TROUBLED NATURE

Presented are works of art on the themes of climate change, environmental destruction, species extinction and its catastrophic effects on life on the planet. Pain- tings, photographs, films, sculptures and installations show, among other things, the beauty of a blade of grass, a tree trunk or a glacier, the brutality of nature‘s demo- lition or the legacies of our civilization. All the works reflect our world in its beauty, vulnerability and threat.

Anja Teske
Neighbour's Garden, 2014-2022
Pigtail prints on handmade paper

“The photographs of lawns are taken continuously in different countries; for example in Denmark, Ireland, Iceland, Poland and Germany. They are front gardens, playgrounds or other meadows, centre pieces in the garden or sports lawns from cities and rural areas. It fascinates me to discover their sculptural and colour modulations in a seemingly uniform surface. These minimal, private landscapes, from gardens of „neighbours", are backdrops for the activities of their owners without having to see them. Are there typologies typical of a country and a correspondingly typical understanding of landscape design?”

Artist talk: Sunday 11th September 12pm

In celebration of new exhibition: BODIES IN TROUBLE

London based art collective Infems In conversation with Berlin based artists Kerstin Drechsel and Sabine Herrmann. A discussion of their experiences as working women artists.

“InFems (Intersectional Feminist Art Collective) is an organisation whose aim is to empower women and girls from diverse backgrounds to share their stories and become engaged with the arts. InFems stages exhibitions and facilitates dialogue through the delivery of symposiums, talks and workshops.

There is an infinite array of different experiences of womanhood and they all deserve a voice which is why we use the term intersectional to mean interconnected and fully inclusive.”

TROUBLED NATURE
09/09/2022

Since its founding 155 years ago, the Association of Berlin Women Artists 1867 has been a motor, network and showcase for women artists. Today it unites more than 60 women artists from all over the world who live and work in Berlin. Their works reflect the Berlin art scene and exhibit a remarkable aesthetic, thematic and medial diversity. In the exhibition TROUBLED NATURE, 26 women artists of the association take up the challenge to process the conflict-laden relationship between nature and humankind in works of art.

BODIES IN TROUBLE
09/09/2022

Exhibition BODIES IN TROUBLE will reflect recent social developments and discussions about gender belonging, gender roles, discrimination and racism. In order to approach this complex topic from different perspectives, twelve international women artists, seven of whom live in Berlin and five in London, were invited.

The participating artists address the traditional and misogynous representation of the female body in Western art as well as in the media; the regulation and suppression of the female body through medicine and research. They fight for the enforcement of inclusive habits of representation and identification. They conduct their struggles on and around their bodies with self-reflection, humor, and art historical knowledge.

"THEY ROAM FREELY IN AGING PERIPHERIES, is part of a serial work that emerges from a fictional environment and extensive artistic research on landscapes. The works shown here are a kind of transporter for plants that normally dwell in the underground and should only be pulled out with the help of a black dog.

"Our sound work revolves around the mythology of the sirens. Freed from bodies, the sirens can be heard as fluid, digital and polyphonic voices. In glitch, they empower themselves with their narratives and continue to write themselves as avatars.”

“Generic virtual backgrounds that otherwise conceal the private spaces of Zoom participants materialize into architectures - populated by plants that originate from tropical "places of longing". A postcard greets us from an AI-generated island landscape.
Mediterranean house with sea in the background conveys a sense of placelessness and reflects the relationship between virtuality and physicality in today's working world, as well as its gaze regime in the field of tension between professional, personal and private.”

"My painting materials are varnishes and spray paints. For my compositions, I cover the different surfaces, isolate forms that interest me. I apply several layers on top of each other, which seem to interpenetrate and cross each other. As if they fly and swim on top of each other. With the different painting media, I thus gain a high dynamic of abstract forms in the surface."

“A rectangular piece of nap foam becomes the object of performative action. With this photo series, the artist explores the relationship between subject, object, and environment. The acoustic insulation foam serves both as a sound shield and as a funnel.

STARKES DUO (3/3)

The artworks will include an enormous range of individual artistic attitudes and forms of expression. The medial spectrum ranges from painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, and performance to sound and video works. The collaborative presentation emphasises the flat hierarchies that promote artistic dialogue.

STRONG DUO will highlight the internationality of the Berlin art scene. Berlin as an international art city plays an important role in the careers of the exhibiting artists, who have their roots in Argentina, Germany, France, Italy, Israel, Sweden, and Switzerland.

STRONG DUO (2/3)

This exhibition will represent the beginning of a new tradition. The exhibiting professors were often pioneers – the first women to be appointed to professorships in their fields. As a result, they became trailblazers for a new generation of students and gave aspiring women and gender diverse artists access to networks, art institutions, and markets. The exhibition shows that through the appointment of established women artists as professors, the artistic field is becoming more inclusive.

STRONG DUO (1/3)

An exhibition first: eight internationally renowned women art professors exhibiting together with their women/FLINTA* master students. The result is a cross-generational and medially diverse dialogue between established and emerging artists.

The concept of the exhibition is based on current questions in the world of art, its institutions and gender: Why do forms of discrimination still exist even in the art world today, such as the Gender Pay Gap and the Gender Show Gap? How can the male-dominated canon be changed? And last but not least: (How) can art be taught and learned?
