neue grafik - attempt 1 - 2025
neue grafik is an attempt at defining the new international style. numerous aspects of the international design style have been employed successfully by other types of design and have diluted what we think of as "international" or
"swiss". neue grafik is my attempt and exploration of redefining this.
while my hopes for the philosophy of neue grafik will be larger than purely editorial design, i felt this was the best medium to start my research. influenced by josef müller-brockmann and the old guard of swiss design, i began researching concrete design and how it had made the jump from what was traditional of their time, to the work that set them apart, defining swiss design for the world.
the largest difference from their work to what was considered contemporary the years before, is the heavy reduction of information to only the utmost important, key facts showcased in a bold sans serif with a high attention to detail given to layout and the implementation of a grid system. in neue grafik i have also employed these details by using only one typeface in two different weights. the images used were reduced to a gradient made of the core colours that were found in the photos.
