At our last concert at @palaislichtenau, we met some Ukrainian musicians who had just left their country, one with just a violin and a backpack. They told us that our concert was a “breath of fresh air.” And what a reminder that was to us that we all need to tend to our spiritual as well as our physical needs. 👐
We are devastated about the violence being inflicted on innocent people, on children. And we will continue to offer music as solace, as a reminder of joy, of the generosity and immensity of the human spirit.
Erich Wolfgang Korngold had to flee Vienna practically overnight, leaving behind a stellar career as composer and conductor, fame and adulation and his favorite playgrounds: Europe’s opera houses. On his way out of the country, stopping to fill up the car, the gas station attendant asked him: “Korngold? Like the composer?” That’s how well-known he was.
He started all over again in Hollywood and became one of the most famous and revered film music composers, establishing the genre and setting the bar for generations to come.
On April 1st (no joke), you can hear our recording of his 3rd string quartet, written during the war years in Hollywood.

🇺🇦 Die Ukraine ist noch nicht tot 🇺🇦 heißt ein Gedicht von Pawlo Tschubynskyj, 1865 wurde es vertont in einer Orchesterfassung und erstmals als Hymne aufgeführt. Heute ist sie die Nationalhymne der Ukraine.
Aus aktuellem Anlass ändert das Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB) sein aktuelles Konzertprogramm und spielt die 🇺🇦 Ukrainische Nationalhymne 🇺🇦 sowie die „Sinfonische Ouvertüre Nr. 1“ von Mychajlo Werbyzkyj.
Vladimir Jurowski, Chefdirigent und Künstlerischer Leiter des RSB, begründet diese Änderung so:
„Den Beginn der militärischen Aggression seitens der Russischen Föderation gegen die Ukraine habe ich bis zuletzt nicht für möglich gehalten. Ich bin zutiefst entrüstet über diese Aktion aber auch extrem traurig, weil ich durch meine Familiengeschichte mit beiden Ländern verbunden bin. Ich hoffe, dass der Frieden so schnell wie möglich wieder hergestellt wird. Mit der Programmänderung für unsere Konzerte am Wochenende wollen wir ein Zeichen der Solidarität mit dem ukrainischen Volk setzen.“

Fritz Kreisler was already a world-famous violinist when the First World War broke out and he went to the Polish front as a reserve soldier. There, the only use he made of his musical ear was to identify where artillery shells reached their acme by way of sound—a dull sound for going up, a shrill one for falling—and instruct the battery to aim in that direction.
It is a sad day when human beings capable of making art, connections, beauty, and harmony are reduced to seeking survival in any way possible.

The meaning of performing has been transformed for us by this pandemic era. Playing with the quartet has always been our favorite kind of performance, and lately it’s also become an existential need to convene with real people and feel the energy of all those humans breathing (even behind masks!), to imagine their hearts beating with ours as we bring the music to life. 🎭
With so many crises colliding head-on, it’s easy to tell ourselves that music is less important than other, more pragmatic things. But it’s not, it can’t be. It is catharsis for all of us at a time when it’s desperately needed. It is joy, it is despair, it is transcendence of time-bound emotion. ✨

As for everyone, it's been, well, 2021, and although there's an unhappy sense of déjà-vu in terms of new lockdowns looming over the arts industry, we have much to be thankful for and feel privileged to be working for and with such an inspiring group of artists. We are grateful to all the incredible presenting partners internationally who, like us, believe the "show must go on"; that we humans need art and creativity, just as we need air to breathe.
There were too many projects and stories to share in these 24 days and although we probably won't go on posting daily (!) there are definitely some more stories to come.
May you and yours stay healthy and safe and be sure to enjoy some good music into the New Year!
