficulties to get the attention of a larger public or any institutional support in Berlin, I think we made a great job in making Enriques work a little more know in Europe. Thank you also to Ann Kristin Kreisel for the great gallery and exhibition support during that period!

English Description
The Road Beyond is a book of peace, says photographer Ruslan Hrushchak about his work. The timing of the publication of his pictures and the poems of Iryna Tsilyk creates a stark irony: the unrest in eastern Ukraine, which has gone on for years, has turned into open war.
Hrushchak, born in Ukraine, has been living in Germany for 20 years. Tsilyk lives and works in Kyiv; by juxtaposing their outstanding art they have created a

River's Dream is the latest monograph by Curran Hatleberg, and a complete realization of the series exhibited at the 2019 Whitney Biennial.
Hatleberg is known for traveling America, guided by intuition, to create scenes of American life and landscape. Working collaboratively with the people he meets, he recounts intimate stories of family and community. Here, in the follow-up to his first monograph Lost Coast (TBW Books, 2016), Hatleberg centers his narrative on the dog days of summer. Sweltering heat, dripping humidity, lush vegetation, and screaming insects–River's Dream is a pulsing and episodic hallucination of life lived outdoors. In these sixty-five photographs, we move through swamps and groves, front yards and junkyards, encountering moments of haunting mystery and beautiful impermanence. Heightened by formal repetition, echo, and refrain, everyday scenes take on surreal, allegorical qualities. In the end, Hatleberg leaves us with the impression of memory, where the past is never gone, but appears and reappears endlessly, as in the flickering of a dream.
This book includes new texts by Natasaha Trethewey and Joy Williams commissioned for the publication

Good Goddamn tells a nominally simple story. Shot over a period of a few days in February 2017, in Leon County, Texas, Good Goddamn documents, in only twenty-seven photographs, the last few days of freedom of Schutmaat’s friend Kris before he went into prison. As this is a book of hints and half-lights, the spaces between the pictures being as important, so to speak, as the pictures themselves, we are not informed of the crime that led to Kris’s incarceration, nor the duration of the sentence. But the fact he was not in custody possibly suggests that the misdemeanour was not serious, although the psychological weight of the book perhaps points to the opposite.
