An amazing energiser for me as I fight the grey days with vibrant colours.

With this small series of poles I am focussing on high contrast, warmth and pattern.
Still in the middle of the process and some sanding may occur at one point.

Wait and see what comes out at the end but at the moment it’s great to be working again.

Let there be light,

the clocks have changed and now the days are shorter and colder.
As a remedy for the winter blues I chose yellow because in all forms it brings light energy and optimism.
These little pocket sunbeams are being made for a charity event in my village.

I am hoping to bring warmth, optimism and a little cash to those in need.

Colour, I like to think of it as an achromatic grey.

Just showing my face and hair as its always nice to know who is feeding the feed.

Have a wonderful weekend to all the blondes brunettes redheads and grey foxettes.

Thrilled that the painting, they searched for a sky full of clouds has made it into the selection for the Kunstpreis in Marktheidenfeld.

It’s on of seven paintings looking at the impact water or lack or water has on migration.

Self analysis is it the shortening days or the autumn colours is it the world events whatever it is I am very much drawn to bright colours at the moment.
They greet me when I enter the studio and give me a little buzz and lift.
Do preferences for colour palettes change with the seasons?

Cut and colour: an evening with Henri Matisse.

I have developed and done this course over a few years and it’s wonderful to see the joy people get out of mixing colours.
First we look at basic colour theory and then Matisses superb use of colour.
In the end the students create a collage and who doesn’t love a collage they always look fantastic.

Hung this painting upstairs and away from my studio to see how it works and if it’s finished.
What a wonderful surprise to see it glowing in the morning sun.
Location counts.
And I believe it’s done.

This 40 x 40 cm painting captures the feeling of rising heat, which is what we have experienced since we arrived in France.
But that’s what you’d expect , sun heat, yellow landscape but the heat is so penetrating not only here in Germany as well. In the last 4 weeks we have had high 30’s and no rain.
It is a little disconcerting.

After an exhibition comes rest and relaxation. A little down time so to say.
Enjoying the light, art and impressions of the south of France. But it’s hot 🔥 reminds me of my childhood in Adelaide. Dry heat and hit nights.
Can’t complain because part of me loves it.

Studio walls this week.

Whilst working on larger works I use small canvases to help clarify the palette and the design issues.
Can’t really explain how it helps but it does, maybe it keeps me loose.
Taking a photo and reviewing it in black and white is also a great help in checking the tonal values allowing me to have a more considered approach when a painting isn’t resolving itself.

“cracks are overflowing”

Painting 6 from the series:
strömungen:
where the current takes me

When the cracks overflow you have reached a point where you are absolutely full, a certain tension has been reached and a release is sought.

Water has,in its fluidity, the ability fill gaps and adapt to the forms it fills. Regardless of the bends and depths that are present.

With climate migration ,I believe there must be a certain point and decisions must be made.

Do I stay or do I go?

These challenges face climate migrants all over the world as they reach a point where the cracks are so large and the ability to repair or fill them leaves no other choice than to leave.
In a new country they must adapt to possibly new languages and cultures as to must the host countries.

„A slow motion tidal wave“

Painting 4 from the series

strömungen:
where the current takes me

Sea levels are rising 3.4 mm per year according to satellite sea level observations from NASA.
So, this ‚slow motion tidal wave’ will at one point engulf coastal settlements and cities on each and every continent.

The soothing sounds of the ocean will get louder.

“Strangers with memories”

Painting 4 from the series.
strömungen:
where the current takes me

Building close to water is a human need but it also comes with risks as seen in the lines etched into old city walls warning of previous floods or the stone markers placed on Japanese coastlines cautioning of past tsunamis.

Destructive flooding is occurring with alarming frequency, having recently caused forced internal migration in Australia and Germany, two countries I hold dear.

„Somewhere in between“

Painting 2 from the series.
strömungen: where the current takes me

Depicting the place somewhere between ice and water.
With rising temperatures melted snow refuses to harden and this causes existential problems for cultures that rely on pack ice for hunting and living.
If the ice disappears their cultures will be diluted to a degree as they leave the lands where they live and assimilate to new surrounds.

„they searched for a sky
full of clouds“

Painting 1 from the series.
strömungen:
where the current takes me

Depicting the dryness of no rain, when the dusty landscape can bare no crops and you realise you have no control over the rain.
People are five times more likely to permanently move due to drought than flooding.
The decision is to stay or go.

Looking out the planes window over central NSW, Australia, the dryness the irrigation and the towns that cling to the river banks.

Signatures can sometimes be a useful design element but when I don’t want them to interfere I sign on the back.

This is a series of seven paintings which flow into one another so signing each one would have been , in my opinion, overkill.

Trying to get a portrait shot for the flyer, look intelligent, friendly be you etc etc mmmh not so easy as we all so self critical.
Why is that?

Does anyone know what kind of glass this is?

In the new old town of Frankfurt I found this doorway and was mesmerized, I couldn’t see how it was done ands if it was dependent on the sunlight.

Regardless of how it was very pretty.

Using a fine steel wool to buff and remove some of the glossiness before a cold wax finish.
This type of finish is a bit of a labour of love but the end result has such a beautiful depth.

Scaling up
Using the small works as a reference and guide. Not so easy as how things relate to each other on a larger scale or in reverse a smaller scale changes dramatically.

Do you use smaller works to scale up or do you just go for it?

Kreativ im Lockdown😊: Heute mal auf Englisch, passend zum Internationalen Tag der englischen Sprache von unserer Kursleiterin Suzanne Lawerentz (Suzanne Lawerentz Art).
How times change.
As a young woman I backpacked around the world, and met young people from all walks of life some of which I still call friends 30 years later.
I also remember handwriting letters to these friends so carefully that as many words as possible would fit in the aerogramme and still be legible for the reader.
Nowadays we have the ease, speed and endless possibilities of the internet but one thing has remained constant, the use of English. Through English I have been able to maintain contact with my Finnish, Dutch, Australian and Spanish friends.
And there is nothing like a lockdown to make you think........what’s so and so up to?
During the lockdown I had the pleasure of reconnecting with some people, one of which I have known since I was 4 years old. She’s living in a country town in Australia and I‘m living in a small village in Germany. How different our worlds are.
The Internet isn’t all sunshine but it is a wonderful vessel for keeping in touch, especially in these difficult times.

Habt ihr auch Freunde, Bekannte und Verwandte mit denen ihr auf Englisch kommuniziert?😊
x
