Led by conductor Teodor Currentzis and joined by soloist Daniel Lozakovich, Utopia will perform Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

The tour schedule is available in the gallery and on Utopia’s website https://utopia-orchestra.org/concerts/.

The preparation for a tour begins long before the first concert — for an assistant conductor, sometimes up to a year in advance. On the current tour, Giuseppe Mengoli, Utopia’s Second Conductor, works alongside Teodor Currentzis as his assistant.

Giuseppe’s working score looks like a map: full of colour, handwritten notes, folded corners, stickers and markings. 'Simply playing what is written is not enough,' he says, explaining why a conductor’s score needs so many markings.

'Composers like Gustav Mahler, who were conductors themselves, often composed for what they wanted to correct in the musicians. They predicted the issues of the instruments, or the habits of the musicians, and wrote extra notations or different dynamics to make it sound as they imagined. So you need to know where he is trying to compensate, and where he is writing something almost impossible, dreaming of it. As a conductor, you have to interpret the many layers of the composer’s will.'

Swipe the gallery to see Giuseppe’s system of markings and a few insights from his working score for Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.

One single musical idea — the perfect fourth — unfolds across Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 like a prism catching different light at every turn. From radiant purity to heroic pathos, it shifts its meaning depending on context, rhythm, and orchestral colour, constantly changing its character while remaining itself at the core.
Follow the journey of a simple interval as it lives multiple lives throughout Mahler’s monumental symphonic debut — in the gallery.
