💡 A talented musician whose harp soothed Saul¹, a warrior covered with medals, a loyal friend. A man anointed to deliver his people from Goliath², and yet look what reproach his adversaries organized against his life, to show that they respect neither possessions, nor knowledge, nor skills³.

💡 David arrives on the battlefield. His brothers launch a smear campaign to prevent him from even being considered as a soldier⁴.

💡 David comes out of war, he is sent back into other wars, with the secret hope that he will die there⁵. Having become king, he will later let his army commander lead the wars, to the point of finding himself in a compromising situation with the wife of Uriah⁶. I won't tell you how widely his adultery was publicized. Lovers of a gospel mixed with impurity still delight in it today, forgetting that although God forgave David, He also severely chastised him⁷.

💡 David is anointed to be king. Like a constitutional successor of our time, he is the subject of arrest warrants, prosecutions, accusations of insurrection⁸. You can see that politics did not become dirty only today.

💡 Did he not find enemies among his own sons to defame and defy him⁹? Did he not find mockery rather than support from his wife, too high-class to understand his priorities, his faith, his patriotism¹⁰? Was he not stoned by weak men and insulted¹¹?

💡 Are all these things good for his honor and his reputation? Do they not constitute a criminal record, a service history that, without the fervor of the enemy, would have been filled with more glorious exploits ?

💡 Yet his destiny was fulfilled as God had said¹². We will credit these misadventures to persecutions and difficulties of the journey. We must however distinguish the reproach that the adversary fabricates to harm us¹³, and that which our own fault brings and which God allows to correct us¹⁴.

💡 Whatever the origin, do not forget: whatever your potential and your glory, you will sometimes be blackened, sometimes demolished by those who want to harm you. But persevere and leave to God's timing the fulfillment of His promises¹⁵. Perhaps your setbacks will be told, and they will embellish the account of your victories. Do not give up.

💦 Grief wears you out. Today we hear it in mental health and psychology as if it were a new revelation. The Bible, in many ways and repeatedly, has already taught us.

💦 Proverbs says: "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones" ². And again: "A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit" ³. A downcast soul is not just a spiritual matter, it digs into the body. David already said it: "My soul weeps with sorrow" ⁴ and "I am like a broken vessel" ⁵.

💦 The wisdom of this world would have gained much, and indeed it often does without admitting it, by simply listening to the Bible. Warfare tactics ⁶, breeding techniques ⁷, governance techniques ⁸ are already found there. But because Joseph's economic plan was not called a "five-year plan" ⁹, because Laban's death was not called a "stroke" ¹⁰, and because the Law of Moses was not called a "Penal Code" ¹¹, people think themselves smarter than the revealed Wisdom of God.

💦 It is therefore not only in our distress that we need His mercy, but also for our distraction, for the little attention we pay to the treasures He has already revealed to us in His Word to make the most of them.

💦 So, may God show you in His Word what will rejoice your heart, clarify your situations and correct your mistakes. May His joy be your remedy. For "the joy of the LORD is your strength" ¹².

BREAKING FREE

❝ *And You will not deliver me into the hands of the enemy, You will set my feet in a broad place.* ❞ ¹

⛓️‍💥 Someone told us that the theme of enemies is recurrent in our writings. They were concerned that the meditation on the Word might stray from the essential — building faith and preparing for eternity, guiding on the paths of righteousness — to be perceived only as a guide for daily battles, fixated on adversaries. Yet, the adversity of faith goes far beyond physical persons.

⛓️‍💥 We are not going to tell you, as is often heard, that we wrestle against evil spirits and not against flesh and blood ², to imply that we should never ask God to act against voluntary bearers of demons. Some have turned themselves into living satanic altars and agents of the enemy. Unless we are working specifically on deliverance, we do not all have the energy to labor to bring them to purity.

⛓️‍💥 And when they are the stronghold that annihilates the opportunity of salvation for others, we will let them go without remorse to gain many. Feel free to regret the engulfing of Pharaoh in the sea ³, the departure of Herod from the earth ⁴, the death of King Uzziah, the decay of Abigail's husband, the hanging of Haman on the gallows prepared for Mordecai ⁵.

⛓️‍💥 To set feet in a broad place, God must very often tighten the noose elsewhere. He puts the wicked in a cage, in a rage, in a state of toss. He swallows them up. Sometimes, as in Gadara, He delivers one whom all had sacrificed ⁶. Other times, as in the flood, He erases to start over. He gives nations as a ransom for His children ⁷.

⛓️‍💥 As you read us, please remember that we have a consistent bible reading schedule and that in this declaration, there is nothing personal. David never prayed lightly. He could not be hypocritical before God. When he was afraid of dying, he said so. God loved this frankness.

⛓️‍💥 So who is this unique and iniquitous enemy we want to escape from? Little does it matter to us whether it is the devil himself or an individual who has voluntarily lent him his hands. What is personal, we hand over to God. What is a stronghold against the salvation of many, we ask God to judge it ⁸. Lord, may we escape him. Set our feet in a broad place.

💛 Everyone knows what makes them happy. To truly help someone flourish, you have to understand their world. Otherwise you risk thinking you are pleasing them when you are not at all. It's like serving a meal with forbidden ingredients to which the guest is allergic.

💛 So who is better placed than the One who searches hearts and minds to unlock the mystery of our joy? Who better than God can provide for your joy?

💛 Those dark thoughts, that misery unknown to others, are not hidden from Him. Those unexpressed sighs, those anguishes of the soul, those wounds of conscience. Those overwhelming memories, those secret aspirations, those intimate shames, nothing hides from Him.

💛 That is why He knows better than anyone how to give you a happiness that no trigger will evaporate. He knows you. He made you. Don't always see the omniscient God as the God who sees your sin. He is also the God who knows you thoroughly, enough to know how to save you and shelter you. Enough to make provision to make you exult with joy.

💛 Yes, we can come before Him like a demanding child, not because we have deserved it, but because He has chosen to delight in satisfying us ¹. Why not trust Him and surrender to Him?

✨ If your brother in the faith clings to idols, what will you do? Will you hate him? Are you bound to carry the weight of his defiance against God? Is it time to apply the instruction to judge from within?

✨ Otherwise brother, look closely at what it means to cling. You don't cling to what you despise, you cling to what you cherish. You keep it close to your heart, you defend it, you make excuses for it.

✨ Otherwise brother, are you bound to carry his weight? Remember Ai. After the great victory of Jericho, Israel was defeated at Ai, a small town, because one man, Achan, had hidden the forbidden things under his tent. Those who fell that day had not taken the gold, but they had held the same rope as the one who took it, and defeat spread.

✨ Otherwise brother, will you hate him? David does not say I hate my brother, he says I hate those who cling. He hates the embrace, not the man. It's like Jonathan loving David his brother, but disaffiliating from the jealous throne of Saul his father. He loved his father to the end, but he did not carry his jealousy.

✨ That's when you must judge from within. Not judging the world that does not know, but judging the vanity that has sat down in the house. To judge is not to shout. It is to gently withdraw your hand from the rope. It is to no longer say Amen where Heaven no longer says Amen.

✨ And then David can say: "But I trust in the LORD." Because we don't disaffiliate to remain alone. We disaffiliate to better attach ourselves. We leave a vain embrace for a true embrace. Love isn't silly.

💔 We avoid the word "hate" in the name of love. Yet to love is always a choice. And every choice is a contrast: to love one thing is to set aside its opposite. For objects, it's easy. For people, it's more delicate. We have been made to believe that loving everyone, always, in the same way, is biblical.

💔 God Himself, who is love, said: "Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated" ¹. This is not an emotional outburst from God. In the language of covenant, the Hebrew verb _sane_ ² does not mean to detest with rage, it means: not to choose, to set aside from the covenant plan. A sovereign choice, not a capricious hatred.

💔 So at the start of this week, I am speaking to you who are making yourself sick because people don't love you. Listen: not all hatred can be explained. If before God you have searched your heart and find no proven offense against Him that you should repent of, then stop straining yourself to please corrupt men.

💔 There are, unfortunately, those who hate precisely those who cling to the truth, those who are loyal, just, honest, trusting in the LORD ³. Not because the latter have done wrong, but because their light is disturbing. It is hatred of the righteous because of his righteousness.

💔 Love and hate are neighbors. It all depends on _who_ we love and _why_. In my Bible, we do not love without discernment. To love the LORD is to hate evil ⁴. To hate the idol is to trust in God. It is a spiritual law.

💔 And you, do you still hate those who pay regard to worthless idols, so that you may better trust in the LORD? A useful question before trying to please everyone.

🔐 Every man secures what is dear to him. It is an unwritten law of the human heart. We place our money where the bank seems solid, our secret where the friend seems faithful, our future in a network, in a community, in a fe**sh priest, in a party. Each according to his faith or unbelief, his vulnerability, his trust placed or misplaced.

🔐 No one leaves what is dear to him in hands he judges doubtful, not even his own. And what is more precious than life? And what is dearer than a place in eternity? This is where David stops us. Caught in the net that was laid for him, he does not become a defeatist who surrenders to death. He secures his spirit.

🔐 In Hebrew _aphkid_ ¹, it is not the word for death suffered, it is the word for the treasure entrusted. He shelters what is essential to him, the mode of existence that surpasses the flesh. That without which we are but dust: his breath and his eternal place. Why does he dare? Because he says: "You have already redeemed me, God of truth". We only secure where we have already been proven.

🔐 Jesus, almost quoting David while walking through the corridor of death, will say: "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit" ². Same word, different depth. David surrendered his spirit in the face of danger to be kept from death. Jesus sows His in the midst of death to pass through it triumphantly and subdue it ³. He thus opens the way to the fulfillment of eternal hope and resurrection.

🔐 Without Him, Ps 31:5 just helps us sleep in peace. With Him, dying in peace allows us to live for eternity, because only one secured His life and His place and came back to take them again: the Son of God.

🔐 That is why Paul says that death is gain ⁴. Not because you are strong, but because what is dearest to you is no longer in feverish hands, but under the power of the Conqueror of death: Jesus Christ.

🔐 This weekend, where have you secured what is dear to you? A useful question before our unavoidable brings that valley that awaits us all one day ⁵. No RIP will help you there. The matter must be settled while alive, by a voluntary act.

📖 Enemies are very often subtle. I realized this morning that yesterday's text, in its formatting process, erased the reference of the main verse. This is the second time a biblical excerpt has slipped into our texts without being specified as such.

📖 Yet it is the Word itself that is the essence of our daily reading. We cannot sacrifice the root to give priority to the analysis. Yet, when using secular proofreading tools, prayer and the priesthood are not their priority. Imagine the difference it could make for someone who would read the text several years from now, out of context.

📖 It is through this kind of subtlety that the enemy so often infiltrates. A detail that seems to change nothing. _God told you to eat, so eat this one too, otherwise why would He have made it only to deprive you of it_ ¹. Well, it was not yet the time, it was not yet the circumstance. There is a time for the knowledge of good and evil: the time after maturity, the time after learning other training modules in Eden. And so, subtly, the tree of life will be withdrawn under the seemingly wise counsel of Satan ².

📖 The net asks Jesus to jump from the rooftop ³. The net asks David to kill Saul ⁴. The net asks the apostles to avoid getting imprisoned ⁵. The net asks Esther not to get involved in the problems of the common people, to remain first lady without associating with the stigmatized, far from the non grata of the government that places her at the top ⁶. What is your net?

📖 We often believe the enemy will come with chariots of war. He comes with suggestions of dissolution. He comes with counsels of perdition. He comes to feed our pride and question our trust in God. He comes to tell us we are unreasonable and invites us to act big. What greatness defies the instructions of the Lord? What self-affirmation pushes us to mistakes whose magnitude we will only see in the days of pain they will bring!

📖 God, our protector, do not let us be caught in the net of these poisons served on golden platters, of these promises to find happiness far from His principles. No matter the intelligence of those who lay them, let no trap seem alluring to us. No matter the beauty and subtlety of those who carry incitements to rebellion, keep us from straying from Your narrow path, Lord.
