Prague Biennale Festival of Performance and Multimedia Art in Public Space

The Prague Biennale was founded in 2003 by Helena Kontova and Giancarlo Politi and is organized by Nadace Prague Biennale Foundation (established in 2004). Among primary missions of Prague Biennale Foundation is to build a platform for support dialogue between artists, curators and gallerists from different countries, interconnect experimental initiatives and cultural institutions, enhance interg

enerational exchange between young emerging talents and already established artists. Prague Biennale exhibitions held 2003 - 2013 presented the overview of current artistic tendencies in both central Europe and worldwide. It served as a stepping stone in the career of emerging artists in the region and presented them on a global scale for example Daniel Pitín, Eva Kot'atková, Jiří David, Jan Šerých, Zbyněk Baladrán, Kateřina Šedá, Jiří Kovanda, Krištof Kintera, Dominik Lang, Milan Mikuláštík, Pavla Sceranková, Jan Mančuška, Jiří Thýn, Helena Hladilová, Victor Man. After the pioneering first edition, organized with the National Gallery in 2003, and following with three successful editions in the grandiose industrial space of Karlin Hall, over through the futuristic Microna skyscraper, it finally revitalised the vibrant district of Žižkov – the only freight railway station in the Czech Republic, which was finally pronounced as a national monument in March 2013. Since its' 4th inauguration Prague Biennale Projekt is held in the form of a festival of performance and video art in public space subtitled Re-connect Art. After reflecting on the period of isolation and the possibilities of artistic expression in the context of a pandemic, the recent second edition of the Re-connect Art festival will examine the identity of homo digital and the specifics of self-presentation in the virtual domain. The project aims to challenge the city's public space through live artistic interventions and to stimulate an open debate on current issues through confrontation with world art.

Dear friends and Art lovers!
We have an important announcement to make. We would like to express our gratitude to the Prague Biennale Foundation for the support it has provided for the Re-connect Art project since its lounge in 2021. 🙏

Since late 2025 however, the Re-connect Art project can no longer be associated with the Prague Biennale Foundation. We have therefore created a new profile for our friends and followers, for those who want to stay in touch with the Re-connect Art project which remains under the lead of its initiator and manager Elis Unique. 🪷

Please follow us on our website www.re-connect.art or the new Facebook profile. As to this page it will remain under the Prague Biennale Foundation under its director and founder Helena Kontová. 👏

Our Story

Nadace Prague Biennale zahájila v roce 2018 projekt Magic Carpets přímo v srdci Evropy. Kromě rezidenčních pobytů umělců a pilotní skupinové výstavy, zajistí ze zahraničí výtvarně-kritickou reflexi aktivit napříč celou partnerskou sítí. K tomuto tématu bude vydáno speciální číslo magazínu Flash Art CS Magic Carpets v anglickém jazyce.

Projekt Magic Carpets je evropská kreativní platforma EACEA 2017-2021, kterou tvoří celkem 13 institucí z celé Evropy. V průběhu projektu budou partnerské organizace v rámci Evropy vysílat a zvát k rezidenčním pobytům mladé umělce a poskytovat jim stimulující prostředí k tvůrčí práci a příležitosti k veřejné prezentaci jejich děl.

Prague Biennale, the biggest international art exhibition in Prague, Czech Republic, with patronage of Minister of Culture and the City of Prague is held every two years. The biennale was founded in 2003 by Helena Kontova and Giancarlo Politi and is organized by Nadace Prague Biennale Foundation (established in 2004). The Prague Biennale Foundation also publishes Flash Art CZ & SK, the Czech and Slovak edition of Flash Art magazine and also organizes Prague Biennale Photo. Prague Biennale celebrates its 10th anniversary with its 6th edition, which presents again the overview of current artistic tendencies in both central Europe and worldwide. After the pioneering first edition, organized with the National Gallery in 2003, and following with three successful editions in the grandiose industrial space of Karlin Hall, the last edition took place in the futuristic Microna skyscraper. The inauguration of the 6th Prague Biennale is scheduled for Thursday, June 6, 2013, just after the opening week of the Venice Biennale. This year it is based at the functionalist railway station from 1936, designed by Karel Caivas and Vladimír Weiss, in the vibrant district of Žižkov – the only freight railway station in the Czech Republic, which was recently pronounced as a national monument in March 2013.
