16 Horsepower are coming to Belgrade! Reunited in 2026 after more than twenty years apart, David Eugene Edwards, Jean-Yves Tola and Pascal Humbert return to a body of music that opened a fault line beneath American roots music. Out of 1990s Denver, they brought the banjo, concertina and upright bass into the fevered territory of post-punk, giving old mountain songs the pressure and menace of a gathering storm. “Gothic Americana” became the shorthand; their music helped make it a language of its own.

At its centre is Edwards’s voice, trembling between testimony and accusation. The grandson of a travelling Nazarene preacher, he grew up accompanying his grandfather and listening to hymns whose sombre weight would settle deep inside his songwriting. With Tola and Humbert, that inheritance became something wild and physically insistent: the rhythm tightening beneath him, the concertina drawing breath like a second, less merciful lung. Their repertoire reveals the breadth of that world. On Hoarse, songs by Joy Division and The Gun Club enter the same charged space; on Folklore, American and Eastern European traditions become equally intimate and uncanny. A century-old lament and a post-punk song seem to recognise the same wound.
That meeting of ancestral music and underground intensity is central to their lasting importance. They made folk instrumentation carry the alienation, dread and spiritual hunger of modern alternative music. Edwards would extend that work through Wovenhand, eventually releasing on Converge co-founder Jacob Bannon’s Deathwish label—a tangible connection between this musical world and the hardcore and metal underground. Now the reunion brings the original trio back into the room together. For Belgrade, a chance to hear the grain and friction of songs in which faith is lived at the edge of doubt, and the past keeps its teeth.
