August 12's total solar eclipse gave the world plenty of spectacular photos. In the French Alps, it also gave one man the perfect backdrop for a proposal. 💍

At Val Thorens, a well-known ski resort in France's Tarentaise Valley, a man got down on one knee in front of his partner just as the sun disappeared behind the mountains, swallowed by the moon passing directly in front of it. Photographer Aurel Drew captured the entire moment on video, the dramatic mountain landscape and darkening sky forming a backdrop most couples could never plan for, let alone recreate.

The footage, shared publicly by the resort itself, spread quickly across social media, with viewers calling it a movie-worthy proposal. It became one of several standout moments captured during yesterday's eclipse, which plunged parts of Europe into midday darkness along a narrow path stretching across Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic, Spain, a small corner of Portugal, and northern Russia.

Proposals timed to solar eclipses aren't entirely new, but they carry a specific kind of weight precisely because of how rare the moment actually is. Total solar eclipses are visible from any single location only once every few hundred years on average, meaning couples who pull off a proposal during one are, quite literally, working with a backdrop that won't repeat itself again in either of their lifetimes, let alone their relationship.

Astronomer Catherine Pilachowski explained ahead of the event why this particular eclipse stood out even by those standards, noting that its path curved from northern Siberia southward as the Earth rotated beneath the moon, with totality passing within just a few hundred miles of the North Pole. For couples watching from viewing points across Spain, Portugal, and beyond, the sky didn't just dim. It went fully dark in the middle of the day, stars becoming visible for the brief window totality lasted before daylight rushed back in.

The Val Thorens proposal wasn't the only one making headlines from yesterday's event either. A couple in New York got engaged mid-flight along the eclipse's path, and a bride and groom were photographed embracing during a partial eclipse in Paris, each moment adding its own small, human story to a day that had millions of people worldwide looking up at the same time.

Cooper, official photographer at Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center, traveled to just outside the small town of Duraton, Spain, to shoot the August 12 total solar eclipse using a long exposure technique. Rather than capturing a single still moment, the method stacks the sun's position across the entire event into one continuous image, tracing its path as the moon gradually moved in front of it, reached full totality, and then slowly uncovered it again. Cooper shared the finished shot online with a simple, triumphant caption: "SUCCESS!"

Scientists use these brief windows for more than just photography. Studying the corona during total eclipses helps researchers understand one of the sun's more persistent mysteries: why its outer atmosphere runs millions of degrees hotter than its actual surface. Citizen scientists were also encouraged to contribute observations of their own during yesterday's event, tracking wildlife behavior, cloud cover, and temperature shifts as the shadow passed overhead.

For most people who witnessed it, the eclipse lasted only a couple of minutes before ending. Scientists are finding that Earth’s deep geological processes may have played a larger role in regulating ancient climate than previously recognized. A recent study suggests that tectonic settings where plates pull apart, including mid-ocean ridges and continental rifts, may have released substantial amounts of carbon dioxide over geological timescales. These processes could have influenced major transitions between warmer greenhouse conditions and colder icehouse periods.

Earth’s deep carbon cycle connects the planet’s interior with its atmosphere. As tectonic plates move, carbon-rich material can be carried deep into Earth through subduction, where some carbon remains stored underground for millions of years. Other geological processes return carbon to the surface and atmosphere. The balance between long-term carbon burial and geological release can therefore influence atmospheric CO₂ and climate over immense periods of time.

Understanding this ancient carbon cycle gives scientists a clearer picture of how Earth’s interior, oceans, atmosphere, and climate interact. However, these geological processes operate extremely slowly compared with modern emissions. Today’s rapid warming is overwhelmingly driven by human greenhouse-gas emissions, making the ancient tectonic carbon cycle important for understanding Earth’s past rather than explaining current climate change.

Called the Great North African Eclipse, it will darken parts of North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Middle East for 6 minutes 23 seconds-the longest on land this century. The Moon will fully block the Sun, revealing the solar corona to millions.

It will cross Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, with Luxor, Egypt offering one of the best viewing spots. A similar eclipse won't happen until 2114.

As a result, the length of Earth’s day has increased over geological time. NASA explains that tidal friction from the Moon is the primary long-term reason Earth’s rotation slows.

However, the popular claim that removing the Moon today would instantly give Earth a six-hour day is misleading. Earth’s current rotation reflects billions of years of interactions involving the Moon, the Sun, Earth’s interior, atmosphere, oceans, and other processes. Without the Moon, Earth would generally experience less lunar tidal braking, but its exact rotation rate would depend on the circumstances and history of the hypothetical scenario.

The six-hour figure is better understood as a reference to Earth’s distant past. NASA scientists describe the young Earth as rotating dramatically faster, with a day that may have lasted only a few hours before tidal interactions gradually slowed the planet. So the fascinating truth is not that losing the Moon would automatically create six-hour days today, but that our planet once rotated much faster than it does now.

You don't want to miss this!

The shower peaks overnight on 12 to 13 August, and the new moon means the sky stays properly black. Rare thing. Not repeated on this date until 2045.

The colours are chemistry. Sodium burns orange-yellow, iron yellow, magnesium blue-green, calcium violet, and the red is our own atmosphere lighting up, per the US National Park Service. The bright ones show it best.

Europe is about to witness something it hasn't seen in nearly three decades: the Sun blotted out in the middle of the day.

On August 12, 2026, the Moon's shadow carves a path from remote Arctic Russia across Greenland and Iceland before reaching northern Spain, just clipping a corner of Portugal. Get ready for one of the most spectacular annual meteor showers! The Perseid Meteor Shower reaches its peak during the night of August 12–13, 2026, giving skywatchers an excellent chance to see bright “shooting stars” streak across the night sky.

☄️ What are the Perseids?
The Perseids are produced when Earth passes through tiny dust and debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift–Tuttle. As these particles enter Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds, they heat up and glow, creating the beautiful streaks we call meteors.

🌟 When to watch?
📅 Peak: Night of August 12 → early morning August 13
🌌 Best time: Late night through the pre-dawn hours
👀 Equipment: No telescope required — your eyes are enough!
📍 Best location: A dark place away from city lights

Under excellent dark-sky conditions, observers may see dozens of meteors per hour, with some sources estimating roughly 50–100 or more per hour under ideal circumstances. Actual numbers will vary depending on your location, weather and sky conditions.

🌑 A bonus for 2026:
The peak occurs around a New Moon, meaning there is very little moonlight to wash out faint meteors. That makes 2026 a particularly favorable year for Perseid watching.

🔭 How to get the best view:

✨ Find the darkest location you can.
✨ Stay away from streetlights and buildings.
✨ Give your eyes around 20–30 minutes to adapt to darkness.
✨ Lie back or use a reclining chair so you can see a large portion of the sky.
✨ Look broadly across the sky rather than staring at one exact point.

📸 Photography tip:
