Giulia Andreani's work is on view at the Centre Pompidou as part of the Marcel Duchamp Prize, alongside the work of Iván Argote, Philippe Decrauzat and Mimosa Échard until January 2, 2023.

Andreani (b. 1985) repurposes personal memorabilia and archival photographs through painting to address forgotten histories, often through a feminist lens. Recalling the collage of Max Ernst and Hannah Höch, the artist uses watercolour and acrylic to reproduce, alter and combine motifs from these photographs generating new layers of meaning.

Themes central to Andreani’s practice include women’s position in society, motherhood, trauma and forgotten figures in political and art history. She creates a dialogue with the past to render visible those made invisible, prescient stories that can guide us into the future.

Anthony Caro’s solo exhibition, “Six Decades”, is on view in our Berlin Potsdamer Str. gallery until October 29.

Over the course of six decades, Sir Anthony Caro (1924–2013) became internationally known as the preeminent British sculptor of his generation. He believed that it was the role of the artist to keep culture moving, resulting in an ever-evolving oeuvre, which saw the artist’s late work as surprising and fresh as his early abstract sculptures.

This exhibition presents 19 sculptures, in tandem with relief paper sculptures and additional figurative works on paper from the 1950s.

Toby Ziegler’s solo exhibition, "Long live ghosts" is on show at our Bleibtreustraße 45 gallery through 29 October.

Ziegler’s hybrid practice involves a wide range of sources, reworked with digital as well as manual tools, combining fast and slow processes into single works, and are prompted by already existent images. The artist creates digital 3D models of objects, figures and landscapes, before rendering them within a geometric grid. Describing this as a schematic way of envisaging a form, this process provides the base for something more intuitive.

The Feuerle Collection is a now defunct WWII bunker that juxtaposes art from different periods and cultures. The exhibition displays a selection of recent works by Edmund de Waal with unseen pieces from the collection and draws parallels between the poeticism of his objects and that of ancient Asian art from the 6th and 16th century.

OPENING 27 SEPTEMBER: Galerie Max Hetzler is pleased to announce an exhibition dedicated to the year 1986, featuring important works by Georg Herold, Albert Oehlen and David Salle. Please join us for the opening on Tuesday, 27 September from 6–8pm.

Bound together by threads of time, Herold and Oehlen’s respective practices came out of a divided post-war Germany, whilst Salle’s work captures the colourful consumerist landscape of the booming 1980s in New York City.

Ida Ekblad’s monumental, painted bronze sculpture ‘BOOK OF BOREDOM’ is now on show at Frieze Sculpture in Regent’s Park, London.

Ekblad’s sculptures form a central part of her artistic practice and allow her to integrate various forms of expression from painting to poetry. Emblematic of her radical take on medium specificity, she reinterprets the conventions of classifying artistic media as a rule to be broken. Ekblad hand paints onto her bronze-cast sculptures, creating a multi-perspective synthesis of mind and memory.

Frieze Sculpture is now open and runs until 13 November 2022.

OPENING TODAY: "William N. Copley: Works on Paper” opens today, 16 September in our Bleibtreustraße 15/16 gallery, the artist’s second solo exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler. Please join us for the opening from 6-8pm.

Not only a painter, but a writer, gallery-owner, collector, publisher and patron to the arts, William N. Copley's animated works abound with playful, baroque patterns and visual puns, combining politics, s*x and satire under the signature CPLY. Copley’s black and white works on paper allows an intimate look into the artist’s thematic and stylistic obsessions and gives a highly personalised insight into his work of four decades.

Image: William N. Copley, ‘Untitled’, 1991, marker and white out on paper, 59.6 x 45.7 cm.; 23 1/2 x 18 in. 67.5 x 53.7 x 3.5 cm.; 26 5/8 x 21 1/8 x 1 3/8 in. (framed).

OPENING TODAY: “Long live ghosts” opens today, 16 September, at our Bleibtreustraße 45 gallery and is Toby Ziegler’s seventh solo exhibition with Galerie Max Hetzler. Please join us for the opening from 6-8pm.

The works in the exhibition are the result of a preparatory process of computer imaging, followed by gestural mark making. For this body of paintings, Ziegler has combined two visual languages which become indistinguishable in their polyphony; a computerised landscape, layered with gestural, painted strokes.

OPENING TODAY: Werner Büttner opens today, 16 September, at our Goethestraße 2/3 gallery. Please join us for the opening from 6-8pm.

The exhibition presents works by Büttner from the 1980s which reflect traditional genres and themes of art such as landscapes, still lifes or self-portraits. In keeping with the artist’s deliberate negation, Büttner’s works are captivating in their calculated shabbiness: the picture surfaces remain matte, the palette is predominantly limited to greys and earthy browns, and the recognisable pictorial motifs are executed in spontaneous and intrepid brushstrokes. Reviving and revitalising the painterly form anew, Büttner elevates in his works a thematic examination of the repressed and neglected spaces in everyday life.

Image: Werner Büttner, 'Selbst bei Ich könnt' im Bett verfaulen’, 1986, oil on canvas, in artist's frame. 245 x 195 x 5 cm.; 96 1/2 x 76 3/4 x 2 in.

OPENING TOMORROW: William N. Copley’s second solo exhibition with Galerie Max Hetzler opens tomorrow, 16 September, at our Bleibtreustraße 15/16 gallery. Join us for the opening from 6-8pm.

The exhibition shows examples of Copley’s works on paper. Humour, or more precisely Copley’s love of ridicule as a means of disruption, forms an important element in the artist’s work. He used it to take on big themes, using a very playful, understated expression. This might be most clearly seen in his works on paper, which rely on line, pattern and repetition.

OPENING TOMORROW: Toby Ziegler’s seventh solo exhibition, “Long live ghosts”, opens tomorrow, 16 September, at our Bleibtreustraße 45 gallery. Please join us for the opening from 6-8pm.

Across his practice, Ziegler has long been interested in the relation between an object, its image and the space in which it exists. The circulation of images – and in particular the reproduction of artworks, as well as the loss of information that can occur during their successive transmissions and transformations – is a subject that lies at the heart of his work.

OPENING TOMORROW: A solo exhibition of works by Werner Büttner opens tomorrow, 16 September, at our Goethestraße 2/3 gallery. Please join us for the opening from 6-8pm.

Beginning in the late 1970s, Büttner became known for his distinctive painterly approach and in his work, irony and satire abound. Originally conceived as the antithesis of conventional notions of 'high' art, Büttner’s paintings reject attributes of transcendence, elegance, refinement and taste to make subversive and humorous commentaries on society and the 'condition humaine'.

OPENING FRIDAY: Galerie Max Hetzler is pleased to present William N. Copley’s second exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler, opening 16 September in our Berlin Bleibtreustraße 15/16 gallery.

Celebrated for his unique contribution to post-war art, William N. Copley’s practice bridges the gap between European Surrealism and American Pop Art. Largely self taught, the artist used flat colours, stark outlines and heavily simplified forms to create works rich in symbolism, allure and allegory. Themes of love and eroticism abound, with his open depiction of desire and s*xuality in a repressed age, making the images psychologically and socially liberating.

This is the last week to see Rineke Dijkstra’s video work ‘Ruth Drawing Picasso’ at the in Duisburg which closes on Sunday 28 August.

Rineke Dijkstra has become famous for her haunting photographic portraits of young adolescents. Her images appear honest and undisguised. She searches for glimmers of individuality by concentrating on poses, expressions and subtle gestures. This video work presents an iconic motif of absorption and concentration in the series ‘Sculpture 21’.

Navid Nuur’s artwork ‘One Line Poem’, (2022) is included as part of the Kunstenfestival Aardenburg. Nuur addresses liminal states and in-between spaces in his artworks. In this installation, he approaches the concepts of borders and boundaries from a different angle. Here, a postcard is inscribed with a philosophical sentence akin to a piece of one-line poetry.

Nuur’s concept also engages with visitors who do not physically attend the Kunstenfestival Aardenburg. Visitors to the Kunstenfestival Aardenburg website can submit their address electronically and will recieve the artwork by post, an element to the installation which expresses how memories or experiences can be invoked through the trace of a physical object.

William N. Copley is celebrated today for his unique contribution to post-war painting, providing a singular connection between European Surrealism and American Pop Art. With subjects ranging from everyday objects such as umbrellas, flags and cars, to universal morality tales, exploring themes of love, adultery and death, Copley gave form to his fantasies and fetishes through strong black outlines and a self-taught, figurative style. Pictured here is Copley’s major retrospective in 2016.

William N. Copley’s solo exhibition opens in our Berlin Bleibtreustraße 15/16 gallery on September 16th.
