Participating artists: Laure Catugier, Kelli Gedvil, Alexei Gordin, Kennet Lekko, Marko Mäetamm, Kristen Rästas, Roman-Sten Tõnissoo, Ellen Vene
Curator: Anita Kodanik
"Exercises for Dreamkeeping" focuses on the axis between Estonia and Berlin, which has been increasingly felt in the art scene lately. The group exhibition is a reflection on the artists' time in Germany during their residencies, and presents work by each artist, either created during their residency or otherwise inspired by their experience in Berlin.
The artists open up the anxieties of leaving and returning, the contradictions of dreams and realities, of experience and perishability, that are inherent in the work in the art field. Together, they examine the realities that artists face when moving from the domestic cultural scene to the wider arena.
In the constant state of arrival and departure, the artists carry with them their work along with spatial experiences, memories, aspirations and expectations. How can we remember the feeling that the pursuit of a dream once gave us? What to do when long-held aspirations and ambitions turn out to be quite different from what we expected? What will become of our fierce but fleeting desires in the future?
In addition to the seven Estonian artists, the exhibition also includes works by German artist Laure Catugier, who is in residence at TYPA this year (October - November). The residency and exhibition is organised by the Berlin roam project space in cooperation with TYPA Tartu and MTÜ Eesti-Saksa Kunstikoostöö.
Supported by: Estonian Cultural Endowment, Goethe Institute
Very excited to announce artist Laure Catugier was chosen for the residency in Tartu, Estonia, organised by MTÜ Eesti-Saksa Kunstikoostöö, roam project space, Berlin (roam projects e.V.) and Printing and Paper Arts Centre TYPA, which kindly accomodates and provides for the residency.
Laure Catugier (1982, Toulouse, France) lives and works in Berlin.
As a visual artist with an architectural background, Catugier's work is connected to the architectural elements of Modernism and the subsequent movements that drew inspiration from it. She explores the diversity of global post-war architecture through residencies around the world. Her research focuses on the social aspect of modernist buildings and in particular on collective housing and its progressive norms, spaces, forms and uses.
Since 2015, she has obtained several residency grants in Germany, Austria, Japan, Russia, Iran, Czech republic, Egypt, Israël, Poland, Estonia, Bolivia and Taiwan. She is the winner of the International Celeste Prize, as well as scholarships from the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt Berlin, the Pilecki Institute Warsaw and the Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn. Her work has been exhibited internationally (selection) : Liebling Haus - White City center (Tel Aviv), Total Museum (Seoul), In Sonora Festival (Madrid), Artum Foundation (Warsaw), Laznia Contemporary Art Museum (Gdansk), Centraltrack Gallery (Dallas, US), Galerie Weisser Elefant, German-Japanese Cultural Center and Korean Cultural Center in Berlin; Stadtmuseum and Institut Français in Düsseldorf.

The exhibition “Lines of Deconstruction” displays works by Bulgarian artist Stela Vasileva who spent the last one month in artist residency at roam project space in Berlin.
Being inspired by the city’s architecture, Vasileva presents at her exhibition detailed black and white drawings of local buildings together with geometric glass sculptures and industrial objects. These objects were found and gathered by the artist during her walks, which also had the purpose of getting her acquainted with Berlin and its diverse forms, lines and materials.
The showcased works are in constant dialogue with their fragility and heaviness, shape and size and this gets extended to the exhibition space’s existing architecture. The glass objects in either square or triangular shapes play with light, which gets both reflected and refracted, thus defining what the human eye sees. In contrast to this, the industrial ready-mades combine cold, artificial metal and concrete, which has been corroded and deformed by time, nature and human activity. Vasileva displays these exhibits as independent sculptures that, in correlation with each other, form a unified site-specific installation.
Stela Vasileva, the current residency artist at roam will have a solo exhibition during the Art Week Berlin. Here’s a quick impression of her new upcoming work! 📐🏢
The conceptual framework of Stela’s creation is inspired by the multi-faced architecture of Berlin, which she has been visually experiencing during her stay. The artworks in making trace and explore the apparent and more hidden structures found both in the old and new architecture of this city.
More coming soon! We will keep you posted! 👀
This residency is in collaboration with Structura Gallery, Sofia and Lachezar Tsotsorkov Foundation.
We’re excited to announce our autumn 2022 Bulgarian residency artist Stela Vasileva! She will be staying at roam from mid-August until mid-September. The residency will end with an exhibition during Art Week Berlin.
In collaboration with Structura Gallery, Sofia and Lachezar Tsotsorkov Foundation.
Stela Vasileva works in the field of the object, the installation, and the drawing. She explores the form, the objects in space, with the main attempt to unload the objects of any superfluous elements, while also putting it out of the context of its concrete (ordinary) environment. In doing so, she often erases the boundaries of real space.
Stela Vasileva (b.1983) lives and works in Sofia. She graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia with a major in Mural Painting. She won the Gaudenz B. Ruf Award (2010), Nominations for the BAZA Award for Contemporary Art (2013-2015) as well as various residences including KulturKontakt, Vienna, Austria (2012), Krinzinger Projekte, Petomihalyfa, Hungary – Vienna (2012), Cité Internationale des arts Paris, France (2014).
Stela Vasileva participated in numerous group exhibitions and projects some of which: “Intimacy and spectacle in the age of social media”, The Largo, Sofia (2021); “The Pric/ze is Right” – NEXT Balkan: Bulgarian Contemporary Art in Belgrade, Serbia (2021); “History Between‘‘, Regional History Museum – Sofia, (2020); ‘‘State of Apparition’’ Aether Gallery, Hague, Holland (2019)); Process in Progress, Bäckerstrasse4 – platform for young art, Vienna, AT (2015); ViennaContemporary, Focus Bulgaria, Vienna, AT (2015) and others.
Among her solo appearances are: ‘’Transposition’’, Posta space, Sofia (2022); Lines of Time (in pencil and paper), Arosita Gallery, Sofia (2019); Colorful Gravity, Night Plovdiv 2019; “Signs of Sound”, +359 Gallery, Sofia (2018/2019); “Under Construction”, Contemporary Space Gallery, Varna (2015) and others.

Opening the exhibition 'Out of Sight is Out of Mind' already tomorrow at 6pm!
Find details below.
The two-week residency project ‘Out of Sight Is Out of Mind’ by Roman-Sten Tõnissoo and Ellen Vene brings the visitor to an experiential dreamscape where ephemeral bonds are formed between moments and mementos.
We are thrilled to announce our new residency artist Ellen Vene at roam project space!
Ellen Vene (b. 1990) is an artist, cultural organizer and radio host based in Tallinn, Estonia. She has studied sculpture and installation art in the Estonian Academy of Arts and Die Angewandte in Vienna and holds an MA degree in art practice. Her various practices combine image, sound and storytelling, often reflecting on her immediate surroundings, everyday life and the social structures within. Lived experiences are translated into poetical narratives in the form of installations that generally involve the whole space. Her works have been presented at Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM), NU Performance Festival, Intonal Festival, and Gallery Mihhail in Tallinn among others.
The residency programme at roam has a focus on East European artists and is taking place during the highlights of Berlin's art year.
We will keep you updated!
