REPORT ON COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP INITIATIVE LED BY “VICTORIA PEOPLE” IN LIMBE
On Saturday, 12th July 2025, a group of concerned residents from Limbe, alongside fellow citizens from Buea, converged in the New Town area of Limbe to support a sanitation initiative aimed at assisting the Limbe City Council and the waste management company, HYSACAM, in the removal of roadside waste.
Operating under the name Victoria People, the group launched a campaign titled “I Am Limbe”, with the core objective of encouraging all indigenes and residents to actively participate in restoring Limbe’s reputation as the cleanest town in Fako Division.
As part of the initiative, the group collaborated with HYSACAM to clear waste deposits particularly around the Limbe Main Market. In addition to the clean-up exercise, Victoria People took the opportunity to engage and sensitize the local population on the negative consequences of indiscriminate waste disposal. They emphasized that discarding waste directly on the ground complicates HYSACAM’s operations, as it increases the time and effort required to complete daily clean-up targets.
To provide a practical solution, the group distributed garbage bags to residents while educating them on the importance of properly bagging household and commercial waste. They further highlighted the public health risks associated with poor waste management, including vulnerability to diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever.
The initiative was warmly received by the local leadership. Mr. Otto Musaka, Quarter Head of the host community, expressed his appreciation to Victoria People for their selfless gesture. He applauded their efforts and encouraged them to extend their campaign to other communities across the Limbe Municipality.
HYSACAM, represented by its local coordinator, also commended the initiative, particularly the introduction and distribution of garbage bags, which they acknowledged would significantly ease their operational workload.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Coordinator, Honourable Eyum’a Sama, reaffirmed their commitment to the campaign. He pledged that Victoria People would continue to raise awareness through media platforms, community forums, and traditional gatherings across Limbe, with the goal of instilling a culture of environmental responsibility among all inhabitants.
