OBJECT:PARADISE

OBJECT:PARADISE Prague-based performance & poetics collective promoting language in context

OBJECT:PARADISE was founded in 2018 at Ouky Douky Cafe in Prague, Czech Republic by Tyko Say and Jeff Milton. The original concept was simple and remains our core principal today: let’s make poetry readings and happenings more interactive and dynamic. We don’t believe in a poetic language nor the best words in the best order, but rather believe that readings can be a celebration of language that e

veryone can come to. We want to deconstruct the classism and prejudice inherent in “good” language versus “bad” language use and, instead, celebrate the moment that language exists in.

In January this year, we gathered to commemorate and celebrate the late Prague writer and novelist Phillip O'Neil.

‘Imagine somewhere a great and splendid hall where everything is done to produce joy and merriment – but the entrance to this hall is a nasty, muddy, horrible stairway, and it is impossible to pass without getting disgustingly soiled and admission is paid by prostituting oneself, and when day dawns the merriment is over and all ends with one’s being kicked out again. But the whole night through everything is done to keep up and inflame the merriment and pleasure.’

As Phillip wrote himself, writing “doesn’t make the darkness go away, but it makes it easier to live with” — a sentence that continues to describe not only his practice, but the enduring gift of his work to those who read it.

The video below documents the evening. Thank you to everyone who came to share a memory, a piece of his writing, or a piece of writing to commemorate him.
Rest in peace, Phillip..

In September we met up with Natalia Rożycka at their exhibition H2HOMO in Palmovka at the art space. See the whole interview at the link on our bio 😍

Natalia Różycka (1998, Łódź Poland) is a Polish artist whose current work deals with the history of naturist sites in Poland and Prague and how their nature has changed to the present day. A residency at the gallery space SVĚTOVA 1 helped Natalia to explore the environment of these spaces in Prague more closely and confront them with her current research.

Natalia explores the boundaries between intimacy, lust, and social norms in her work. She captures these themes through a plexiglass painting technique inspired by the aesthetics of stained glass and the q***r history of her hometown of Łódź. She seeks to capture the fellowship of q***r micro-communities, fleeting moments of closeness, and small rituals that help her define her own space as a q***r woman.

We're happy to announce that February has introduced some lightness into the O:P Collective, and, while we had to postpone the release event of KROTCH Mag Issue 20, we're looking forward to organizing another party for the 21st issue.

That being said, we decided to finally release our latest KROTCH emission back into the streets where it originated from. (Pick-up locations listed below 👇)

We are so proud to have featured over 300 pages of Žižkov Delinquency since starting the project in June 2022. Thank you, endlessly, to everyone who has contributed to the project over the years 💋

With the release of K20, we're also excited to share with you that, despite inflation, we have decided NOT to raise the price of KROTCH (which is and will remain 50kč per issue), and rather to include MORE within each issue—24 pages as opposed to 16 pages. With this new format, we'll also be moving away from a 'monthly' release and towards a 'quarterly' release of the magazine. Now with KROTCH, you get more for less.

Since we began the project in June 2022, our goal has been to promote local writing on local topics to generate new perspectives on larger themes & questions -- what is poetry? what is art? and how can we get drunk for free? (these are all the same questions).

And since beginning the project, we’ve also learned a lot. For example, asking people to submit us "bad" writing is, in principle, the same as asking someone to send us "good" writing -- each qualification is subjective and dependent on past experiences that build expectations.

We also learned that the community writers for KMAG often don't need explanations because they understand, somehow, what these unspoken conventions are--even when we don't know ourselves. And, perhaps, this is the beauty about community works; you create your own notions of "good" and "bad" by collective shared experiences. However micro, however local.

Perhaps this is all we will have left in the age of global mass media where conventions and expectations are mass-maintained through algorithmic gatekeeping and the institutionalization of “expression.”

We want to give a huge thank you to all who have contributed to KROTCH over the last twenty issues and to all of you who took the time to support K-MAG. You have helped us belong and find our belonging amongst the contorted culture of the 21st century.

Long live the sh*theads.

"I first came across the name OBJECT:PARADISE online through short videos where a man recites a poem while, next to him, a woman ecstatically smashes a chair or a computer. The verses are in English, but the scenes are happening in the centre of Prague in front of random passers-by. In another video the poet even has the book he’s reading from burning in his hands. And everything is filmed in nostalgically old-school VHS. I immediately slipped into the curiosity of an amateur detective – what kind of parallel literary life is going on in the streets of the metropolis?"
