Planck, Max (1858-1947) - Autograph letter signed to Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach

German theoretical physicist who originated quantum theory, which won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918. Autograph letter signed “M. Planck”. 2 pages, recto and verso, postcard, 5.75 x 8.25 inch, on his Prof. Dr. M. Planck, Berlin-Grunewald stationery, 1938 October 25. To Mr. v. Bohlen. In German, in full: “Hochverehrter Herr v. Bohlen! Es ist überaus liebenswürdig von Ihnen und Ihrer werten Frau Gemahlin, daß Sie wiederum die Freundlichkeit haben, mir und meiner Frau Ihre Gastfreiheit darzubieten. Wir würden an sich auch herzlich gerne davon Gebrauch machen, schon in der Erinnerung an manche in Ihrem Hause erlebte anregende Stunde, aber dismal sind wir leider nicht dazu in der Lage, weil wir schon vor einiger Zeit eine Einladung aus Recklinghausen angenommen haben, von wo wir am 28. d.M. Abends zu meinem Vortrag nach Essen fahren werden, um anderen Tages früh wieder nach Berlin zurückzukehren. So bitten wir Sie, mit unserem verbindlichen Dank für Ihre gütige Absicht vorlieb zu nehmen. Mit besten Grüßen an Sie beide, auch von meiner Frau, Ihr stets ergebener”. Translated: “Dear Mr. von Bohlen, it is most kind of you and your esteemed wife to once again extend your hospitality to my wife and me. We would, in fact, be delighted to accept it, especially with fond memories of many stimulating hours spent in your home, but unfortunately, we are unable to do so this time, as we accepted an invitation from Recklinghausen some time ago. From there, we will be traveling to Essen on the evening of the 28th of this month for my lecture, returning to Berlin early the following morning. Therefore, we kindly ask you to accept our sincere thanks for your gracious intention. With best regards to you both, also from my wife, yours ever sincerely”. With torn file holes to the left edge, else fine condition. Very likely to Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach (1870-1950) - German diplomat and industrialist. Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach was chairman of the board of trustees of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Promotion of Sciences from 1931 to 1945, while Max Planck was its president from 1930 to 1937.
