Anime, game and esports shine at ICIF

The 22nd China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair (ICIF) has kicked off in Shenzhen, featuring a dedicated anime, game and esports zone for the 1st time. The fair brings together leading animation IPs, popular game titles, original digital content, professional esports equipment and trendy cultural merchandise from China and abroad.

Future industries take center stage at China-Russia Expo

The 10th China-Russia Expo opened in Harbin on the 17th, attracting over 1,500 enterprises from 46 countries and regions. In the digital economy exhibition area, smelting industrial robots can replace manual labor to finish key smelting procedures in high-temperature and high-risk environments. Robots for laparoscopic surgery and vascular interventional surgery boost the smart medical care with high precision and safety. The expo displays more than 800 new projects, cooperation initiatives and advanced technologies.

【China's 2026 box office tops 14.4 billion yuan】
China's total box office revenue for 2026, including pre-sales, has surpassed 14.4 billion yuan (about $2.11 billion) as of Sunday, according to data from online film platform Maoyan.
This May has seen a string of successful releases, with the film, Dear You, standing out for its exceptional reception, already earning over 452 million yuan (about $66.4 million).
Over 40 domestic and international films are either currently screening or set to premiere soon. Other notable releases this month include the thriller Vanishing Point, the comedy Being Towards Death and international films like Goodbye Julia and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.

COMICUP 32 fuels a new wave of Chinese-style original creative boom

The 32nd COMICUP Convention (CP32) successfully concluded on May 5 at the Hangzhou Grand Convention and Exhibition Center. Centered on Chinese-style original creations and science fiction themes, this year's event collaborated with popular gaming IPs to create a diverse cultural and creative exchange platform.

The exhibition reached an unprecedented scale, covering a total area of 300,000 square meters with more than 10,000 booths and over 390 themed sections, fully encompassing key sectors of ACG culture such as animation, gaming and online literature. Over the four-day event during the May Day holiday, total attendance exceeded 300,000 visits, with more than 90% of attendees coming from outside Hangzhou. It is estimated that the convention directly generated over 1 billion yuan (approximately $147 million) in combined cultural, commercial and tourism-related consumption, highlighting the strong economic impact of convention-driven industries.

COMICUP 32：展會經濟點燃國風國創創作熱潮

China’s scenic spots during the May Day holiday? Let’s just say it’s 「people, people, and more people — oh, and you.」 The Great Wall, the Bund, West Lake — queues snaking around every corner. Still, services largely functioned as designed. Real-time heatmaps on mobile phones allowed visitors to avoid congested areas. Extra high-speed trains were added, including overnight services. Volunteers were stationed at busy intersections and ticket gates to help direct foot traffic. And a little secret: a Chinese tourist spot at 6 am and the same spot at 10 am are two completely different worlds.
