At REGARTLESS, we remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting and preserving cultural heritage, especially in communities affected by conflict and displacement in Cameroon. We are currently carrying out emergency assessments in royal palaces and museums to document the condition of endangered cultural collections. The findings are alarming: years of insecurity and abandonment have left many sacred and historic objects at serious risk of irreversible loss.

Beyond documenting the crisis, we are working alongside traditional authorities and local communities to identify the most endangered objects, prioritize emergency conservation, and develop sustainable, community-led approaches to safeguarding this irreplaceable heritage.

Protecting cultural heritage is not a luxury reserved for times of peace—it is an essential part of humanitarian response, recovery, and lasting peace. Every object preserved is a story saved, a people remembered, and a future strengthened.

Cultural rights are human rights.
When people are prevented from practicing their traditions, protecting their heritage, speaking their language, or accessing their cultural spaces, more than monuments are lost—identity, dignity, and collective memory are under attack.
In Anglophone Cameroon, years of armed conflict have left countless cultural sites abandoned, damaged, or inaccessible, while communities have been displaced from the very places that sustain their cultural life. Protecting cultural heritage is not a luxury after conflict—it is a human rights obligation and an essential step toward peace, justice, and recovery.

We are raising the alarm 🚨 🚨 ‼️ on the worsening cultural heritage crisis in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon.

Nearly a decade of armed conflict has left royal palaces, sacred sites, museums, traditional artifacts, and community archives damaged, looted, abandoned, or at risk of irreversible loss.

This silent crisis has received little attention from the international community, despite heritage being central to identity, resilience, and peacebuilding. Protecting cultural heritage is not a luxury—it is an urgent humanitarian priority. If we fail to act now, we risk losing irreplaceable histories, traditions, and identities forever.

We are pleased to have met with our team of heritage practitioners who are supporting our initiatives to safeguard heritage at risk of the on-going armed conflict in Cameroon in our head quarters in Bamenda.

Cultural heritage must be inducted into humanitarian response to ensure that while we are saving and changing lives, culture is helping them thrive in life.
