The orange and red colors spreading across the Pacific Ocean in climate maps represent far more than warm water.

They are the signature of El Niño, one of the most powerful climate phenomena on Earth.

El Niño occurs when surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean become unusually warm. While it begins in the Pacific, its effects can ripple across the entire planet, influencing weather patterns on nearly every continent.

Under normal conditions, trade winds push warm surface water westward toward Indonesia and Australia, allowing cooler water to rise near the coast of South America. During an El Niño event, those trade winds weaken or sometimes reverse.

As warm water shifts eastward across the Pacific, enormous amounts of heat are released into the atmosphere. This extra energy alters global atmospheric circulation, changing rainfall patterns, storm tracks, and temperatures around the world.
