Decolonization is also a struggle over who gets to tell the story. Narratives shape how we understand history, identity, and power. Art can disrupt inherited colonial narratives, center community voices, and create space for new ways of seeing, remembering, and imagining.

We use theatre as a tool for decolonization—bringing colonial histories, stolen heritage, and silenced voices to the stage. Through performance, we create spaces to question inherited narratives, confront difficult histories and imagine new futures rooted in community memory and lived experiences.

During our restitution work, access to information was often one of the biggest hurdles. Documents, histories and institutional records were not always easy to access—until some institutions began opening their doors and sharing what they held. Today, we appreciate those who chose transparency and collaboration. Access to information is not a privilege; it is essential to justice, accountability and restitution.

Heritage is more than what we inherit—it is what connects us. In times of conflict, protecting heritage can help communities preserve identity, rebuild trust and reclaim shared histories. From sacred sites and traditional knowledge to art, language and memory, heritage can become a pathway to dialogue and healing.

Protecting heritage is protecting the foundations of peace.

Ten cultural institutions assessed by REGARTLESS have no form of care for their heritage. Conflict has displaced caregivers, leaving collections vulnerable to further deterioration. Recovery requires urgent investment in conservation, community stewardship and protection before these irreplaceable cultural treasures are lost forever.

In case you missed it: Restitution decisions have already been made for 31 objects from Nso, yet their return remains delayed. Communities continue to wait. The Cameroon government must take action to facilitate these returns.

Heritage does not stop being at risk because communities are living through conflict. And protection cannot wait for conflict to end.

Over the past 18 months, REGARTLESS, working alongside the Nso community, has been putting this principle into practice—at the heart of an armed conflict, centering community knowledge, ownership and participation in the protection of living heritage.

The results speak to what is possible:
🔸 1,000+ objects assessed and prioritised according to risk
🔸 700+ priority artefacts treated and restored
🔸 31 cultural practitioners trained in basic emergency conservation skills
🔸 Conservation and storage facilities strengthened
🔸 Collections documented and inventoried
🔸 An Afrocentric, community-centred conservation approach developed

This work has shown us that communities can protect their heritage during crisis when they have the right knowledge, tools and resources.

But Nso is only one of many communities facing this reality.

We are calling on partners, funders, cultural institutions and conservation professionals to join us in taking this proven approach to other communities and palaces affected by conflict.

Heritage protection is possible in conflict. Together, we can make it sustainable.
