MOURNING MORNING / Paper flower workshop with Rozalina Busel
Language: english

Hotel Continental – Art Space in Exile, Elsenstraße 87, 12435 Berlin

Mourning Morning is a workshop by visual artist Rozalina Busel, whose practice explores themes of migration, social inequality, and emotional experience. Working primarily in ceramics, she also incorporates sound, video, photography, texts, and ready-mades, often focusing on physical and symbolic borders.

During the workshop, participants will learn how to make carnations from simple materials such as crepe paper and wire. The carnation, in this context, becomes a symbol of mourning and transition — the end of life in one place and the beginning in another. Rozalina invites participants to experience the process as a personal ritual, a way of expressing emotions and reflecting on difficult experiences through meditative handwork. This act of creation can provide a moment of calm and introspection.

The Mourning Morning installation is part of Rozalina’s long-term project Borders and Restrictions, which explores the experience of relocation and interprets the transition between life and death through the lens of funerary rituals. The paper carnations suspended in the air allude to Soviet traditions, collective memory, and personal grief.

Rozalina Busel (b.1990) is a visual artist from Belarus, currently based in Warsaw. She holds degrees in Ceramics and Art History from the Belarusian State Academy of Arts and studied at the University of Art in Linz, Austria. Since 2019, she has been a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) in Geneva.

Mosaic workshop with Aliaksandr Belski .by

Languages: Russian and German

Hotel Continental – Art Space in Exile, Elsenstraße 87, 12435 Berlin

As side event accompanying the exhibition КРОПКА СХОДУ / VANISHING POINT, we invite you to a mosaic workshop led by artist Aliaksandr Belski.

Participants will get to know the basics of working with natural stone and smalt (pigmented glass), learn about materials and tools, and explore how mosaic art can be created even in everyday conditions. The workshop emphasizes the process — combining raw natural materials, manual labor, and contemporary artistic expression.

Aliaksandr Belski on his practice:
“This workshop focuses on mosaic techniques. Participants will try working with stones of different colors and hardness, and will get to know the material from the inside. I use natural stone, cutting it into thin fragments that are convenient and pleasant to work with. The stones are common types like granite, basalt, sandstone, and more. Near the place where I live, there used to be a stone road. After it was dismantled, many stones were left behind — I decided to give them new life through art.

In addition to stone, participants will work with smalt — colored glass with pigment. It’s easier to handle but no less expressive. During the workshop, it will become clear how to make mosaics at home, what tools are needed, and how the act of working with stone connects us with the deep time and history of our planet.”

Rimma and me (dance project)

Work in process.

Behind the curtain, the Iron Curtain, a cute curtain in a train dividing two strangers, a border, a wall in a prison cell or something that connects us to childhood memories.

Or does it split life into a before and after? What else can it be? How much convention is there in it, how much weight, how easy or difficult is it to go through?

This dance performance is a part of the event “Belarus as a global case: art and activism in conditions of risk”.

We’re thrilled to introduce our new artist in residence: Alexander Kot-Zaitsaŭ at BCS.

An architect by training and a photographer by practice, Alexander explores themes of migration, memory, and identity through his lens.

Originally from Belarus and now based in Warsaw, his work bridges personal and political narratives. His photobook DOM. reflects on the meaning of “home” in the context of displacement, while his current project Borderline examines the psychological impact of repression in Belarus.

Alexander has exhibited across Europe and collaborated with brands and institutions including YSL, Maison Margiela, and the Arton Foundation.

Welcome, Alexander. We’re excited to share this journey with you.
